Tales of the Abyss - 45 - Revenge at Chemin de Ronde ~
_Tales of the Abyss_ (Very Hard, 1/2 Exp, No Free Run)
Rematch with Arietta (CC Part 6, I guess)
Part 45
=--=-==
So.. Arietta quite effortlessly defeated Luke and the party in battle.
Bit embarrassing really. Arietta has exacted her revenge.
But I have an idea for a strategy - hence I'll give that a go.
And then after that.. well, we're looking for answers. I have to think about what my options are.
I come up with an idea of what I need to do next. But I won't spoil it here in the description.
So.. until I see you again in Part 46.. whenever that may be.
Until then ~

I feel like your splits for the bosses should be when you defeat the boss, not when you start the boss fight...
That's a good point. I've not given it much thought but I can see that's what others are doing. If I was doing splits properly, they should all be on 'loading' screens (or black screens between areas). In the end, I never really got it right.
28 Mins, Tubby dies... Isn't is Permadeath?
Looks like I didn't explain what I was doing very well in my text on the side. I wanted to fit 'Game ends with a Game Over' in one word for the title and the run name - and 'permadeath' was what came to mind.
You are hitting enemies pretty hard. What settings did you have for this one?
Pretty well what I managed to fit in on the side there. 3 conditions - for both enemy and party: Max hit percentage, zero evade percentage, and every hit a critical hit. Basically the attack power the enemy had in the 'anniversary challenge', I now have. I thought it would level out the difficulty.. but it doesn't really..
@@thelastsidewalk No, it looks pretty difficult.
Saved me, got to the boss of the castle but got bodied without the heat upgrades you showed
Oh thanks man. Yes, these upgrades are pretty easy to miss. That's a crazy fight in the castle.. I need to hurry up and get that uploaded. Thanks for stopping by.
Also, hope you really enjoy your Tales of the Abyss playthrough.
Infinity Nikki looks alright
Yeah.. I enjoyed what I played of it. I think it's got potential to be good fun. There was just a whole lot to try and pick up pretty quick. I'll probably try it again sometime but I just don't feel too compelled by it at the moment.
I think you need to look at your recording/braodcasting software, and get it to pick up the game sounds direct. Otherwise we can always hear your talking fine, but virtually no game sounds.
Thanks for the feedback. It is picking up game sounds direct. It's very hard to tell what it's coming through like on the stream without feedback like yours, so thanks for that.
Very hard still needs 10x exp else GOOD Luck killing the Liger queen boss at doing ONLY 1 DAMAGE PER HIT and Free run is still needed even THEN.
Gotcha. Looks like I don't know what I'm getting myself in for 😅 Thanks for stopping by.
You really need to get that next Tales of the Abyss video out. 3 week since the last one... Too long. I know it's a lot of work, but you'll lose momentum if you don't get it out soon. Also, for me, I'd prefer: more videos with less editing, rather than less videos with more editing. Maybe its that FOMO but I love seeing all the footage, I find it fairly jarring when the video skips from one spot to the next. I guess I'm also used to WoW Hardcore videos where you stream every second of gameplay to prove you didn't die at all.
Yes, Part 31 won't be far off. I spent about 3 hours editing it over the weekend. I was collecting on enemies for 4-5 weeks to get prepared for Fubras River, but didn't want to include all that footage.. Part 32 should be pretty close behind Part 31 too. Thanks for the feedback. You're my main viewer so I want to take that into account.
Are the Cut scenes taken straight from the movie?
Yes indeed. And I'm pretty sure some of the voice work is from the movie as well. Must have been helpful for them to be able to use movie resources like that.
@@thelastsidewalk I wonder if the movie and game were in production simultaneously for that purpose?
It could well have been - the game only came out a month or so after the movie. The game seems to follow the movie storyline.. with broad brushstrokes. It would have been great if they included more variety in the gameplay style to fit the movie narrative better, but for what it is, I think it's one of the best movie-to-game adaptations I've seen. I could see myself playing it again to try and get a better time someday. Narnia: The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe had an excellent companion game to the movie as well. That was out on Xbox/Gamecube/PS2. Plus, that was multiplayer which made for a lot of fun. Might revisit that someday..
I like the way they do the fog of war in this game better than RA too. I love that you can see the terrain before you've explored it
Did you ever play Dark Reign? Fun little RTS that one.
No.. no I haven't heard of it..! I should check it out. Which RTS do you think I should stream first, that or Warcraft III?
@@thelastsidewalk This looks far less intense than our OpenRA games last night now. That's a tough one... Both are pretty good. After watching a video about Dark Reign though, I'm not sure that is the game I thought it was.
