Overall, I quite agree w/jeff oliva: hers was as Toscanini remarked, 'we are given such a voice once in a century!' For nit-pickers to grind on 'imperfections' they hear or see is a kind of insanity, as they'd rather have what? A robotic purity? Once devoid of humanity's flaws, the existence of which enable us to see the Greater View, what is left but mindless sterility? At nearly 74, I say that if one comprehends this aria in the totality of the opera's story, it is difficult not to weep at the depth of her performance. Can we say that about every one of the others?
Focusing on technique instead of the feeling and artistry is for opera snobs. Maria was a pure artistic vessel. So moving, incomparable, and like Jimi Hendrix on guitar, we'll never see or hear anyone like them again. The art and the artist become one expressive entity.
Brava Maria Brava! Maria is the only true singing actress! Many have tried and failed! Like Joan Sutherland. The high notes, trills, coloratura etc doesn't really help much if you don't UNDERSTAND what you are singing. Oh yes, I'm sure Mrs Sutherland understood her role all right -she had her husband to guide her! But did she really speak Italian like Maria? No? She tried her best and failed. Vocally, I think Montserrat Caballe does this better than Joan. But Mrs Caballe is like a singing statue compared to Maria! Oh, Maria Callas, please come back! Than you Mr de Zabelata for this video! Thank you very much! Best Wishes Mr Jyrki Kaarlola Lohja Finland
Angalafan: What French "baratin" (hogwash, twaddle). Totally empty, making phrases instead of saying concrete comments on the voice, on the singer, the composer, the aria itself, etc., the performance, of any comparison with others. How can the French take this verbiage for thinking? They learn this foggy style in school, and they think that's the way to sound smart and profound, when in fact it is all absurd nonsense. It's not even worth translating, as it is a pure time waster.
I am very impressed with the heartfelt comments of Madame Callas` fans...and I certainly am filled with awe at Madame Callas` voice and INTENSITY. I am , of course, a die hard "fan" of another beloved Soprano....but I rank Madame Callas in my top three sharing the top spot with Flagstad, and Nilsson, ...but really....I love Callas too
I completely agree with you: the '55 performance at la Scala is maybe the greatest Norma of the 20th century (all in all, though as you say there are moments in other Normas which are unforgettable). I think the '55 RAI is astounding only from the second act onward.
Which Norma? The Mexico 1950? The Covent Garden '52? The EMI '54? The RAI '55? The Scala '55? The EMI '60? The Paris '64/5? They're each quite different. I'd recommend the Scala '55. If you bought any of the ones from the '60s, then those are hardly representative, even though they have certain poignant moments, and you cannot peg the true worth of Callas's Norma from any of those '60s Normas, in my view. To do that fairly, it would have to be the Scala '55 or earlier.
Oh, I would say there were more than just Pasta and Malibran in the 19th century -- although they are certainly important ones! Certainly, Colbran, who created the Rossini Armida, Ronzi, who created the Devereux Elisabetta (a terrifying part) and Viardot, who made a big splash in a number of such roles, should be added. Bridging the 19th-20th centuries, Litvinne is the real thing too. In the 20th century, Gencer and Callas are, I would guess, the closest to those Assolutas of the 19th.
I don't find this and the January 2 that similar. There's a cautiousness and a less generous use of vocal color on January 2. The top here may not be as secure as the Scala '55(!), but she does produce here, at around 6:50, a shapely high B in the reprise (the "Tempra, o Diva"). That kind of control isn't heard on January 2. Even though the high B in the first statement here isn't as perfect, the overall reading is still Callas's last authoritative "Casta Diva". How lucky it's on film!
Cursed Onassis
In her prime there was no one to touch Maria Callas. Few since.
her bel canto is flawless. Imagine thinking she wasn't a technical wonder, must be a sad life.

The singing may be faultless, but how do you watch a video that is so badly out of sync?
This is an angel in the earth... That's it...
Callas forever! There will no other.
