it sounded like you said you fused the neutral side of the polarized cord, would it not be better to fuse the hot side ?
The 120 volt units were originally wired with power switch on one side of the transformer and fuse on the other. I know, it seems odd because with a non-polarized cord it's a 50/50 chance of either being hot. With a polarized cord I was taught to always have it on the switch side.
You should go buy a lottery ticket Bryan while you luck is hot lol.
I had that exact Panasonic radio in white - I was 12 years old in 73 and was in the hospital recovering from being hit by a car and my aunt gave it to me as a gift - loved that thing and it was still working around 1980 when it was stolen out of my car - it was a nice piece - I can almost here the on switch engaging .
Panasonic made great stuff in those years. I had a "Take n' Tape that was really cool.
That's nice stuff! Remember the German band 'Trio' from the 1980's and their song 'Da Da Da'? That would be the first thing I'd play on that amp because that's just how warped I am.
Makes sense to me, followed by some Dio!
Truly a shipping miracle 🍀🙏🎉
for the filter cap......would a 10000uf 63v capacitor be ok as a replacement?
That would certainly firm up the bass. It will draw a bit more current at turn on but as long as it fits in the same spot as the original it's good.
@@acrossthedial . thanks. what brand was the filter cap you put in the TA1010?
@@standupstraight9691 It was a Jamecon gold
@@acrossthedial . 🙂👍
I'm a long term accumulator. I just don't get rid of stuff, especially if it was given to me. LOL! Mine isn't generally high end or highly desirable but it's all well designed and well built, good stuff. Now I'm getting them cleaned up and fixed up to use again. I became a minor collector this year buying a couple more mid-70's receivers. For cars I've had mostly Pontiac over the years, including a 1970 Firebird Formula 400. I had sold a '66 Ventura to a guy in Kitchener. Currently I have a '68 low option Tempest OHC6 sedan and a 1970 MGB GT, both for 20 or more years now. I guess I just like old things, even my house is from 1949.
Like you, I appreciate quality and don't mind spending money on gear that has been taken care of. The guy selling those Heathkits is so typical of flippers who have no idea of what separates a nice piece of audio gear from something that has been neglected or abused, they just see the name and the dollar amount. I'm glad you walked away from the deal.
I think it's happened to every single one of us- hopefully only once. I clean those with detail Q-tips like I am playing the game "Operation".
Mine had this, maybe it was already modified.
I recall seeing this brand advertised in some electronics catalogs way back, at the time it was well regarded as having quality product line. Thanks.
While Windex will work safely on most early audio equipment, it will remove the silkscreening from chrome-plated McIntosh chassis. Use Never-Dull wadding instead. As for silkscreened glass dials, no cleaning agent is safe; best you can do is use distilled water with Qtips and cotton balls, and carefully work around the numbers, lettering and dial scale.
PCB with coils is a IF amplifier or stereo decoder?
I believe it's the discrim8nator and decoder.
THOSE HAVE STILL A SOUL...........
Listen, I'm telling you from experience. After Thanksgiving, start listening to the all -Christmas channels. Tube receivers sound phenomenal playing Christmas music. They were mostly mixed mono, and for tube gear when they were made. BUT, you have to run them through a tube amp, not that Radio Shack amp. I always prep a tube receiver about now for that. I'm working on a Zenith AM/FM tube radio that's coughing up hairballs. It'll be ready by Thanksgiving.
So true about the tube sound!
Nice!
I have a Philco 116B radio. I tried cleaning the dial wih plain water. The numbers came off like rhey had never dried at the factory. Fortunately replacement dials are available.
Great tip!
KABLOO-IE! 🤣
Early Marantz, like the Model 18 and Model 19, have easily-ruined lettering on the glass as well.
Hello many thanks for all your helpful videos. Could you do a quick video on actual adjustment of the bias and setting the protection circuit please 🙏
This video covers those adjustments ua-cam.com/video/aowZPhqN3rw/v-deo.htmlsi=I29U60bRD2pbiKHE
I'll do a new video on the Kenwood protection circuit soon.
@@acrossthedial many thanks for your helpful videos and recommendations and responses.
@@acrossthedial hi Bryan, I saw your other video that mentioned using a resistor for the protection circuit instead of a pot. Is this still your preferred method? Many thanks.
@@MustangBoss1973 I came up with the resistor method because it was hard to find a 10k Bourne pot during the pandemic parts shortages. Either way is good.
Love these type of videos.good job .thanks for that little demonstration
All good Bryan. Old Kenwood is great. It's as you probably know the precursor to Accuphase. I got a KA6000. It's a great sounding amp. They went all out in this model. I agree that the KA2000 is good. The simpler the better in many ways. There is a lot of snobbery out there. I've heard some very pricey stuff to that I cannot afford but I'm good with what I have. Great videos mate.