Gotcha. I'm interested to give Warcraft III another go. Sounds like you've played the game before.. Maybe you might be able to give me some direction if I play it on stream? (or mislead me, whichever's funnier).
@@thelastsidewalk Nope, played it so little and so long ago I couldn't help...
@@thelastsidewalk The new Age of Mythology Retold is out. Maybe you should give that a go?
There's something about those hooks you appear to have missed. I'm not sure what though...
I think I did find their secret toward the end.. if we're thinking of the same thing. Thanks for commenting, motivates me to go back to it - gotta 100% it after all, right..?
@@thelastsidewalk Yeah, I noticed. The new girl that you found can use the hooks. You must be able to redo levels once you get more characters.
Yes, it has me thinking I should just wait until I find the rest of the girls before I go back and revisit the levels. Now that I've realised that the blue/green/purple/pink sparkles indicate which character you need might make for more engaging viewing. But it seems like the interest is there for me to stream this again, and I did enjoy playing it.. so thank you.
Oh, Corrine! I missed that at the start, so I had no idea what name the voice was saying!
I find the audio balance between voices and music to be off, as in, the music overpowers the voice work. Shame there's no audio adjustments available.
The Main Character is pretty immature. I really hope he grows up. His attitude is starting to wear on my.
.. wear on your..? * you are the master of suspense 🙂 * You're right though. He came from quite sheltered surrounds - his ignorance about the outside world, and even just how to treat people - is astonishing. The others are trying to help him but he's so clueless. Jade did well not to smack him up here 😅 Thanks for commenting, means a lot 🙂
@thelastsidewalk Lol, oops. "starting to wear on my patience"
have you played other tales games? if so how does this hold up? ive been wanting to dive into the series one of these days but havent done so yet
Hey man, Nice to see you again. I've mostly played the earlier Tales games (2008 and earlier). The series seemed to change a lot when it went 3D in 2011. I'm really liking Tales of the Abyss so far. Gameplay is fun, the voice acting is good, the story is compelling, the battle system is fun. Many seem to think that Tales of Vesperia (2008) was the pinnacle in the series. There was a 'Definitive Edition' released for modern platforms not all that long ago. I find the storyline a touch below previous games, but voice acting, gameplay, battles - the rest is all top notch. That might be one I'd recommend, but I've also heard the latest in the series - Tales of Arise - is very good too. It'd be one of those two if I was going to make a suggestion. Probably can't go wrong with any of them, really. Though Zestiria had some marring technical issues. Well, you probably weren't wanting a novel, But anyhow, thanks for stopping by..!
Congratulations! What an acheivement. I assume the only way to make the game harder would be to essentially make it impossible. Cause I don't think the game would be possible (with these cheats on) if you couldn't heal or revive characters. Not sure what else you could do? Maybe try and finish the game with no weapon upgrades, or no armour? Not sure...
Yeah, it was getting pretty tight here. No barrels left, didn't have much time at all. 'No armour' playthroughs are a heap of fun. And they're easy to do as well (edit: straightforward, that is).. just unequip your armour when a character joins the party.
Now that I think about it, this challenge might actually be harder multiplayer. The reason being - If Karen is player-controlled, there are times when she is being hit that she can't heal until she gets back up again. However, when she is CPU-controlled, you can issue commands while she is being hit. That means you can heal more frequently. Makes me wonder what this would be like multiplayer.
There's certainly other challenges I'd like to try. The one you mentioned - 'No Inns, No Stores, No Spells, Permadeath' would be amazing fun. Like so much fun. There's also this wild glitch with the Blue Drops (in the Northtown Sewers or the Ice Country) where you can actually have a character disappear. It's wild. It's hard to pull off, but the effect is permanent. You could do a 'Heroless playthrough' for example (for at least the second half of the game).
That blob boss looked pretty easy too
Oh yeah, the slime bosses (Lime Slime and Dread Slime) and the Axe Beak (Upper Land Forest) are probably the easiest bosses in the game. (well, aside from the first boss where you keep getting healed).
He's a Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins
Haha, I had to look that up. I've not watched Elf yet. Would you recommend?
@thelastsidewalk Yeah, it's one of our favourite christmas movies
Gotcha. I'll have to keep an ear out if you watch it again anytime soon. I have very fond memories of watching 'License to Kill' with you. That was wild fun.
Yes, that text was hard to read on top of the lighthouse
Ah, thanks for the confirmation. I very rarely change the window style from the default, but this playthrough I did. There were a few times where it was a bit offputting.
