A channel full of all kinds of rides and bikepacking adventures, bike builds and other bike-related stuff. There’s even some Ebike content too.
I’m a fan of all things cycling and spent a few years as a bike technician with my own shop building custom bikes and restoring retro and vintage bicycles.
I ride a lot of gravel, and road ride with my club - Velo Moira, I also commute to work using my home made bafang mid drive bike and my newly converted Specialized Turbo Vado SL.
My videos are down to earth and feature all of the folks I usually ride with, and the adventures and rides we go on!
Return of the ATB? - Rare Raleigh Maverick Pro bike restoration
In this episode I’m taking on a super rare Raleigh ATB, in this shape of this maverick pro 18, made from Reynolds 531 tubing in the Raleigh SBDU unit.

Building and riding a Flat Bar Gravel Bike - how does it compare to drop handlebars?

In today’s jam packed episode I’m building a gravel bike with flat bars to see how it compares to riding with drop handlebars. I bought this Pinnacle Arkose D3 frame and have kitted it out with parts I have lying around the workshop. As this is a smaller frame than I normally ride, I spent entirely too long worrying about the length of seatpost, while at the same time going in search of 90s sty...

The Peddars Way on Gravel Bike - A Bikepacking option for beginners?…
Good decision putting back the mudguards on.
I think they finished the bike off, plus always nice to have in the rain!!
is the turbo Vado upright and comfortable or, is it very similar to a road bike?
With the flat bars or with the drop conversion, it’s very comfortable for the most part. It’s the aluminium fork that causes the most discomfort to be honest - which is why I’ve added a redshift stem
What an amazing bargain and build! I love the retro look. Good job.
Thanks very much - still can’t believe I got it for so little!
Hmmm, I wonder why there's a CTC sticker on a road bike ... interesting.
The CTC (Cyclists Touring Club) was pretty popular way back I believe. As someone who used to deal and restore vintage bikes, that sticker was usually a warning that the bike would be worn out and hiding lots of bodges and repairs 🤣🤣
@@Downhillsmoothtarmac I'll bear that in mind if I ever open my own shop 😅 ! Just thought it was bizarre to see a touring sticker on a bike not made for touring, is all. Maybe the old owner had one lying around and simply wanted to show off CTC membership...
You’re right it’s an odd choice but the previous owner had done some odd stuff to it! Including a triple chainset, extra bottle bosses and bullhorn bars!
£25? TWENTY-FIVE QUID?! Were you wearing a mask and black-and-white striped jumper when you agreed that price?! That's insane! Lovely build/service, though. Like how the original parts came up especially, always marvellous to have gleaming old-school bits 😁.
Hey thanks man, Yep it was £25, I even offered to pay the chap more, but he honoured the price - really decent bloke selling loads of bikes basically
@@Downhillsmoothtarmac Wow, fair play to the lad - what goes around comes around as they say so hope he gets his good stuff soon 👍
A set of Billy Bonkers rarely fails to bring a vintage frame bang up-to-date, nice work!
Thanks very much dude! Appreciated - I like a Halo H Block too, very slick
mee too
Great for winter riding
Geoffrey was that top headset bearing upside down ?? I do enjoy your videos!
It was Rich 🤣 it’s all better now - can’t believe I missed that while filming mate 🤣
@Downhillsmoothtarmac nice one Keep up the great work 💪
Thanks Rich, hope you’re all well down in Brizzle mate 👍
@@Downhillsmoothtarmac all good Geoffrey apart from biblical rain today ☔!
Good stuff mate - same up here, pouring down!
You have fitted the top headset bearing race upside down.
I’m guessing you mean the caged bearing rather than the top race, but yep well spotted! I’ll be honest, when you’re talking to camera and filming it’s so easily done - hope you still enjoyed the video! 😁
I always enjoy them. keep up the great work 😊
Thanks so much, really appreciate it 👍🙂
that fork rake!
Oh yeah, that’s the off road way in 86 mate 🤣🤣🤣
Oh yeah!!! That’s the off road way in 86 mate
How can a bike shop not have a bb tool!
