This is very well shot (and has even been transferred at the correct speed). The cameraman knows how to hold the camera; to pan and zoom correctly too. Colour cine film wasn't cheap in 1963 and if you had any aptitude you soon learned how to use it properly. Scenery can be boring, but the composition of each scene is almost instinctive. Whoever filmed it knew how to compose their shots. When it comes to the Waverley footage, the cameraman knew that people like looking at themselves, and could unselfconsciously film those around because they all knew each other. It became as much about the scenery as the people, and the clothes now I suppose too.

i was born in 1970 and Stonehouse was my hometown but some of this i don't recognise. i lived by the train station.

Great to see any old footage from Scotland and especially from EK since I've lived here for 40 years.

I' m from Larkhall but my Granny lived in Stonehouse. I was so scared to go on that chute. The height of it terrified me. I liked the little boating pond though. My brother married a Stonehouse girl and was married in St Ninian's. Still members there.

We used to jump off the 54 bus just where the cameraman was. Some drivers would accelerate up the hill just to make it more 'interesting' for us. The town library was a few yards up Todshill Street from there, next to Corney's Close, although the name plate said 'Gas Close' back then. A lot of folk think I'm havering when I say there was a library there. I can just make out the old jail in the background, just in front of where the Telecom building is today. I remember playing in it. The cells were in the basement, and there were trapdoors upstairs. Being imaginative youngsters, we used to think that the trapdoors were used for hanging the prisoners, but they were probably used for delivering and retrieving food and slop buckets from the cells. A boy in my street set fire to it.