Unedited is great. I understand it's a lot of content if you are playing for hours when collecting to then commentate, and have something to talk about. But I always prefer long form where you actually get to see everything, not just the highlights. I think Highlights just remind me of Social Media... Everyone just posts the highlights of their lives, you don't see the mistakes they make and so it makes them look perfect
Thanks, I appreciate it. There's always a fine line between doing content I want to do - vs - content that I know will get more views. I still enjoy spending the time editing because (as egotistical as it might sound), I'm sure I'll enjoy coming back and watching some of this content in years to come - even if no-one else does. But I appreciate you watching through this whole series. And you've nailed the reason (well, one of the main reasons) social media is so dangerous as well. Also so meaningless.
How do you go listening to your own voice so much? I actually hate the sound of my own voice when I listen to it. I guess it just doesn't sound right to me...
That's a great question. I wouldn't say I like listening to my own voice.. maybe the more you do it the more you accept it? I think the idea of people I know watching my videos has made me a bit uneasy in the past. Being in the same room as someone who is watching one of my videos is weird as anything.
Is the camera independantly controlable? I always prefer a 3D camera that is locked to behind you, but you can scroll it around if you want to.
I understand - say Infinite Undiscovery as an example. The camera here in this game is fixed. Or it's 3D movement in a 2D scene. Or 2.5D, or however you'd like to describe it. The exception is the world map. Also, battles are also close to 3D if you've got 'Free Run' on. If it's not switched on, you can only move closer to and away from the targeted enemy in a line (1D? but I guess you can jump, so that would be 2D). The Tales series went to full 3D in 2011. I think the series really changed from that point.
Risk it!!! He's a mad man, a mad man!
Risk is always the right choice. Plus, classic Futurama quote. Love it.
I'm so glad you got the Futurama reference!
Got that one in 1 video, instead of a lot :D
Oh yeah, that Dragon Worm boss is in a class of his own. I think it's his speed and the way he runs into you makes him ridiculous.
So much of this game I don't remember from our playthrough...
Well, you know, there's one sure cure for that..
And by that I mean a really difficult Secret of Mana playthrough. Like no magic, no stores, no inns, permadeath, no sound, no TV, sitting on your head, no controller, blindfolded, no electricity, no fun, no house, covered in off mayonnaise. If you have fun or enjoy it you have to restart.
@thelastsidewalk I like the sound of permadeath
YOU DID IT!!!!! I mean, there are more video's so I assumed you would, but Wow! Insane. That must have felt amazing to beat that boss!
It was one of the great moments I've had playing this game. Very memorable. As I mention in the video, I didn't expect I was going to be able to win. I had actually typed up a bit of lore as an ending to the playthrough, And was planning on reading it out as an end to the challenge if I didn't succeed that day. You're a star for watching. Thank you.
Ugh, and Karon gets 1 shot at level 99
Ugh... Level 99 and Zuzy still gets 1 shot by the boss... That's insane. I don't know why, but I thought Karon and Zuzy also got 999 Health at level 99...
Zuzy immediately un-barreled?
Hmmm.. if I was controlling Zuzy at the time, I might have inadvertently pressed a button. I was doing a whole lot of experimenting at this point.
Also, both Zuzy and Karen getting 1 shot by the boss is killing you. If they could take more than 1 hit I think that would make this a little easier.
This looks like it would be easier with more people cause then it's not all on you to control 3 characters. It just appears to be too much to switch between characters and heal and attack the dragon worm...
Oh yeah, it'd definitely be handy to be playing 3-player here.
It appears its not worth healing after the Earth Slides. They only do ~10 damage, and you can take another hit after them, but it costs you time when you could attack cause the hero is getting healed.
That's a very good point. I think a lot of the time I'm healing expecting to be hit, but yes, all the healing makes it harder to hit.
You look like Zuzy needs more levels so that he can take more than 1 hit from the boss. You're fighting this battle with 1 hand behind your back if Zuzy is dead.
Good thought. Getting up to Level 99 couldn't hurt..
It looks like Tubby can't get a hit off cause he's in a constant chain of getting hit and getting healed. Unfortunately it doesn't look like you can fight this traditionally, with Tubby tanking all the damage and Zuzy being ignored by the boss and doing all the damage. This just looks so insane to try and do.
Outch! Rough way to finish that video...
Oh yeah, not wrong, all it takes is a moment.
So Moon Energy gives you 100% crit rate too?
Yes, it's either 100% or practically 100%. It's obscene.
Watching this one just screaming "Heal! Heal!" almost the whole time.
Quote of the game: "If you're going to die, die quick"
Haha, thanks man. 'Die so the screen can scroll faster'. I'm amazed that you're still watching these. It means a lot to me that you've watched all the videos that you have.
You look like you really need to go and level up before coming back to try and get past these metal crawlers.
Oh yeah, even another 5 levels here would help against the Metal Crawlers.
