Yellow Ochre Watercolour Comparison: Daniel Smith Rosa Schmincke Shinhan PWC W&N Van Gogh & more
Hello Everybody,
As you may know, I do love a watercolour swatch card. As I've added quite a few new versions of yellow ochre, I thought it was high time I did a side-by-side comparison.
What's your favourite yellow ochre, or do you prefer another earth yellow? Do let me know in the comments.
PY42 versions: Jackman's, Shinhan PWC, Schmincke Akademie, Van Gogh and W&N Cotman
PY43 versions: Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton Professional
Rosa Gallery (PY43 & PY42)
Schmincke Horadam Yellow Raw Ochre (PY42 & PY43)
They were all swatched on a piece of Goldline Studio Pad paper: store.evansartsupplies.ie/product/21204/Goldline-Watercolour-Studio-Pad/

Hello Everybody, After finally swatching all my Roman Szmal watercolour paints, I put together my palette. I can't remember when exactly, but I'd say I filmed this late October 2024. Then I got a few more RS colours for Christmas, so I'll to rearrange things soon. Which means there will be an update to this palette in the not too distant future. I enjoy seeing other people's palettes, I hope so...

Best Rosa Gallery Granulating Watercolour Paints of 2024 (24 Granulating Watercolour Mixes Day 25)

Hello Everybody, After making all sorts of mixes with my Rosa Gallery watercolour paints all month, I've sat down and thought about which ones I'd recommend most. I didn't just base it on their granulating properties, but also on which ones might add to the paints you already have. I am a big fan of all the granulating and super-granulating convenience mixes that exist now. But the more I paint...

Lovely haul! Can’t wait to see what you create with it!
Thanks Thea! I haven't used them much yet, but I'm just not a January person 😂
Great information on some beautiful colors, thanks!
@@ElizabethMayoleth You are very welcome! Glad you enjoyed, thank you ☺️
I still can’t see the beauty in yellow ochre. I’ll wait for the gold ochres, though 😊.
@@awatercolourist It’s a workhorse for me still, but I’ve come to prefer raw sienna and gold ochre tbh. The latter will be up soon 😊
Quinacridone purple (PV55) is probably my favourite Daniel Smith paint. It's like an even more blue quin violet. Really intense and beautiful. I love mixing it with carbazole violet to get just about any violet hue with high chroma and no granulation. Really handy for botanicals.
@@drew-z6n Thank you for the recommendation! It sounds like one I need to try.
Hi Sonya, I like the Rosa and DS best. Dee
Thanks Dee! Those are great choices.
Saturdays with Sonya! I myself am swatching out ALL my colors in roygbiv order and then in numerical order.. like PR2, PR4, PR12 and so on!
Oh wow, that's quite the project but I like the idea! And I bet it will be so satisfying and useful when it's all done. Hope your swatches are going well!
I love my Rosa palette. Great value for money.
You're absolutely right, they're such great value for money. Thank you!
Hi Sonya, I get confused when trying to arrange my paints too. I tend to do cool yellows followed by warm yellows including yellow ochre. Pinks followed by cool reds and then warm reds. Cool blues flowed by warmer blues and the turquoise colors leading into cool greens followed by warmer greens. Earth colours next cool to warm and I finish off with greys to blacks. Purples are difficult to place, sometimes I think they should follow the blues and other times I think the purples should follow the reds. Decisions Decisions. Dee
It is confusing, I'm glad it's not just me. I've sometimes put earth yellows with the yellows as I use them as any other yellow, anyway. But then sometimes I prefer them with the other earth colours for unknown reasons. I suppose it doesn't really matter as long as it makes sense while you're using the palette. Thanks Dee!
Hi 👋!
Hello! Fancy seeing you here 😁
@sonyaoart :D
I love BOTH Quin Red and Quin Magenta, and use both on the same palette. Daniel Smith is my fave Quin Red and Winsor and Newton my fave Quin Magenta, but I also love the Roman Szmal versions. Sounds like you might need both colours too? ...and there's that space to fill...hehe :D Thanks for the video!
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it! And yes, it does indeed sound like I need both Quin red and Quin magenta :D
fun! Love the colors you chose. I like either the Magenta or Quin Lilac. Pretty fun to watch you arrange the colors as I relate to figuring out preferences (I put my Goethite after my yellow ochre in my palette). Have you tried Cobalt Sea Blue? Let me know if you want me to show you how I fit 40 pans in that a 28 full pan tin taking out the metal rails and some magnets/museum putty. Ha #asha #moreblues
Yes, please show me how to fit 40 pans in the tin. I clearly need more space so I can fit all the blues as well as all the earth colours. Glad you enjoyed this!
Looking forward to Daniel Smith video.
Thank you, that's great to know! The good news is, it's already done: ua-cam.com/video/dueZ1xjyeSQ/v-deo.html. Hope you enjoy!
Not to be a Sienna enabler or anything and Idk how available/afforable it is where you are but M.Graham has a Burnt Sienna that's very nice and has a fairly unique combination of traits and wide value range. I've also been really surprised how much more I like some of the mixes from Transparent Red Oxide than Burnt Sienna, given that BS has always been a favorite. I think it was a Dr. Oto Kano swatch video that sold me on it, from the M. Graham playlist. Thank you for sharing these. 😊
You are very welcome! Thank you for the recommendation. M.Graham isn't exactly affordable, but I'd sure love to try them at some point. I think some Burnt Siennas are more opaque than others, so the more opaque one is, the less cleanly it mixes. That might explain why you prefer the Transparent Red Oxide. I'm sure I watched that video, but I don't remember it, so might have to rewatch. Thanks for mentioning it ☺
Hi Sonya, I too like the Rosa one and yes I’d like to see your big palette. Dee
Okay, I'll have to figure out how best to film the palette. But I'll find a way. Thanks Dee!
I do not like W+Newton's Burnt Sienna. It's very hard to re-wet, for me at least. I have a 1/2 pan of it collecting dust lol. I LOVE Rosa Gallery's PR101, they also have a beautiful Caput Mortuum PR 101 too... it's like velvet lol. My current favorite Burnt Sienna is Van Gogh's PR101 and Rosa's!
Oh yes, I love their Caput Mortuum, too! And I don't know why I forgot to mention that I always put a drop of water into the W&N Burnt Sienna when I want to use it, otherwise it is indeed no fun to paint with. But honestly, when I run out, I'll refill the pan with Rosa. Nicer paint and it's quite a bit cheaper.
I'm sorry everybody, the photo will be delayed until tomorrow. I was out while the light was good enough for a decent picture. Wish me luck for tomorrow!
Good luck! And thank you - it's always interesting to see how different brands approach the same pigments and paints!
@@daotae Thank you! And I'm glad you find it interesting. I do, too :D
Hi Sonya yes I’d like to see the palette as it is and then after your changes. Dee
Thanks for letting me know, Dee! The first edition of the palette will be coming soon.
That Chromium Green Oxide Dark PG17 is calling my name. Love the PB74 too. I also have a major weakness for earth tones, have too many in my cart already and can't make up my mind. 😅 Thank you for sharing!
You are very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! The Chromium Green Oxide Dark is a lovely colour. Well, they all are. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one with a weakness for the earth tones 😃
Feels like a rather botanical selection. Did you swatch it on cellulose paper?
Well, I paint landscapes and animals with these colours, but I guess it would work for botanical sketches, too. The paper is a mixture of cotton and cellulose.
The first three colors you swatched would be perfect for a limited palette 😅 love the colors you picked 😊
@@E4Alabbasy Thank you! I agree, the first three are probably the most important, but I’m not that minimalist 😅
I have a collection of 50 different watercolor pans from Rosa Gallery .They are super pigmented and so easy to rewet . I also love their synthetic Stream watercolor brushes . They keep their point and are exceptional quality and affordable .
@@Soapartisan875 ooh, thank you for the brush recommendation! I haven’t tried them yet but sounds like I should. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Sonya, that’s a great little palette. Dee
Thanks Dee! I hope it'll get me painting outside more this year.

