Longboat isn't bad compared to St Pete Beach, Manasota Key, etc. I can't feel bad for those who chose to live on barrier islands in a state that gets hurricanes. These people will rebuild and it will happen again and again.

My grandfather was the first realtor on longboat key. My name is the last one on the pioneer family registry. There was nothing much on the island back in the day. The old pre town center police and tiwn managers offices were our downstairs. Two gulf cottages, two bay cottages as a kid in the 1950s and 1960s it was my paradise. I still have dreams about how it was. The way the woods sounded in the morning.

Building codes in Florida need to be updated to require living areas be elevated at least 15 to 20 feet above sea level on pears and for structures to be able to withstand both a hundred year storm surge event and a Category 5 wind field.

Barrier islands should be public playgrounds with palmetto scrub and beaches. They are very dynamic natural systems, in this case comprised of sand from the Everglades.

This looks nothing like it did when My GG Grandaddy Thomas Mann and His brother James Mann Homesteaded Long boat Key folks, yep people have always lived on the water but People have NOT always been so stupid to invest so much there and then bitch about losing it when they had to know it could and would happen. It sucks but I have no pity for anyone just cuz they lost stuff in an event like this. He lived in a shack he could have rebuilt in a days time and it had Palm fronds for a roof folks, IYKYK.

The future… Everything that you own is kept 15 feet up on the first floor of the resident built on pillars…Everything else on the ground is natural… Sand, sand, and more sand…

Longboat Key always stood out to me because of it's grocery store, Publix. You could pretty much live a car free life biking or walking for groceries, yet living by a relaxed beach. It wasn't always so expensive.

I am curious how the insurances finance this destruction. Folks living in those mansions with beach front properties can afford rebuild and are probably fully insured. We go frequently to Naples, Clearwater Beach, Sanibel and Sarasota. These homes are very expensive. We should not worry too much for these folks.

Yeah sorry to say, but if you didn't have flood insurance you're shit out of luck. Don't count on FEMA, they will only help with immediate needs such as shelter and food allowance etc, not to help you rebuild your house, that's on you. FEMA also knows that if you have a property anywhere along the entire coast that got hit, that you're probably pretty well off. Sure, there will be many who lost a lot but didn't own a beach property. Still, very sad, a lot of people's fortunes are lost.

My grandmother and then my mother lived on Anna Maria since the 40’s. Right next to the barrier of sea oats next to the beach. After my mother died a few years ago, we sold up. Sad, but then I knew it would be just a matter of time before the island would be under water.
