Lobito Corridor: The Railway That Brought President Biden to Africa
#africa #railway #angola #drc #zambia #megaprojects #africanews #africanews #joebiden #tchisekedi #hichilema
President Joe Biden's visit to Angola in December 2024 was historic, marking the first time a sitting US president has visited the country. The trip focused on the Lobito Corridor, a major infrastructure project to link Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia through a railway network. The project is crucial to linking Africa's resource-rich Copperbelt to the Atlantic Ocean, facilitating the export of minerals such as copper, lithium and cobalt.
During his visit, Biden pledged an additional $600 million for the Lobito Corridor, underscoring the US commitment to increasing trade and investment in Africa. This funding is expected to promote regional connectivity, economic growth, and sustainable development in the participating countries.
Biden's visit underscores the importance of US-Africa relations and the potential benefits of the Lobito Corridor for regional development and global trade.

The $60 billion price tag for Nigeria's Standard Gauge Railway comes from the 2002 "25-Year Rail Modernization Master Plan." This comprehensive plan included the construction of new standard gauge railways, the rehabilitation of existing lines, and the development of inter-state connections to link every state capital. By replacing the 3,505 km narrow gauge and constructing around 3,500 km of new standard gauge railway, the total length would be approximately 7,000 km. Given this extensive network, the $60 billion estimate seemed reasonable at the time. However, comparing this to the 2,102 km Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway, it's clear that $60 billion is a high estimate for 7,000 km. A more realistic cost might be in the range of $30-40 billion Message Copilot

I believe it is important to be polite and use appropriate language. While it may have been the case during colonial and postcolonial times, African leaders and policymakers are currently aware of the challenges and tasks that need to be done to develop their own people. Therefore, I would like to kindly request that you refrain from using vulgar and disrespectful language.

$64 billion is little money to make from 1.6 billion barrels and since the 64 billion is being shared between Uganda and Tanzania, this makes it even more sad. This is pure theft. Uganda has 6 billion barrels of established oil deposits from less than 20% of explored land for oil. So you can expect the total deposits to increase in the near future given the ongoing exploration. Plus the pipeline is also expected to offtake oil from eastern DRC where significant oil deposits exist, as well as oil from South Sudan.
