Maimeri Watercolour Dots from @SketchesnScrubs Happy Mail: I've had these a while & was wary of them
Hello Everybody,
These Maimeri watercolour dots have been waiting to be swatches since May. It took me a while to swatch them for a rather silly reason.
Here's Sketches' Kofi art membership: ko-fi.com/sketchesnscrubs. I think Happy Mail is full at the moment, but there are two other tiers with digital rewards. As much as I love the dot cards, the best thing about it is the community.

More Super-Granulation Dupes (with watercolour paints other than Schmincke)

Hello Everybody, Here's the next row of my Jackman's super-granulating mixing experiment. They don't all turn out exactly the same, but they're close enough I think. I’ve swatched these in a Khadi cotton rag paperback book: store.evansartsupplies.ie/product/19801/Khadi-Cotton-Rag-Paperback-Book/). The watercolour paints are from Jackman's Art Materials: www.jackmansartmaterials.co.uk/collection...
Mixing Quinacridone orange watercolours (PO 47, 48 & 49) with phthalo green: Worth stocking up on?

Hello Everybody, Here's another one from the archives which seems to fit the season. I swatched my Quinacridone orange pigments - Quin Gold (PO49) and Quin Orange(PO47) by Della Magna, and Quin (Burnt) Orange (PO48) by Rembrandt - and mixed them with Rosa Gallery Emerald (PG7). All three of the orange pigments have been discontinued, but you can still find them from small artisanal watercolour ...
Mixing Super Granulation Dupes With Other Watercolour Brands (I'm using Jackman's this time)

Hello Everybody, I think I mention it when I panned the Jackman's tubes that I wanted to see if I can use these to mix Super Granulation colours. So the other day, I finally got out the Schmincke dot card and found the super-granulating watercolours I have the pigments for. The first three went well, if I say so myself. As usual, I'm swatching in a Khadi cotton rag paperback book: store.evansar...

The colors make a lovely palette! I've always been interested in buying their paint 😊
Yes, they really do make a lovely palette. Here's hoping we'll both have some of their paints soon 🤞
The Windsor and Newton Phtalo turquoise is PB 16. At least it was when I bought it. I love it. I have another PR 202, I think it’s from Schmincke. I don’t like it very much, because it has a very big drying shift.
@@martinanelsonartandpsychol6478 Thank you! I have the W&N Aqua (I think that’s its name) and it is quite similar to PB 15:4, but they don’t provide pigment info for it. I haven’t tried their phthalo turquoise, so I don’t know if it’s still the same pigment. I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds PR202 disappointing
Hello! Payne’s Grey of MimariBlu is either PB66, synthetic indigo, or PBk26 Spinel Grey.
@@awatercolourist It does remind me of Spinel Grey quite a bit. I still need to compare them properly though. Thanks for the info! 🖤
Jackson’s lists maimeri Payne’s as ‘Pigment: Indaco sintetico - Vat Blue1 - 73000 - Inorganic.’ (Maimeri use this same pigment for their indigo). Maimeri neutral tint is bk26
@@davejohnson5365 Thank you for the info!
@@davejohnson5365 Glad you mentioned this, I was about to say the same thing 🙂