I'm more than happy to spread the word because they are beautiful paints. Thank you for you kind wishes! I wish you the same as well as victory and peace <3
@@sonyaoart ❤ Oh no, it`s more than deserved. Our art youtube community is so undeveloped that I, Ukrainian, found out about Rosa Gallery, Ukrainian brand, from some random review on some random American craft channel ... A very sad situation imho) So again thank you <3

If you like autumn colours then the DS quinacridone burnt scarlet is a must. Youll need to grab it whilst its available as its another discontinued pigment, PR206.
Thank you, I will put it on the list! It's a great suggestion, I have a couple of other PR206 paints and they're beautiful.
The daniel smith sticks are great value! Happy painting with your new palette!
Thank you! I hope the sticks will be back in stock soon.

Happy New Year to you, too! I've seen cascade green, it looks lovely. Thanks Dee!
Sonya! I too have a stupid😅😅😅 amount of PB29's and PB28's! Indian Yellow became my favorite Yellow in 2024, along with PR255 and PR242 for my favorite Reds!
Thanks Laura and Happy New Year! I don't think there's anything wrong with having a lot of your favourites. I love all my PB29s really :D
Great presents you‘ve got - have fun with them! I would love to see the Schmincke Supergranulation colours swatched! 🎨❤️
Thank you! I'll get to swatching the dot card soon.
Hi Sonya, I missed this one for some reason. You’re right about Rosa paints, the quality for the price is great and I love them. Dee
Thanks Dee! They have no right to be this great for the price, but I'm glad they are.
I have been shopping for the perfect Ultramarine and I'm hoping you can tell me about your experience. I've been looking at swatches for so long but still can't tell how well each granulates. I have the dot card for Schmincke's Super Granulators but that is my only experience so far with Schmincke. I really love the granulation in many of the colors containing Ultramarine. I love these convenience mixes but would rather have the flexibility of mixing my own colors, as I'm still building my first collection of watercolors. I'm assuming the one they use is French Ultramarine, I have been told it's their most granulating version. You said that the Roman Szmal would not replace it for you, I would love to know why and what your opinion is of their granulation. The RS French Ultramarine was my 2nd choice. I see online that Old Holland is the most granulating form available but I have seen too many awful swatches from that company for me to risk it (very expensive brand here in US). Would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much for your time and your content. 😊
Thanks for your question and your kind comments! It's a great question. I've got a video in which I swatch all my French Ultramarines, I'll leave a link in another comment in a second in case you'd like to watch it. I don't have another ultramarine that granulates as much as Schmincke French Ultramarine. It turns everything into a super-granulating mix. It's actually my favourite paint, as well and while I like many of the others I have, none of them come close. So if it's granulation you're after, Schmincke's version can't be topped in my opinion. I haven't got any Old Holland, but they are expensive even here. I hope that helps, but feel free to ask for clarification if I've missed anything.
Here's the comparison of all my French Ultramarines: ua-cam.com/video/QYw450YhQc4/v-deo.htmlsi=Ofub8KlwpIXHMAub And here's a post with pictures of the swatches: ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUMsP6JA__LtwWwrWY85L7c3v8OWObwJs
