In the early stages of one’s journey into the collective unconscious, one often meets the Mother Archetype. The Mother promises safety, security, and peace, but, as all archetypes have a dual nature, she can also appear as a symbol of terror. How are we to understand the Mother Archetype? What significance does it play in our own psychology? And most importantly, how can we integrate it to our ...

I think the faes are more similar to angels than demons. Unlike demons, fairies don’t need to possess people to do things. In old folklore they can and do have children with each other and probably humans. You never read about demons abducting humans because they’re unable to (unless possessing). Fairies don’t need to posses to do that.

Hello Jeremy and thanks for your video efforts :-). You've mentioned in a video that archetypes and myths can be interpreted in several approaches, but IMO we basically only have THREE LEVELS, namely the personal, the social and the cosmological one. As you here are dealing with the Mother Goddess Archetype, you have the basic and positive interpretation and explanation very nicely, but something is distorted when referring to "a shadow side" of the Mother Goddess archetype., but I understand the Jungian “shadow approach” of it. The Mother Goddess is an universal and cosmological archetype which has specific cosmological connections, representing both the Mother Earth AND the Galactic Mother. The Mother Earth gives itself, but the mythical archetypical Galactic Mother naturally shall be located to the cosmological conditions of the Milky Way Galaxy and here we arrive to the "dark-side-interpretation of the Mother Goddess". As the Earth forms everything terrestrial, the Galactic Mother forms everything in the Milky Way, and the galactic center of creation is located "in the underworld" i.e., on the Earth’ southern hemisphere but up in the night sky, in the direction of the Sagittarius constellation. This archetype belongs naturally to the nocturnal sky scenario, but this fact is scholarly misinterpreted to constitute a personified dualistic malign aspect of this prime goddess, which is neither natural nor logical. When this Galactic Mother Goddess archetype is mythically and ancestrally connected with Snakes, Serpents, and Dragons and other strong and fierce and deadly animals, it relates to the Milky Way mythology and its whitish encircling band observed all around the Earth. This story is told in many cultures and very precisely in the Norse Mythology with the Midgaard Serpent Jörmungandr, encircling the entire Midgaard where humans live, the Earth. The mythical “life and death” connection to the Galactic Mother Goddess describes both the cyclical process of life, but especially also the creation in the Milky Way where the Milky Way center mythologically is dubbed “The Galactic Mother Womb”, which of course is connected to huge powers of creation. So, the archetypical Galactic Mother Goddess has no malign attributes at all 😊 Such an alienation only derives from scholarly absence of mytho-cosmological understanding. BTW: I´m also mailing this comment for your records, and I´m available for taking questions into my take on this or other relevant matters. Thanks again and Best Wishes Ivar Nielsen Comparative Mythologist & Natural Philosopher Denmark

Hi Ivar, thank you for the very in depth comment! I like your explanation of Earth and Galactic/Cosmological Mother. The archetypes can be tricky to explain. When I say positive/negative mother I don't mean good/evil. Rather, the positive and negative aspects represent two opposite points in the cycle of life and death. One must engage with both aspects to have true understanding of the archetype in its totality. I am curious about this Earth vs Galactic mother archetype as you put it. If you could send some resources on where this is outlined that would be much appreciated. BTW, the email I had listed in my profile was out of date. I've since updated it. Hello Jeremy and thanks for your reply and the updated mail address. First: I have the scholarly “dark Galactic Mother interpretation” to derive from the astronomical fact that this galactic mytheme simply concerns a nocturnal physical observation on the Earth southern hemisphere. The Earth Mother simply mirrors the Galactic Mother who is directly connected to the numerous cultural Stories of Creation which again is directly linked to the center in the Milky Way and the formation of stars and planets, and not to a creation of the entire Universe - which was/is eternal in nature for our ancestors. In this sense, I have the cultural Stories of Creation to describe the very basic principles of creation, beginning with the pre-conditions of unordered (chaotic) cosmic clouds in the void, (rivers in mythology) and the principal explanation of gases and molecules being electromagnetically attracted into a cosmic whirl, in which center a “fiery light” is lit, “Atum-Ra” in Egyptian mythology. In this center, everything in the coming Milky Way is sorted out in gaseous and firmer rotating spheres which become stars and planets; hence our Sun and Earth simply mirrors this cosmic formation in the Milky Way - which again mirrors other galactic formations in the Cosmic Web. Jeremy, I got the Galactic Mother Goddess inspiration by an out-of-body experience of this wonderful archetype back in 1979 and you can search my “native-science MilkyWay.MotherGoddess” and look at my initial works. Hope to hear from you in this matter too 😊 I´m testing your new mailaddress by mailing this reply. Best Wishes Ivar