I don't have the budget to be a snob. LOL! My old stuff I've had many years, and that I started in this hobby with almost a year ago, are pretty entry level. Before getting into vintage audio I never knew anything about them being low end, but they've always sounded so good to me. So I'm perfectly happy getting it restored, and buying other low end/low power, but **well designed** equipment. 😃
I have been trying to get one of these but haven't snagged one yet. I see a lot of KA-2002A models that look the same except they are all aluminum as far as I can see. Are they the same internally?
The biggest difference is the pre-in and pre-out jacks were deleted on the later KA-2002A.
It certainly isn't a waste of your time in my opinion. They are fantastic after you restore them.
Hi Bryan. You are so right. I'm still enjoying my KT1000/TK-150U combination each of which you refurbed in the past. They bring me joy equal to any of the other rigs I have in my house. Let the snobs go hang with other snobs so we can keep these secrets to ourselves without driving prices sky-high. I really appreciate what you had to say about the landfill issue as well. Such a shame to rob future listeners of great audio experiences.
Despite all the audio snobbery, I still enjoy my 8 tracks.
Enjoy your videos very much, thank you!
I think the correct value would be 1uF. Given what looks like a 56K load resistor right after it, and the very high input impedance of the tone control circuit that follows (caused by the negative feedback wrapped around the circuit), 10uF would give a low frequency F3 of about 0.3Hz, which is unnecessarily low. 1uF gives an F3 of about 3Hz, which is more reasonable. Also, the tone controls have a 1uF input cap. The schematic is a little out of focus, so I might be reading these values wrong. Oh, and they're not really forming a bipolar I don't think, because the cap in question is DC biased by the collector voltage and the 56K resistor.
I listened to the amp through the phono stage and can't hear a difference between the 2 caps although technically there is a difference.
it really helps to understand when you refer to the schematic, thank you
Nice find, Bryan!
It obviously passed quality control. And nobody noticed up till now. I mean I've had bad caps that the ESR meter couldn't even measure them. And the amplifier still worked. Actually sounded okay. Lol. Modern electronics are not not as forgiving.
Must have been a Monday morning or Friday afternoon assembly line.
They retailed for $129.95 in Australia and were often on special for $79.95. The big brother was the Minimus 22 but nothing ever came close to the fantastic T200 or Mach 1 speakers. Rdio Shack/Tandy audio products were always underrated except by leading hifi magazines that knew how good they really were.
I own one with the wood case.
I still have a set.
Great video. Great camera I have one here in uk in the same condition. By the way Thorium wasn't added to Super Takumars until 1965/66 with the model 37800 50mm f1.4 - 7 element and the Model 37102 55mm f1.8. The lens issued with the S1a was either model 345-3 or 345-6 55mm f2.0 produced until late 1965. There are also 2 models of the S1a one with a Green letter R on rewind crank and the later one has a Red letter R on the rewind crank The latter one will accept the 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar but this lens will be damaged if used on the earlier Green R version. Mike.
Just did the same job on my 2215b. Instead of 3300 was 425
I have the same pair. They are in perfect condition. I want to find one of the several receivers RS made that had a special EQ button on the back specifically for these speakers.
I was fortunate enough to run across a pair in the wood cabinets a couple of years ago. They were in a box in the back of a small thrift shop. Just about wet myself. Got both for $5. They are Japanese made. I'm not giving them up ever as they remind me when I use to lust after gear in the Radio Shack catalog, but didn't have a nickel to buy anything. I would go once a week to Radio shack and immerse myself in the sound and smells of brand-new electronics........The staff were always so nice and professional, even to my teenage self.
Saturday afternoons at Radio Shack. I remember one time just before Christmas early 80's buying some batteries (big spender) and the owner asked me to pick up a hotdog and drink for him because he was working alone and couldn't leave. I brought him his lunch and change from a $5-. He gave me a 3pack of blank cassettes for my errand. Wow!
In UK Realistic was always considered a budget non hifi brand. We didnt see many here.
Right down there with Lafayette. Unserious stuff.
I had a set of these, back around 1986😁
I have several pairs of the metal versions. A pair of my later ones are being used as Dolby Atmos height speakers. I’m surprised that no speaker manufacturer picked up where Radio Shack left off.
Sweet , minimus 7 in walnut, the most desirable version. I have a pair still in service on a stepped ceiling and hang them as height speakers on the home theatre. The avr crosses them over internally at 80hz. They work great.
Same set-up here. Rear Atmos duty for me. I'll never part with them! Excellent speakers.
