"Tax can be complicated" - NO IT ISN'T! Especially compared with America - when I was commuting I used to wonder at Americans ploughing through a huge book filling in their tax returns. Here, it is almost entirely automated - I haven't had to fill in a tax return for years

The picture he gives isi incomplete: 1) Taxes are not high, but OECD average. 2) Also pension contributions are subsidised by the state, 3) Most people get much more back than what they pay into the system over a lifetime. 4) Efficient beureucracy, despite what some people say. 5) Allemannsretten is misunderstood, you can't camp just anywere you want as long as you are respectful..

Born and raised in Tønsberg, Vestfold county- just shy of 100 Km south of Oslo. Despite being the smallest county in Norway, there's less than an hour drive from alpine skiing inland to island hopping in the Oslo fjord (obvioulsy not within the same season, hehe). I was born in 1974, and I have always been grateful being born in this peaceful and beautiful part of the world. The unique Scandinavian social democratic system looks out for you from the cradle to the grave. You can ask mostly any Norwegian (exceptions do occur, ofc), and they will tell you that they pay their taxes happily, and so do I. Ther safety net here is just incredible, and I've always been grateful for all the freedoms that we enjoy here. It's kinda weird that this is the place where black metal was born, but it's also pretty awesome. Nice video, keep it up!

Unexpected service charges? Unlike tipping because that is just about mandatory elsewhere, others have mentioned about the London centric bias in such videos, please be more general (less lazy) and choose somewhere more representative of the UK and not the capital city where prices are certain to be much higher, would a video of New York be representative of the whole of the US? Of course it wouldn't (i used New York because it's comparable in size). A tip you missed would be a "rail card" for about £30 you can get a Railcard which will give you 1/3 off most rail fares for a year and can be used online and when buying rail tickets at stations.

We also have private health if you choose to pay for it. You are still covered by the NHS too. But you will never see people suffering the effects of untreated health problems that you often do on US TV shows. Another big surprise is that in retail shops the price you see is the price you pay, tax is not added on top. If you are buying building materials from an outlet that serves the trade, you might see the cost without tax, but this is made very clear and they often show the tax inclusive price too. For your average visitor, this isn't really an issue.

Meal Service Charges are mostly optional. One wouldn’t get chased out of a restaurant for not tipping - as they would in America. Staff get paid in UK so tops are a bonus for service NOT A SUPPOSED RIGHT.

The comment on tax bands is not accurate or clear. Everyone, no matter what your total income gets the benefit of the zero tax band, you are only charged on your marginal rate, that means you pay nothing on the first £12570, you pay 20% on the anything over that up to £50270 and 40% on anything over that up to £125140 anything over that is charged at 45%. So it is not as harsh as they make it sound. And as your employer is responsible for deducting tax at source, for most people it is not complex at all as they NEVER have to submit any tax returns. The NHS is not perfect but it is vastly better than facing bankruptcy because of illness or leaving it too late because you are afraid of the cost and dying.

3 hours from being diagnosed as having a potentially life-threatening condition to being on the operating table, including the journey time to the hospital in the free ambulance, examination and prep-time. A successful operation and weeks of care in a private en-suite NHS room (with a fridge!) then months of in-home care by trained nurses, all in-patient medication and dressings, treatments, consultations and food already paid for by National Insurance contributions. In some circumstances, they will even refund travel costs for hospital visits if there isn't a free bus service available. Americans can call me a "Marxist Communist" all they like while they're filing for bankruptcy!

10 pm on New Years Eve 2023 I went to the A&E dept of a local hospital with severe stomach pains. At 2 am New Years Day I had a CT scan. At 9 am New Years Day I had a major bowel operation, 2 surgeons, 4 anaesthetists and numerous nurses. I don't need an American to tell me about NHS delays - I wouldn't swap the NHS, for all its faults, for the obscene greed that passes for health care in the US

That used to be true but sadly it is true no longer. Many second or third stage cancers requring surgery are regarded as urgent but more and more patients face multiple reschedulings to the point where they are dying while waiting. There is a major difference between urgent and emergent cases, of course but even patients attending oversubscribed, underfunded understaffed and underequipped emergency departments are dying or suffering the life changing conditions that immediate care would prevent.

You DO NOT have to pay the service charge, even if it is mentioned on the menu, door signs etc. There is NO legal right to charge the service charge and no legal basis to pay it either. If i don't get good service (for me that' usually means a polite server, good atmosphere, clean venue) i don't tip. If i do, i'm happy to add 10% of the bill. Places that automatically add a service charge i will ALWAYS ask the server if the money goes to the staff or the company. If they say staff i'll pay (see above) if not i tell i won;t pay it and there is nothing they can do about it. I will, however, leave a tip for the server if they've been polite, prompt etc. Paying a tip should be a reflection on how good the service was, not some way of boosting the profit of the company. How can you trust a company like that?

Finally ... a video pointing out that we don't all eat black pudding and jellied eels ... the reality is, tourists probably eat them more than real Brits! ... a fairly accurate breakdown ... although rent and food costs are a bit higher than quoted and it didn't mention the fundamentally safe streets (almost no guns) , not as much racism as Brexit might suggest, excellent workers rights (good holidays, sick pay etc) and a general 'live and let live' approach to life.

I had a friend ( British) who worked for many years in the London offices of Merrill Lynch, the huge US firm . She got to know many employees from the States ,executive types who were expected to spend some time in all the major world cities in order to rise up the ladder . Very often they would say that their posting to the UK was the most difficult for themselves and the family , in adjusting to a new country . The reason was that moving to France ,Argentina ,Germany etc meant preparing for a new culture ,language etc ,but the UK would be just the same as `home`. Inevitably they came totally unprepared for the difference.

@@danmayberry1185 To be fair, field hockey originated in 19th century England (although versions go back to 2000 BCE in Persia). Presumably that predated ice hockey in Canada in 1875 for it to be called hockey at all. In countries that play both, field and ice hockey have to be differentiated somehow; it seems fair that the sport that came after the original is called what makes it substantially different, i.e. it's played on ice. I would call it a concession that hockey is now called field hockey - I wouldn't complain too loudly at calling it 'ice' hockey.