😁 it’s not a standard tool, it’s some four pin Suntour type thing - only seen one on one other bike in my time…
@@Downhillsmoothtarmacfair enuf, thanks for replying
No worries, thanks for watching 👍👍
Gravel bikes with flat bars at around 55cm long are king!
550mm?! Super narrow dude with proper retro MTB vibes! - I went for 780mm on that build, might have to try it 😎😎😎
@ its amazing, trust me, it’ll be a thing in a few years.
@thedownunderverse I’m pretty sure @keepsmilingadventures is running super narrow bars already on his gravel bike…
@@Downhillsmoothtarmac thats the thing, I’m not sure why 55cm is considered to be narrow for a graveller. It’s about 15cm wider than the typical drop bars, and 15cm shorter than typical XC bars. It’s the logical crossover length, and having the brakes always accessible makes sense on loose surfaces. Not to mention MTB group-sets are way cheaper and easier to work on than road stuff… it’ll catch on eventually.
It does make sense, and certainly is better for cost too with flat bar kit being so much cheaper - guess I’m just going to have to try it 👍👍
Spin that crank 😂. What a lovely build - back to your vintage bike origins.
Thanks Dave, can’t wait to get out and get it muddy!
I remember these lol 52 years young now.. had a Raleigh burner to, lots of BMXs after that to till I was in my 20s 😊 and skateboarding.. great job dude looks super nice looks like new.. very smooth cranks.. have you tried an ultrasonic cleaner ?
Thanks man, I’m so happy with how it’s turned out! I’d love an ultrasonic cleaner when costs allow, I used to use one belonging to a friend of mine a while back - very handy
Bullmoose bars look cool. I found a titanium bullmoose bar from China. I think it was $150, or so. Quality is perfect. I must say, it makes the bike.
I’ll have a good look around - will get some eventually 🤞
What sort of tyres do you recommend for winter road cycling om an old 26" GT Palomar? Its my only way to get to work. Is there anything that will make the black ice mornings safe?
Black ice is a tough one, save for possibly studded tyres, there isn’t too much that can guarantee you safe travels, but knobblies and lower pressure will help. I’ve had a couple of good tumbles of black ice - it’s the worst!
@@Downhillsmoothtarmac Thanks, even if I got studs it probably still isn't safe on the roads anyway due to the cars sliding haha! In Finland at the minute and it's very interesting seeing the conditions people still commute in! Even here, studs aren't universal. By knobblies, you mean like the traditional mtb tyres they come with, like schwalbe nobby nic or something?
What a beauty £25 for it as well absolute bargain. I'll admit it this is my favourite build of yours so far what a Beautiful frame and fork can't wait to see it in action
Hey thanks so much mate! I can’t wait to get it out in the mud!
Excellent ratchet action there Geoff 😂 I like the look of the bike.
Thanks JC 🤣 making the most of my ratchet spanner’s before I loose them in the mess!!
I've got a set of bullmoose handlebars quill stem for sale if your interested ??
Cheers man, just replied to you on Insta!
Thanks for the video. Nice build. Im no purist. I love a resto-mod. The best part is overcoming the small engineering problems you encounter when mixing eras. At present Im building up a winter bike on a mid 80's MIYATA. Ive made my own stem adaptor to accommodate modern bars and stem. Ive also run the brake cables through the bars and stem. The front brake cable exits bottom of stem bare, extending down to v-brake, this eliminated the stem mounted cable stop, and is clean like a washing machine. The rear bkake cable exits the bars out the front center clamping area through a void in the stem clamp. It plays out very well from here, making a tidy loop to the top tube. Ive got studded Schwalbe Marathons in 35 mm. The bars Ive wrapoed in homemade, real leather tape I made from a found attache case. It performs quite well in winter. For a saddle Im using a Brooks cadmium. Im keeping the Suntour downtube shiters, as we know, they accommodate pretty much any derailleurs you like. Using a 50/34 chainring with an 8spd freewheel on modern-ish ALEX wheels. LOOK S-track pedals add to the old meets new look and performance. Ive built myself a few winter bikes over the years, my last being a KUWAHARA touring frame. Im swapping everything from the Kuwahara to the MIYATA as Ive found a larger frame with longer wheelbase is better in the snow.