Thank you for your video on the mother archetype. It's by far one of the rarest archetypes to find information on UA-cam, most channels seem to go for either the fundamental ones like shadow and anima/animus, or the more, perhaps, evocative ones like tricksters or wizards. Your video was brought to my frontpage by the algorithm, hopefully to others too so it can catch some wind behind it. I for one would certainly enjoy more content on Jung's less covered archetypes. I have also constructive something because it's not even criticism: Maybe you introduced collective unconscious the way you did to maintain attention by creating objection, but the "shared library accessible to everyone" plays into the confirmation bias of those who have maybe heard of Jung, although not in detail, and are predisposed to labeling Jung's theories as unprovable, irrational folly. But if it is introduced as a tendency to figure out various symbolic patterns in a strikingly similar manner across cultures around the globe, it's much more acceptable to the open-minded, scientifically inclined skeptic. At least I consider it important to emphasis that archetypal images are not rigid structures that reside in the same form in every psyche. Anyway, subscribed. 👍

Thank you so much for your comment! Glad you enjoyed the video. I'll be sure to keep digging through Jung's writings for any lesser known archetypes. The archetypes can definitely be tricky to describe. Various interpretations range from the physical (i.e. common symbolic patterns across cultures as you mentioned) to the metaphysical (i.e. a literal realm/plane that we can visit through dreams and visions).

Thanks for this interesting video. I agree in the Jungian take on personal development connecting “female and male” qualities leading to a genuine initiation through experiencing cosmic archetypes, though I have Jung´s definitions of genuine archetypes to need specific cosmological connections. I´ve had my fair shares of visions back in the 1980-es. Once I got a text in a lucid dream saying: “The answer will come from the library”. I didn´t know what that was about, but a couple of weeks after, I visited my library as usual for lending some books and music, and on my way out, I noticed a building pillar with and advertising. It showed up to be an advertising of a Star Atlas showing the stars and Milky Way contours on both of the Earth´s hemispheres, and I immediately got a flow of inspirations connected to my research of ancient Rock Arts and its symbolism, and this has developed ever since by studying Comparative Mythology with my focus on the numerous cultural Stories of Creation. It turned out that the very contours of the Milky Way on both hemispheres participates as genuine archetypes in the numerous cultural Stories of Creation, having a female looking figure on the southern hemisphere, and a male looking figure on the northern hemisphere - and mythically both connected to the central LIGHT of the Milky Way in the direction of the Sagittarius Constellation on the southern hemisphere. With reference to your own reference to the “Solar Phallus Man”, I don´t think any humans naturally can imagine our Sun having a phallos, but this imagery comes naturally by observing the nocturnal white contours of the Milky Way on the northern hemisphere, so I´ll say the person in question had a Milky Way vision and not a solar one. BTW: Those who´re having archetypical visions, are not the factual producers of myths, but the receivers of outside coming collective cosmic information. And the interpretation, if well received, should logically be very similar for all receivers, as “collective cosmic information” deal with the fact that we all live on the same planet Earth, in the same Solar system, in the same Milky Way galaxy and in the same local part of the observable Universe. This is IMO simply constitutes our common archetypical, collective, and cosmic Story of Creation in all cultures. This is also the very purpose of experiencing the cyclical archetypes of “where we came from and where we go to" in the eternal circuit of life and death. Unfortunately, UA-cam doesn´t like linking, even the most relevant ones, but I can be contacted as Ivar Nielsen on Facebook Messenger for further details, illustrations and conversations. Just refer to this video. Merry Christmas and Winter Solstice.

Regarding the myth of Zeus consuming Metis. One of the mysteries in Greek mythology is the true name of Athena. We know from archaeology that the goddess was named after the city of Athens which was later mythologized with the city being named after the goddess. Mycenean inscriptions refer to her as "the Lady of Athens". So it is likely that Athena was her epithet and not her actual name. So what was her real name? Considering that Athena is nearly identical in form and function with her mother Metis, it may be that Zeus consuming Metis and later "giving birth" to Athena from his forehead describes the transformation of Metis into Athena via Zeus.

Gregg Braden calls the Collective Unconscious "The Field." and it is also referred to as the Akashic Library by many. Thoughts are energy and tangible even though we can't see them. I think the mind is a device akin to a walkie-talkie. It sends messages (energy) and receives messages (energy, sound, sight , smell, etc). It seems to me that Jung says unconscious but describes one's spirit /intuition.

Very insightful comment, thank you! I've seen various interpretations of the Collective Unconscious, some see it more as a physical thing, a common way that our minds have evolved to communicate with us through symbols. Others (like Braden) see it more metaphysically, as an actual place beyond the physical realm (e.g. Akashic Records) that we can tap into with spirit, intuition, psychic abilities, etc.

Jung was undoubtedly a genius, but he does what most such people do. A climate scientist is going to see myths as stories about climate. A botanist is going to see everything in myth relates to trees. A poet will see myth as poetry , the kind he knows and not the kind the ancients knew. When we start to interpret everything scientifically we fail in many categories, such as history. Yes archeology is a useful science, but it's not the only way. We run the danger of being like a Christian scientist using science to try and explain our religion, the two being completely incapable of relating to each other. Want to see a scholar cry, tell him he's doing nothing more than a Christian Scientist. And of course he won't reflect on whether he is or not but merely attack the person bringing up the point. Psychology is not a science. If humans were all rational and consistent, maybe we could pretend so, but we aren't.