Hi Sonya, I do like Maimeri and got a nice set from Ken Bromley. It’s an introductory set with 5 colours and each tube is 12ml and costs £23. I really like it apart from the magenta but I don’t really like any magentas. I’m not encouraging you to spend more money as I know that buying watercolour can get out of hand quite easily but might be good for birthday or Christmas. It has a really nice ultramarine in it. Dee
Thank you for the recommendation Dee! That's a really good price, as well. It will go on the wishlist.
I like the fact that - using your own individual pigments - you can have the schmincke as the inspiration/starting point… and then go more r233 or less r233 for example. With the schmincke ready mixed tube you can’t do this. More scope to make more colours.
@@davejohnson5365 One of my favourite things about the Schmincke paints is that they got me thinking about pigments and their different characteristics. I don’t know that it has made me a better painter but I’d like to think so. I’ve certainly learnt a lot about colour mixing. And yes, I think most of the time I prefer making my own mixes these days, based on what the painting needs.
Hi Sonya, yes you’re right. I think you can get close enough by doing your own mixing a lot of the time but sometimes you just want to use the original to save time. Dee
@@doriswhyte1931 I’m glad you agree. I would love to have more of the Schmincke originals, but I enjoy mixing my own versions so I don’t feel like I’m missing out. Thanks Dee!
Sorry for the video being six hours late! I messed up the scheduling.
👋 😊. PO47 looks a lot like PR207. Have you tried swatching them next to each other?
@@awatercolourist Good morning 😊 I haven’t swatched them next to each other yet. But I will as soon as I fill the PR207 gap in the collection. Do you have any recommendations?
@@sonyaoart Schmincke or Roman Szmal. I’m not sure who else has them.
@@awatercolourist thanks! Knowing myself, I’ll probably get both 😂
@@sonyaoart 🤣🤣🤣. I did not expect that 😂.
The DS Quinacridone Deep Gold would have been another good one to include in the comparison here.
@@toriamethyst6068 Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll see if I can get my hands on it!
Didn't expect there to be a difference between the two formulations with regards to the hue of the actual colours, it's definitely visible in the raw sienna. If you have the Schminke and W&N PY159 available, I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between those two.
@@toriamethyst6068 I do indeed have both PY159s! I’ll see if I can get it filmed in the next few days. Thank you!
Hi Sonya, actually I’m going to try this with a vermillion that I have. Dee
Oooh that sounds like a great idea. Would love to hear how it goes. Thanks Dee!
Hi Sonya, these are lovely but I love all greens really. Dee
Glad you like them, Dee!
I have a few Quin Golds... I noticed my Turner's uses the same three that Michael Harding uses.
Ooh that's great to know, seeing as Turner's are quite a bit cheaper. Thanks for sharing this!
@@sonyaoart my pleasure!
Hello! It’s pronounced cotshneel.
Thanks a million!
@@sonyaoart Always welcome!
Hi Sonya, the viridian mix is lovely. Dee
@@doriswhyte1931 Thank you Dee!
Interesting outcome! I did not expect the hue change.
Isn't it? I might need to add a swatch straight from the tubes. Such a pity that I only just thought of this...
@@sonyaoart Better later than never 😊.
Hi Sonya, I’ve read that W&N tubes are not supposed to be squeezed into pans and left to dry but I’ve no idea if that’s true or not. I’ve only ever used the Cotman version but would like to try the professional ones, however the price puts me off a bit. Do you feel that there’s a noticeable difference between Cotman and professional? Dee
Hi Dee, there is a difference between Cotman and the Professional ones, but I don't think it's big enough to justify the price difference. Mind you, I've only tried 25 of them, so I can't speak for the entire range. There are a few colours I might buy again, but I like other professional brands more tbh. And Cotmans are nice enough in my opinion. If you really want to try them, I'd see if you can find a palette in the Amazon Warehouse. I hope that helps, but let me know if you've more questions.
If it matters to you, Winsor & Newton Professional grade all contain oxgall. The Cotman colors do not.
@@michelemarchesani5139 ooh I did not know that Cotman are free of oxgall. Thanks for the info!
Ooh that's a fun dot card!
Yes, it really is! Thank you for watching <3
Thanks for this lovely video. I tend to gravitate more towards glowing quin golds. The ones that I like most from this card are the Michael Harding and the Holbein. The Aussie Red Gold is also lovely.
@@awatercolourist Yes, a quin gold needs to be glowy, doesn’t it? I’m very tempted by both Holbein and MH myself. Thank you!
@@sonyaoart The Schmincke one looks a bit dull in comparison, but I’m not sure whether that’s from the camera.
@@awatercolourist It's not quite as lovely as the other two, but also the camera doesn't quite do it justice.
@@sonyaoart Thanks!
Hi Sonya these are all nice. Aussie red gold is particularly nice to me though, I may get that. Dee