Those things hit so freaking hard!
Hey man no worries, sorry it took me this long to get back to you. Had a good friend pass away been kinda rough. I did really enjoy visions, while I wouldn't put it in the same league as the classics (som, trials, legends, etc) It was definitely an enjoyable experience with enough homage to the classics. A few things out of place like giving a character a southern accent for no reason lol. But overall, I would recommend it. How have you been? Hope all is well.
No need to apologise at all. Sorry to hear about your loss. It's a horrible thing. No words really help. Thanks for your thoughts on Visions. I appreciate it. I'll keep my expectations in check, but it sounds like I'll enjoy it. It'll certainly be on the list after I finish Tales of the Abyss. However, I'm thinking by that time I might play Secret of Mana again. We'll see. What's next on your gaming list? Thanks for coming back and commenting, very nice of you man.
This is freaking stressful watching!! I can't imagine how stressful it was to play!
Thanks man, I just rewatched the boss fight. My favourite part was the sudden shift at 16:55. The Hydra was nuts. Glad you're still enjoying the playthrough.
2:30 - Intro Stage 3:25 - Stage 1 (Forest) 21:02 - Stage 2 (Woods) 36:45 - Stage 3 (Boss Fight) 51:50 - Stage 4 (Underwater) 1:10:15 - Stage 5 (Lava Cave) 1:35:35 - Stage 6 (Race in the Skies)
I might reupload this with increased volume. Hey.. I said might. A meteorite might hit the planet tomorrow. Might.
Have you ever had that much money in SOM before? I Imagine your "No Stores" playthrough would have racked up a bit of cash cause you never spent it. Were you allowed to stay at Inn's in your "No Stores" playthrough?
Well, in the Mana Fortress there's been a number of times where I've hit max cash. But for this point of the game, I would say 2.2 mil would be the most I've had, as this playthrough had a lot more collecting than the 'no stores / no spells' playthrough. I did indeed allow stays at the Inn on that 'no stores / no spells' playthrough. I know, using Inns is basically cheating. No inns, no stores, no spells would be -amazing-. Particularly the early stages. Definitely one I'd like to do. Just maybe don't add 'permadeath' to it. No, wait. maybe. if you were insane _(i.e. you should definitely do this)._
Adam S: "People aren't here to listen to me sing". That's what you think...
Why do you block instead of retreating?
The main reason is I only get a limited amount of time between her attacks, And I want to be next to her when I get the chance to attack. There's a mechanic called 'staggering'. If you hit the enemy enough, they stagger and you interrupt their next attack, allowing you to keep attacking. However, getting a boss to stagger is pretty rare. But with a bit of patience you could run in and out of range between attacks, But you'd get in less hits. That would be more conservative. You do slow down a bit when you change direction, However there is a skill that lets you jump backwards while you're guarding, without changing direction. Perhaps I should play around with that.
@@thelastsidewalk It just seems to me that you are taking so much unnessasary damage... I think the jump back while guarding is a good tactic. I just wondered if you got a bonus for guarding, or something?
I don't think I'd be able to turn/run away from the boss and run far enough to not get hit - (and then get back to the boss for my attack window) Turtling would keep damage down, but it would make for a much longer battle. I'll do a bit more experimenting with the next boss though :) You do get bonus grade points for guarding. Main benefit is obviously the reduced damage, which is halved again with a successful 'forward guard'.
Because I have a save file back at this boss, I gave the fight another try and did a lot more backwards hops rather than defending. It was more successful than I thought..! It does depend on the attack, the ligers normal headbutt and claw attack I could jump back from and avoid damage, But it's lunge attack and lightning attack I could not (I ended up taking more damage than normal as I wasn't guarding). Makes me wonder if this boss (or others) have either patterns you could learn, or they otherwise telegraph their attacks if you know what you're looking for. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I learnt something.
Do the computer players use planes much? In skirmishes in the original game, they rarely if ever did... I actually built a map that was all sea and air warfare just to see, and the computer players took forever to build an air force or navy.
Yes indeed. OpenRA has excellent AI. They know how to use everything. Really challenging, and I don't want to oversell it - but it's a great experience. There are a few unit changes from Red Alert 1, but I think they're positive changes. In the Skirmish setup, you've also got options to tailor the AI somewhat - I think there is an option (Naval AI) that is best suited for sea and air warfare. That AI setting affects what units the AI focuses on building.
For me, I'd love if you read out all the dialog boxes. I just have this on another screen while I'm doing other stuff, so reading out the dialogs would help me keep up with the story
Thanks for that. So like.. all dialog boxes? Like even when I'm not progressing story (i.e. talking to NPC's and that sort of thing)?
@@thelastsidewalk Yep
