In Texas in the 1930s, when blacks were denied the right to vote and were segregated and discriminated against in all areas of employment, justice, military service, and marriage, Mel Tolson wanted his fellow citizens to do something. He starts the first debate team at a black high school. Four students were carefully selected: Hamilton, Henry, Samantha, and James, and as they grew up on the team, Mel challenged the conventional wisdom of the day.