    • @jbadams.author
      @jbadams.author 3 місяці тому

Yes, there's nothing wrong with interpreting myth through various lenses (psychological, environmental, archaeological, etc). It's fine if every scientist/expert interprets things through their own lens, as the amalgamation of all these interpretations enriches the understanding of the myths for the next generation.

"This might be good enough for the ancient..." That is an absurd statement. He is making that ciomment based on nothing but speculation. If he had read enough about mythology he would know they weren't trying to explain natural phenomenon. Next, what, is he going to tell us Dionysus was the god of alcoholic inebriation? He, Ha, love these "experts."

    • @jbadams.author

By this statement, I meant that we as modern people can have a tendency to dismiss ancient myths as being primitive explanations made by primitive people, not that that was how the ancients understood myths themselves. Thank you very much! Yes, everything is connected in my experience. The stories of the past still ring true today and they are always trying to impart wisdom and inspiration, sometimes even warnings. Glad you enjoyed the video! I'm planning to go deeper into the archetypes, what they symbolize, how they can be useful to us etc. And definitely I want to talk about stone circles, druids, runes, and other topics in ancient history at some point. Please let me know if you have a specific topic you want me to cover!

Absolutely. everything you mentioned as topics are all great future subjects..I'm also personally fascinated with the eschatological similarities found in many religions..the idea of Nature will be renewed holly through fire...(igne natura renovatur Integra)..when you said "sometimes it's even a warning".I think that's the code to it all..a predicble pattern of cosmic impacts hitting the earth..and resetting civilisation..and it's all a precious attempt to relay that knowledge to the generations to come..I even believe all the religion's that have a return of God origin story..is not God but a cyclic pattern of impacts..the reason why all the (Gods) are all simily prophesized to return with fire and desruction...Christianity,Judaism,Islam,Zoroastrianism,mithraic.the.nordic oden etc etc..Gods coming back to destroy with fire...at apparent regular predictable intervals..so yes I think you got it spot on with..sometimes it's a warning..and all the hidden sacred geometry in ALL of the worlds great stone temple's are a attempt to give us the..Where and When the meteorite/s will impact..eg..go here for safety..don't be here, for survival,so to not loose the import knowledge of our forgotten past..or were doomed to repeat same mistakes. .would love to hear what you think about it my friend..is it the return of a God or all about the return of space rock cycle..

And last point.i promise.lol.have you discovered the ancient time code stamped in all mythology and geometry globally..impact cycle key date and timescales..I've found continual references to a 26000 year great cycle and keep dividing it in halves to 13000 years.6500 years and 3250 years..and those dates seem to all account for nearly all the recorded impact events in our history..dates also agreed with by geologists...eg a 52000 year old giant crater in a desert we visit today is just 2 cycles of the 26000 year code..or 12500 years ago was sudden ending of our ice age..6500 years ago we have global flood story myths beginning . and 3250 years ago the bible records a impact event as the story of Lot and his wife escaping Sodom...the time lines always seem to uncannily fit..into the 26000 year scale divided up..seems to be way beyond coincidence...i hope you find it fascinating too..

Very interesting stuff. The point you make about cycles that get shorter and shorter remind me of the four Yugas in Hindu cosmology: Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali. Each cycle gets shorter and shorter, I think the final (which Hinduism states we are currently in) is supposed to be 3000 - 5000 years. A great cataclysm is meant to occur at the end of Kali Yuga, which will then reset everything and restore a new Satya Yuga. So yes, it's very similar to what we see in the Bible and other mythologies. We know that there are extinction/cataclysmic events that have happened in the history of the earth, one of the most recent being the ice age that ended roughly 10,000 years ago. I don't think it's impossible for there to have been civilizations before then. Even ancient cities like Pompeii, Ephesus, were completely buried not too long ago and have only been excavated recently (relatively speaking). There are definitely lots of secrets buried beneath our feet waiting to be discovered.

You reminded me of a video I watched a while ago from Kurzgesagt, where they talk about how it's possible that civilization could have existed on earth before us. It's exceedingly rare that we could ever find archaeological evidence because the passage of time would eventually erode tools, artifacts, cities, etc. And given our current understanding of the world, we might not even be able to distinguish the fossilized remains of an ancient civilization from nature. You can check it out if interested. ua-cam.com/video/KRvv0QdruMQ/v-deo.html

I know southern germans have some celtic ancestors, there is not much information on how the germanic tribes came from the north to settle middle and south germany replacing many celtic tribes in that region. I would watch a video about that topic if you know anything about it. I doubt this went peacefully with these hallstatt celts and early germanics encountering each other, i think suebi, allemani and such inhabit regions that where once land of the celts.

This is a really great idea for a video. I'm sure there is a lot of information waiting to be uncovered. I will definitely do some research and talk about this in a later video. Thank you for the awesome suggestion!
