cheap rain gutter option for van side door, save money. campervan conversion Citroen relay 4 berth
Переглядів 3696 місяців тому
when you have the side door slightly open in the rain, the rain can run down to the seal and then drip into the van. adding a rain gutter can prevent this happening. the rain gutters can be quite expensive, so here is a way of adding a rain gutter at a much lower cost.

All went well until we put the windows in and got a bit of black adhesive on our gloves which soon ended up everywhere which isnta good look on a white van! We eventually got it all off the van and glass. Scary job to start cutting but is fine if you work carefully.
AHH I feel your pain. on my first van it went dark whilst doing the window. It looked perfect and then next day I saw all the finger print glue everywhere. Luckily it does come off easy enough with wipes. Hope your build is going well

I agree, although a bit pricey saves loads of space and yes hassle, and good for a sell on. Going to give it a go myself shortly, seeing if the price will come down due to winter coming. Great build there got some good ideas waiting on the rest of your vlogs coming
Have you thought about the project 2000 electric bed, would allow seating area as well
Hi. Yes I wanted to put an elevated bed in this one above the sofa area, but the wife didn't feel comfortable having a bed for the children above us. I'm going to be trying to get this idea in the next one. As it'll save a lot of hassle and room.
This is a great build. When we built our LH1 Ducato, it was just us two. Now we are 4 + dog and soon to invest in a L4 H2... Relay/Boxer/Ducato. This is the first Relay we have seen with a similar layout we are thinking about, we've only ever seen XLWB Sprinters. We are going to try and shoehorn a fixed bed in the back and a tiny tinette at the front, but its good to see it can be done. Nice work!
Hi. Thankyou. Yes most people who have 4 berths have xlwb vans, we can't go any bigger on our drive than this, so we have to utilise what limited space we have. This works well for us. But when I start my next one next year similar rear layout, but I'll be having the rear travel seats turn into a double bed and a fold down bed above the window. My kids are teens now so they don't want to share a bed together 🤣🤣🙈. It'll then free up space for a shower cubicle or more kitchen/storage. Good luck with your build 👍👍
Looks great. How much do you charge to convert a van?
Hi. Thankyou. I don't convert vans for people. I build them, use them and then sell when I'm ready to build my next one. It's just a hobby that I enjoy doing over winter. You can't beat freezing your tits off in a cold metal van wishing why you ever started. 🤣🤣🙈
It’s like the Tardis , very nice🏴👌🏻
Hey thankyou. Yes it's amazing what you can fit inside. When you have an empty van you think there's not enough room for it all.
What did you use to secure them underneath please? Did you use spreader plates?
Hey. With the rails, I didn't need to use spreader plates. on my first van I used spreader plates because I bolted the seats directly to the base. With the rails they came with fixing bolts and heavy duty washers
Nice video . The other way to make sure rails are square is to measure diagonally, corner to corner. Should be the same if square.
Hi Paul. Thankyou. Yes I went overkill and measured every way possible to make sure they were equal. 🤣🤣🙈
Thanks, I enjoyed your build
Hi, thankyou. I appreciate the kind words
Hi mate, what is the name of the fan ?. Thanks. Good job I'm thinking of doing mine just like yours. Even the Matt black vinyl. Then I saw your video.
Hey Simon, sorry about the late reply, I've been locked out of UA-cam for about 5 months. The fan was off eBay and so was the black wrap. I think the black wrap looks great, it makes them look more like campers rather than just the usual decals etc. I've just looked on eBay and the fans are still on there for £70 or best offer. The listing is: 12V Caravan Camper RV Ventilation Fan Roof Hatch Vent Exhaust Fan With Remote Good luck with your build bud 👍
Ive been trying to find this video for around ayear now. I didnt realise you changed your youtube name😅 finally i can start to put this bunk in my van. Still the best ive seen yet
Hey, yes I changed the name to keep everything the same. I'm glad you've managed to find it again and very happy to hear it has been of help for you. I remember having many sleepless nights not knowing how to get the kids bunks made and luckily it finally paid off and worked out. I hope it can be of help 👍👍
@Selfbuildcampers I hope it gives the inspiration/ boot up the y/know to get me going again! Cheers bud. Gratitude from plymouth
The old pink spirit levels the wifes. Yer, sure.
🤣🤣. She always wanted a pink tool kit. 15 years later, she still has it but I use it mostly in the garage to save me walking to my work van 🤣
You are my hero!
