Remember this folks.
A country might look good on paper, or on a UA-cam video, but what about the “Chemistry” between you, the individual and the country and culture as a whole?
This is something we can’t know in advance. We can only make our move, dive in and test the waters…….and see how it goes.

    Don, thanks for making an exception to your standard policy and offering some advice in this video. I think your viewers will be well served by it. You have been down this road before and we who are yet to travel that road will ignore your advice at our peril. It behooves us to take advantage of the experience of people like you who can alert us to the pitfalls in such things as renting an apartment (whether temporary or not), and in medical/dental tourism, and in the pros and cons of various medical insurance, etc. Just so you know, I enjoy your podcasts as well as your videos and I make a point to listen to them. I would like to think that in having this view, I have a lot of company.

    Your rental agent is a POS and liar. Unless you damaged the water dispensor somehow you are not responsible as it came with the apartment. I agree about the bad landlords here. As a landlord with apartments in the US I also run credit and background check so why not here if its a short term rental and they dont have a visa. You are right in that there are bad apples everywhere but as a prperty owner I would never rent without one. I have never had an issue. But if they have a 2 year visa etc here a criminal background check was supposed to had already been done. The downside is a bad local could use your SS number to steal your identity as you would need to give that and other information to run a background check. Its a hard decision. Also dont pay the last 2 months rent and negotiate with the landlord for any damage but dont pay for wear and tear. If they accuse you of any damage as them for photls to prove it. Also any apartment that is furnished if it breaks they are required to fix it as the apartment came furnished. They simply hope you are ignorant to the laws. If they dont replace it and take it out of the rent. Also never talk verbally. Only speak on Whatsapp to have a papertrail trail including any exchange of documents etc. We have a copy of the tenancy laws here

    • @DonShader
      @DonShader 3 години тому

      You have a copy of the tenancy laws here? Can I have a copy? I'll keep it for spare toilet paper because that's all its worth. And you're right about NOT giving out the SS number. That's the dumbest thing an expat can do in Ecuador. Everything yiu are saying about "they're supposed to do this and do that" here in Ecuador is a waste of pure oxygen and I can't believe you actually spent the time to type all that. I appreciate your feedback anyway.

    I have been blessed with my experience with AirBnB 's in Ecuador 🇪🇨 that includes Quito, Cuenca, Manta, Atacames, and Tonsupa. These were all two bedroom condos or larger. The average price was $40 per night. In Manta we stayed on the 9th, top floor of the Torres Marina building in a wonderful AirBnB. I believe the unit was 109. No problems with safety in any of these places. We presently live in Quito in El Centro Histórico, a stones throw from La Basílica. The land lord wanted two months in rent for security deposit, but I negotiated for one month. I concur with Bluebox Insurance and Carlos. They're great people. But I wouldn't have known about Bluebox Insurance if not for Attorney Sara Chaca, at Ecuador Visas. Sara and her staff are amazing and handled every aspect of my immigration to Ecuador. Sara Chaca's main office is in Cuenca, but she also has an office in Quito. They are a very courteous and professional group of people if you're needing a visa and cédula. Living in Quito at 9,500 feet above sea level I have no problem with the elevation. We often play at altitudes between 12,500 and 14,000 feet at TeleféríQo, and 16,000 feet above sea level at the José Rivas Refugio, the staging point for the final ascent of Cotopaxi Volcano. No problems at 16,000 feet running around with Cristiano, my twenty year old Quechua Indian Equatorianous son. I am age 66 going on 67. If I can do it, so can you! Don, you're doing a great job! Everyone enjoy Ecuador! It's a charming country.

    Don... There is a Top Dental in Quito also. I wonder if they are the same. I had a 6 tooth upper bridge done in South Korea with a dentist in Seoul that was supposed to be the best. The bridge broke a year later when I went home as the dentist didn't do implants in the middle to reinforce the bridge. Was I suppose to return to SK on a 11 hour flight even if he would fix it? He wouldn't even apologize. Now in Quito I had a new upper partial made that is beautiful for 160.00. The old one in the US coated 1500 over 8 years ago. So yes I saved money but not even a month later the partial needs adjusting and the dentist says that I may have stretched the wiring. Really? Latinos are the worst to place blame on others and never themselves called Viveza Corolla. I have noticed whenever I have an issue regardless of the service ots never their fault. So the lady coming here better hope everything goes well because will she have the time or want to have to return for any adjustments, problems etc as most dental procedures never are finished the first go around even in the US? You and I live here and can return to the dentist with any issues. Yes the US is beyond unaffordable but dental work on others countries quality is overrated

    • @DonShader

      Tjhe one in Quito has no affiliation with the one in Manta. I don't agree or disagree on all the rest of your statement. Everybody has a different story.

    A friend has suggested that I come down to the Manta area (South of City on Coast) for a while this winter. My concerns are Air quality on the coast and from Dec to April is the wet season, just how much rain is there in the rainy season, sunshine in the day or clouds and rain every day. Thank you for providing honest information that I believe we can trust.

    • @DonShader
      @DonShader 3 години тому

      The rainy season simply means that there is more of a chance you'll see rain from dec to May. Last year, there was not that much but the year before was torrential and my apartment was flooded. Air quality is always good here in Manta because of the prevailing winds but occasionally we might get a sniff of a fuel spill in the ocean. Don't expect to see sunny skies every day in Manta. I'll say there are more cloudy days than sunny ones.

I've just about completely stopped going to my favorite breakfast spot which is located in the mall because the satff in the mall likes to play the music at a level that is unbearable. Even sitting in the restaurant, the mall music can sometimes be so lound that I can't even carry a conversation inside the restaurant. Once the mall opens, they turn it down a little.

    Is there a sewer system? A couple of years ago, I toured the neighborhood and looked at several lots -- but I was turned off by the community sewer/septic system, which caused an odor in the breeze in some parts of the development. The sales rep said they were working with the town of MC to hook up to the muni sewer. Did that ever happen?

    • @DonShader
      @DonShader 5 днів тому

    Off the subject, but Don, do you know if the new condos have steel beams in them now? I know the older buildings were just bricks on top of bricks with a little re-rod. I was there before and after the big earthquake and lots of those buildings have interior structural damage, so I'd recommend to new expats to make sure their building have steel beams. Lots of earthquakes and tremblors when I was there. The older buildings were just patched up on the outside. I'm eventually going to buy there, so was just wondering.

    Have you ever thought of having your clothes made in Manta. My parents live there ( they were both born there ) and they will take a photo from a website...go to the fabric store and pick their fabric and then take it to a seamstress. Very inexpensive ( fabric was about 3.50$ and seamstress was 20$ but this was for a formal piece of attire). Just an idea:)

    That was very helpful and great interview Don! I will definitely be contacting Francisco sometime in the future to discuss a build.

    It's inaccurate to say there is "no supply and demand". There is HUGE supply but NO demand. Everything is for sale and for rent, but few Ecuadorians have any free capital. And the net expat population flow is currently OUT of the country, further creating a surplus. Buying or building in Ecuador should be treated as a depreciating asset and expense - NOT an investment. Only build or buy if you really want to live here for a while... because you are essentially guaranteed to lose money on it, should you decide to sell... at least in the next few years

      Do you have any real data to back up your claim? Or is this just hear-say on your part?

      @@DonShader Data? This is Ecuador. Nobody keeps reliable data on anything. But come to Quito... there were dozens of high rise apartment towers built and they are all half empty with "ariendo" signs in the windows. I know expats here who have been trying to sell their condos for 5 years with no offers

      I don't know him. I don't know if his statements are based on factual data and as you can see from his response below, he simply simply doesn't have any.
