Very calming sighting of 3 white rhinos relaxing at the waterhole. Although not being super active, it remains a privilege to watch these animals still roam free. I think the calf gave the ladies a bit of a fright when he was running around😝
So how can you tell if it is a female or male white rhino? First of all, size. The males are significantly bigger than the females. They weigh up to 2300 kgs while the females get up to 1700 kgs approximately. Secondly, their social structure. You wont see a dominant male so close to a female 9/10 times. The females want to keep him slightly away since his intent is mating only. Often you can hear the vocalisation of the female when the male comes to close. It is like a high pitched hissing noise. Thirdly, the most obvious one. The females have 2 mammary glands in their grown which is absent with the male. It is actually quite clear and if you put all 3 together, you will be quickly able to tell if it is a male or female.