Hi. Thankyou. I'm guessing by that, the video helped you get your head around the set up 🤣. Glad it could be of help. 👍👍
Who names a city Cornwall 😂
Hey. Cornwall is classed as a county not a city.
Genius 👍 Love a good life hack 😄
Hi. Thankyou. Yes absolutely. Nothing better than little simple things which can save money and be useful.
That’s a great idea for a shower tray, in some respects much better than a purchased one because you’ve got good sides on the unit that combined with the waster water outlet and the cost roughly twenty pounds it’s simply brilliant. 😎
Hi, thankyou. Yes it was awesome and definitely made it easier with the height of the sides. It definitely does need a duck board in there to stand on though or to keep the potty level.
Do you have to pay monthly for it to work?
Hi, sorry for the late reply, I've been unable to get onto my account. No with these there is no monthly contract.
@@Selfbuildcampers does it use your phone to track your location then? Just wanting to know if it’s standalone
What seats are these? Are the unwin rails safe and crash tested? How high are the seats from the floor? We were going to build up this area so that the swivels in the front so that feet rest on the build up but the unwin rails need to go on the base of the van?
Hi. I'm guessing the seats are just welfare van rear seats, but These are different to my previous 2 vans in which I used seats from welfare vans. Yes the unwin rails are perfectly safe provided they are fitted correctly. It's the same as what they use in mini buses etc. You can get unwin rails much cheaper that have been taken out of old vans. My rear seats are quite low in this van as I didn't take into consideration the height difference. Both previous vans had a higher floor so were pretty level with the front seats. You can make the seats higher by adding a base plate which makes them higher so when you have front swivel seats, all are the same height. To raise the seats higher, you need to make sure it's a solid metal base fully secure to the van floor. You wouldn't for example be able to add on top of wooden batons to give extra height. Hope your van build is going well. Regards Dan
Thank you for the great video! Have you experienced any problems with leaking with a porthole that opens like that? I am going to put one in my van but not sure whether to go for a fixed shut one or opening one. Cheers :)
Hi there. Thankyou. I've put them in the previous 2 vans and never had any issues with leaking. The seal is really tight once they are closed. I would have put them in my new van but fancied full size windows this time. Would definitely recommend them. Hope your build is going well
Surprise. Suddenly on 11:40 there is a new Vent mounted. Who and how?😅
Maybe if you weren't playing with the battery in your hand shorting it out it might have lasted for a lot longer
Surely need to put it on your tongue for a great buzz 🐝
Great idea
Thankyou.
Mate, this is brilliant! I only have an H2 Transit custom, but still I really didn't want it any higher. This is defo being done to mine :)
Hey bud. Thankyou. I'm glad it can be of help. Hope your conversion is going well
@@SelfbuildcampersCheers mate, not starting for another 2 weeks, so this came in clutch as I was starting to stress over the idea of getting up on the roof lol. I was thinking about putting a second fan in the bulkhead passthough flap to allow fresh air to be drawn through from cracked windows in the front.
@@will1565 that's not a bad shout to be fair with the extra fan. I bet you can't wait to get started on the build.
looks great, where did you source the windows from?
Thankyou. The windows.ate from eBay. They were about £175ish each, but you get a discount if you order multiple. So I think it worked out to roughly £165 each. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124649154828?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=K7r3A80NSNS&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=5aP84fm6TXK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
you say a 12volt fan but is a USB plug not always 5 volt? thank you for the video LOVE it
Yes I think usb ones are 5v. Cheers bud
I will never be able to understand why people install glass windows that do not open.
Now that I've used this style, I totally agree. Previous vans I put mainly bonded windows in because of my budget being tighter than I have had on this one. But definitely going forward, I'll be opting for this type.
Applying wrap is one job I just cannot do. Ive tried and tried and end up just ripping it off. Ive heard every "all you need to do is" instructions, but I just cannot do it. I must have sent £100s worth of wrap down my local tip. If I decide to do it again I will pay the extra and have a professional do it. Although I built my whole camper from scratch, can do nearly every DIY job imaginable, I think sometimes in life we discover a job that we are just not cut out for.
I couldn't agree more. It seems like we all have that one DIY job that is like kryptonite to superman.
also use water spray, you wont get any bubbles on the paintwork.
This stuff doesn't cause bubbles, it has some fancy backing to avoid bubbles. Over the years I've wrapped quite a few things and have never seen anything as easy to use as this.
ah, prob that micro beading they use then. cheers @@Selfbuildcampers
You can buy magnets cheaply for this which make it easier than using tape
Cheers for that Steve, I may look into this for next time. Didn't even think of that, just always wasted tape instead lol
Van tour 👀
Hey. Yes the van should be done this weekend so will get a walkthrough video sorted
Awesome. Thanks!
