Freya Smith - "Built to Burn" 4/28/2024
Finally got around to performing this beast of a song I wrote at the recital today. Many thanks to all my people for being there and supporting me - it was great, and y'all made it that much better!
This is probably the most relaxed I've been at a recital so far. Pretty weird watching myself playing a guitar solo...
Fun fact: I almost forgot the very last line of the song!
Band:
Freya Smith - vocals and guitar
Mike Smith - guitar (and equipment)
Vocal instructor: Trey Scarborough
Video credit: Jordan Smith
Thanks for having the brains to use your phone when I forgot to hand you the camera!
Lyrics:
In the time of the war, you sailed around the world
Then you came back home
You came to raise a family
Where you built your home
Your son, had kids of his own, with his wife
And we lived next door
Growin' up here, I can remember
How the place used to thrive
So come on! Tell me where it went wrong
Said come on! Tell me why it's all gone
Hoses in the street
Water at my feet
Scared of what I was to see
Walkin' through, what ain't there anymore
I keep thinkin' of things she used to say
Things I still, remember today
I cried the most before the day
But when it'd come, I'd run out of tears
Walkin' through my memories
Walkin' through that door
Not the same as it used to be
When the ceiling's on the floor
I never saw the fire
But they told me it was high
This home, was built to burn
But never come down
You know, you built it to burn
Now they're tearin' it down!
You know, you built it to burn
It's a hole in the ground!
Lost your wife, losin' your mind
Just like your home, you rise and fall
I keep walkin' the stairs to nowhere
Dreamin' of matchsticks, and missin' time
There'll be no more sliding glass reflections
End is comin' in the mornin' light
So come on! Tell me where it wrong
Said come on! Tell me why it's all gone
Your home, the lady
Tell me why - why it's all gone!

Another great recital today covering Jefferson Airplane's classic, "Somebody to Love." This was a lot of fun. My voice wasn't in the best condition, but I gave it all I had (without overdoing the volume on the mic). We actually had a great balance between all three of us this time. I was nervous as hell, of course, but I had a great support system and apparently was in my element. A few people ...

It wasn't perfect, but it sure was fun! Different venue, and I still got to hang around with some of my favorite people and listen to great performances from my fellow students. In the smaller, less cavernous space, having decided against using microphones, this is the best sound we've gotten so far. Thanks everybody for makin' it groovy! We did this cover based on Birtha's 1972 version of the ...

I said this already, but I think I honestly prefer the unintentional verse rearrangement with the forgotten first verse. Starting with one's backstory, as it were, is a very logical way to open a song. Of course, if you sing it balls-to-the-wall enough, it doesn't matter what words you forget. 😂 And in this case I believe you killed it - so hard, it's practically beating a dead horse. 😛