@@diannedupuis2960 Oh I’m glad you think so. Thank you!
Hi Sonya, it’s great to see the Rosa paints doing well. I know pigments are all different but I think it would annoy me if I’d spent money on the Michael Harding ones only to discover that they are only really suitable for a sketch book. So thanks for the test as it’s always nice to see what to avoid. Dee
Thanks Dee! It is great that the Rosa paints have come out so well in this. I'm especially happy about the Green PG8 as it's one of my favourite greens. I am a bit disappointed about the MH Sunset Orange, but maybe that'll teach me to buy a colour because it looks so pretty without looking up what I'm buying. And I spent money so others don't have to.
I actually like the nozzles but I filled my tubes into half pans. I would be interested to know what you think of these paints, I really liked them, I bought some rather than buy extremely expensive greens from DS, and they lived up to my hopes, so I went back and bought more. Mine dried down to be very highly pigmented, some colours cracked very slightly. I have used and enjoyed them and was pleased with the results. Interested to know what others think of these.
I like them. Some of mine shrank down quite a bit and there was some cracking, too. But they all stay in their wells, they rewet easily and they're lovely to paint with. They mix well, too. One of my mixing videos is already up, I've more filmed and yet more planned. My biggest problem with them was that even though it said tax included on the website, I did have to pay VAT when they arrived in Ireland. So they were not as affordable for me as I thought. There is nothing wrong with the paints themselves as far as I can tell.
@@sonyaoart Thanks, I think they are a very nice line of paints, sad to hear they were not such a good deal for you because of VAT. They regularly have sales and they represent a considerable saving to me over many other brands. I am not stuck on honey based paint so like these a lot too.
@@lindyashford7744 Yes, I totally agree, they are a lovely line of paints. I'm glad you're enjoying yours!
Lightfast tested is fascinating and informative. It’s been one of the reasons I’ve acquired a pallete & several pans of the Rosa Gallery paints. They seem to be the ones (I’ve seen in other light fast videos) that have the least fugitive results. I have the larger mono-pigment set and a few pans to round out the colours I like to paint with.
Thank you, I'm glad you found this informative. I think you can't really go wrong with Rosa, and I'm glad that only the reds I thought would change have shown any signs of change. I think it's in part because Rosa doesn't have quite as big a selection as other brands, and they've mostly chosen pigments that don't fade. And apart from that they're just lovely paints. Thanks again!
Your paintings turned out great. Dee
@@doriswhyte1931 Thank you Dee!
Had a little word with yourself, eh?? 😅 No worries.... I do that ALL THE TIME. So I must have Daniel Smith's PB29 in all my palettes... and Da Vinci's Colbalt Blue Deep. Ohhh you'll love it. It is deeper than WN PB74 and granulates beautifully!
@@Lauraisabelgonzalezart I did because it was necessary 😂. Da Vinci is, unfortunately, not available over here and the shipping from the U.S. is outrageous. But it sounds like I’d love it… maybe on day. Thank you Laura ❤️

Hey everybody, here's the photo of the swatch card: ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMw1dm0k72Fz4CXKcfRgNDnPr5qQxCXVW
The PR233 pigment, Pinkcolour, comes in a light and dark version. W&N and RS both use the delicate, light pink. The darker pinks are gorgeous, too, and a quality photo will highlight the differences. TFS 😍
Thank you! I thought there must be a reason why the RS version looks so different. They are all beautiful and I can't wait to explore the differences.
Hi Sonya, thanks for swatching these. I have the Roman Szmal one and wanted to try another brand and your selection is really nice. I like the Jackman’s but it looks like it’s not far away from a caput mortem which I also really like. Dee
You're right, the Jackman's is quite close to some of my caput mortuums. Might be another comparison I need to make. The RS version is lovely, I'm looking forward to painting with it more. Glad you found the comparison useful!
I like the Roman Szmal Potter's Pink a lot. I think I'm the only Artist who hasn't purchased any Roman Szmal paints and whenever I see someone's video regarding them, I want them even more lol. Okay so I do also have Renesans Polska's Potter's Pink and it's👎.... it's horrible imo. But I did treat myself to a 5ml tube of Winsor+Newton's version and it's more Pink leaning. Very lovely, and granulates beautifully!
The W&N version is my favorite. 😊
Thanks for sharing your experiences with Potter's Pink. The W&N version is on my wish list, so I'm glad to know it's a good one.
Sonyaaaaa, you forgot the community tab swatch picture 🤭
Thank you for the reminder my dear!
Hi Sonya, these actually look very nice but I can see the struggle with some of the tubes. The nozzle on the small tubes looks quite narrow so I suppose that adds to the difficulty. I like the layout of the palette, I might get one like that. Dee
@@doriswhyte1931 Yes, those nozzles really didn’t help. If I buy more, it’ll be the 14ml tubes. I really like the palette, I’m already considering buying another one. Thanks Dee!

Hi Sonya, thanks for the video. Some really nice colours there but every time I think about ordering some I can’t bring myself to do it when I see the price😂. I always end up going back to see if Rosa or Roman Szmal have the same thing and if they do, I go with them. I’d like to see a comparison of your potters pinks when you have time to do it as I prefer a pinker one to the browner ones. I got the Brusho pots that I ordered so tonight’s the night, just hope I don’t make too much of a mess with them. Dee
They are really rather pricey, aren't they? I haven't bought any more since last summer. I will do a Potter's Pink comparison soon, promise! Good luck with the Brusho and not making a big mess, I hope you have fun Dee!
The PR233 looks rather brownish. Is this just my screen? The magenta could also be a Quin Viol. (PV19), but again, could just be my screen. Have you ever tried PB74 from Schminke? I love it. 😊
I've just posted a photo of the swatches in the community tab, that should give you a better idea what the colours look like. But the Potter's Pink is a bit on the brown side. @@sonyaoart same! lol. I just re-discovered it and realized how much I like it. Actually it was an urban sketcher, who I follow, who uses it as his warm blue in a travel-pallet of only 10 colors.
