It's wonderful to see this! I worked on 5025 in the 1980's on the Strathspey. I think it was in 1986 in fact. Being the new kid, and a thin one at that, I was sent into the firebox with a flare lamp (there was a power cut) and changed a couple of warped firebars. There were still a few glowing embers 3 days after we had dropped the fire. The most singular experience had been earlier that week. I had been sent to get some porridge oats. In fact we cleared out the Ben O Gar (if I remember the name correctly) local store at Boat Of Garten of its supply of oats. The purpose of this was to caulk the boiler, via the tender if I remember. It was to prepare her for her boiler test. She smelled absolutely wonderfully of porridge and steam- delicious (I swear she still smelled of porridge 6 months later). At Aviemore shed we were priming the lubricator. This involved turning a small wheel on the lubricator which was on the running board. It made a rather nice zipping or ratcheting noise but it took absolutely ages to prime and so we took it in turns. It was at this point that a nice old gentleman- obviously a steam man of some standing, came up to me and told us that oats were a luxury and in his day they caulked the boiler with horse sh*t. I never got to fire her but had a good few footplate rides between Aviemore and Boat as we worked on her and I was shown the ropes and had the cab explained to me. 'My' engine- by that I mean the one I was allowed to train on, was 0-6-0 Austerity no.60, so I was all over her, cleaning, oiling and even firing. We had come back from Aviemore one evening and left her (5025) at the station while we nipped into the Boat Hotel for a meal. She was just across the car park at the platform. Suddenly there was this tremendous roar and we all jumped. Although we had damped the fire down, she had still managed to blow off. For a kid it was really quite a novelty as I wasn't used to staying away from home. it was one of the most enjoyable periods of my life and I was with a great bunch of people. Happy times indeed!