Thanks for watching! Sounds like a great build you’ve got there, love the idea of the home made leather tape and your other adaptions to make it work for your needs. That’s my favourite part of bike mechanic work, adapting and making things work well together!
Cock eyed way of looking at doing the mudguards....lol....looking at it with ya cock?....aaah hahaha
Very nice video, it was relaxing and informative at the same time.
Thanks so much - glad you enjoyed it! 👍👍
Steel rimmed wheels? Or did you replace with alloy??
They were alloy originally, then I replaced with a custom hand built set with new old stock alloy rims
@Downhillsmoothtarmac thanks for your Answer. I have recently purchased a Peugeot bike, unfortunately it's a carbolite frame so nothing exotic, but still has steel rimmed wheels, not the best in the wet
Nothing wrong with a bit of carbolite at all - I’ve had loads of them - even made a video of turning one into a gravel bike on here. An alloy upgrade and fresh pads will knock a ton of weight off the bike, won’t cost much and the bike will stop really well! Winner! 👍👍
@@Downhillsmoothtarmac cool will look into that. Yeah definitely an easy win for weight.
Does it ride better?
Yeah much better in my opinion, picks up and handles more stably I think
Good video, sound levels could be bit more even though😊
Thanks for the feedback, I’ve changed a lot of things since this video, glad you still enjoyed it though!
I have Croix De Fer 20 2016 nice bike

That is a very nice and sensible build. May I ask where did you source the adapter/extender for the brake pads to be long enough for 700c? Thx
Thanks very much 👍 If you have a look on Amazon, you’ll find them easily.
i can feel you enjoying the bike😊
Thanks, it’s such a fun bike!
i admire the classic triple triangle geometry
It’s a true cycling classic!
Looks awesome!
Thanks man, really pleased with it
Maybe you should put some varnish to the frame to guarantee that will not rust, but I can be wrong. Nice looking btw without the paint
Luckily the frame is aluminium so rust isn’t an issue, it will require regular polishing to keep the finish good though. I’ve done bare steel before and a good coat of lacquer keeps it pretty good for a fair while
@@Downhillsmoothtarmac I recently went bare steel with my Roberts racing bike after a frame repair. After much research I went for a coat of melted beeswax to 'stop' rust as both wet lacquer and powdercoat clearcoat allow moisture to pass through. It's messy, but seems to be doing the job very well. Apparently, it has been used for many many years by engineers to stop the tools rusting. Great video BTW! 👍
Bike looks cool
Thanks so much - I’m really pleased with how it turned out!
Good stuff, love my SS bikes. Keep up the great content.
Thanks man, I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed the bike!
Perfection! Looks great, love it!
Hey thanks so much!!!
I have a R600 from 1989 that I bought brand new. I don't ride it any more but it hangs on my wall because I once won a race while riding it.
They’re a good looking bike - well worth keeping on display!
Does it have a carbon fork?
Yeah the fork blades are carbon, with an alloy crown and dropouts
I still have one of these hanging up here that I bought brand new in 1989. I won a bike race in college on that bike.
Man that’s cool! Just shows how far ahead they were back then!!!
Is there going to be a video/series for this project? Used the original video as inspiration for one of my builds so I’d be keen to see any further upgrades. 👍🏻
There certainly is! The bike has been upgraded a fair bit, will be coming in the next couple of weeks!
Also, just in case you missed the initial build…. Building and riding a Flat Bar Gravel Bike - how does it compare to drop handlebars? ua-cam.com/video/8EEBWIb-pcU/v-deo.html
Shame it was cancelled!
Yeah, we were gutted, so ran the distance locally on the Saturday - hopefully try again next year
BB of 26 inch bikes is quite high from ground with less drop, compared to original gravel-bikes. Won't BB be too high by converting to 650b?
This is a point many people seem to make, in my personal opinion the difference is negligible, and I certainly haven’t noticed any detrimental effects on the bikes that I have converted. In fact I feel the handling improves thanks to the small increase in diameter.