You're welcome! And thank you
I have pwm in my shed, I loose a lot in summer when the voltage is higher cos pwm just turns pn and off and doesn't lower the voltage and increase the amps, it's OK in low power usage like my shed but on my camper i went mppt 👍 depends on your usage. I have 1 of my 5 panels sika flexed on the roof, 3 years, and it's still on there ( thankfully) 😂 make sure you use a UV stable bonding like sika 512, others break down on the sun 🤔 Your conversion is coming on well 😎
Hey bud. Yes if it was just for basic led lights etc, I probably would have stayed with the pwm controller. But last minute prior to the point of fixing the controller I decided I'd rather have smart mppt instead. Many just sika the panels to the roof and have no problems, but I know I'd always be paranoid, screws and bolts are always my preferred choice for that reason. 🤣🙈. What is your overall power if you have 5 panels. That's some output you must have.
@Selfbuildcampers only 400W for the house battery and that also charges the starter battery, the stuck on panel is only 40W but that only charges the chassis battery ( I have a transit they have a split charge 2 battery system on the van) , it an ex ambulance so rather complicated 🤣 You picked the wrong time of year for reliable filming weather 😢
Hello mate, can any seat fit on the unwin rails? Looking at some Citroen berlingo rear seats that I want to put in my Peugeot boxer. Thanks
Hey. There's a variety of different types of locking clamps to secure seats to unwin rails. The ones I used had various fixing point patterns on them to be able to bolt the legs to.
Can you share details of the materials used? The locking clamps
Nice work safety first you never know when you have to hit them brakes quick keep up the good work👍👍
Cheers bud 👍. Yes absolutely, I'd sooner be OCD and over the top when it comes to safety and not take any chances
Great to see you back in the saddle... looking forward to seeing all the good stuff again!
Cheers buddy. Yes definitely feels weird chatting to the back of my phone again 😂😂
Good to see you back you can have mine I giving up on vans now 😂
Yes it's been a while. You had enough now then of the vanlife?
Did I miss the part where you purchased the shower tray ?
Hey bud, it's an activity tray from Amazon
BOO|M. Love how settled this Campervan. Can I contact you for a view ?
Cheers bud, yes viewing is more than welcome, the listing on eBay ends Monday evening the link to eBay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204492821749?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=5aP84fm6TXK&sssrc=2524149&ssuid=5aP84fm6TXK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
*Awesome! What you used as that 'exhaust' enclosure outside? Cheers bruh*
Hi, Thankyou. On the outside i used an exterior air vent from screwfix. It's designed to withstand high winds.
Awesome work, thank you for sharing!
Thankyou, I appreciate the feedback
Good idea add a screen 2 keep out the bugs
Thankyou. Luckily we never had any unwelcome bugs. I mainly had them open of a night time in bed. All dark and pretty much had an arm out the one and a leg out the other. Enough to scare the bravest of bugs lol
Watched the video then watched the boyfriend rig it up in about 10 mins! A* instructions
Awesome stuff. I'm glad it has been of help. This is why i do these videos, thankyou
Just come across your channel - sound like your from my way (Dudley). Reslly helpful videos - thanks for uploading!
Hey, yes i'm not far from dudley, we're over at the lickey hills side. I'm glad the videos have been of some help. Thankyou
Did you use heavy duty m8 bolts or are they a different size
Hey James. Yes i believe they were m8. It's what came with the rails and seats. They were fatter than my solar panel bolts which were m6
Best bunks I've seen yet in a camper, and ive researched 100's! 🤙
Hey, Thankyou for the great feedback. The months of head scratching paid off in the end and was worth it.
I can’t see the link for the thin trim
Hello, i have the same tap, however it leaks from the blue inlet. It has come out once. Does anyone else have problems with this?
Hi Steven. If it's leaking from the blue inlet, I would possibly say it's a product fault. If not too late, I'd recommend sending the tap back for a replacement
is the cls timber defo 38x38 carnt seem to find that size
only one i can find is 19 x 38 x 1800mm
Hi, the timber I used was from b&q. Your local store may have been out of stock but yes 38*38 is what I used.
thank you :)@@Selfbuildcampers
Whats that clamp called when making , for your frame please
Hi, sorry about the late reply, I never had a notification. The clamp I used was from b&q and it's just a 90degree clamp. Hope this helps if you haven't already sorted it
