My Lightroom Classic Workflow
A friend asked to see my LR workflow--so I've taken a raw photo through my editing process to produce this video. It reflects my artistic choices that might differ from yours, but it gives you an idea of my thought process.

Llano Seco Oct 3 - Water is finally coming into the fields . . .
Переглядів 612 місяці тому
I arrived in the dark and set up my tripod on the path to the back platform. I could hear but not see cranes in the distance. I could barely make out a small pond forming near the bend in the path. As the sun rose, the cranes started landing in the field near the pond directly in front of me. The sounds and scene fills me with joy. What can I say I love Sandhill Cranes!
Beavers on Big Chico Creek
Переглядів 575 місяців тому
I pushed off in my kayak just at sunrise, hoping to encounter a beaver and sure enough, within a few minutes, there he was, chomping away on some vegetation. Apparently, we were traveling in the same direction, so I managed to catch him stopping to eat twice and finally greeting a kit. Of course he gave me several beaver slaps for being in his way!

I spent a morning photographing these amazing creatures who can fly and also swim under water. There were very busy trying to keep their 3 offspring fed. A valiant effort!
Birds of California Park

When I meet folks on the path around the lakes, they sometimes ask me to identify a bird. Here is a little movie that identifies the birds I've seen so far in my ramblings, during February and March
Young Eagle learns a life lesson

And I forgot to shoot video! The young Eagle caused a great fly-up of ducks, but one poor Pintail didn't quite make it. Taken in December at Llano Seco Refuge near Chico CA

Sandhill Crane Fly-out at Llano Seco Refuge

Sandhill Cranes like to gather in large groups at night to stand in the recently flooded fields near the back platform safety in numbers, no doubt. If you walk out there before light, you can watch them get more and more lively as dawn approaches. Then, at or around first light, they tend to take off in family groups and fly to the rice fields to feed. A wonderful sight.
Male Ritual Combat: Rattlesnakes in Upper Bidwell Park, Chico CA
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Рік тому
Kathy Adams took a walk near the golf course and came upon this scene. Best of all, she kept her wits about her and captured a full 5 minutes as they writhed across the road. According the my friend Mike Skram: "This is actually an example of (rarely witnessed) male vs male ritual combat (aka rutting behavior)...there is likely a triggering female nearby... A very lucky encounter!"
White-lined Sphinx Moth (Hummingbird Moth) [OM-1 FHD 240/60p]
Переглядів 85Рік тому
I didn't intend to make a meditative video, but if you're looking for a little calm oasis in your day, take a look. We sat by a creek in Lassen Park yesterday and watched these little moths for over an hour. White-lined Sphinx moths, also known as Hummingbird moths, are fast flyers and hover over flowers much like hummingbirds. They have the world's longest tongues for reaching deep into tubula...
Blessed by a Bird

My dear friend and intrepid bird finder, Suji, interviewed me just seconds after I caught the first flight of a Northern Pygmy Owlet on video. The tiny thing fluttered on my head before landing! I was, as they say, speechless!
Northern Pygmy Owlet fledging
Переглядів 142Рік тому
It was a banner day for both of us! I was lucky enough to be there to witness and catch on video this young Pygmy Owlet as he set forth. He and his siblings had been fed in their nest hole after hatching for quite a while. For 9 days, the owlets had taken turns peeking out at the world. Finally!
Tempting chicks from nest unsuccessfully
Переглядів 32Рік тому
It's been 4 days since my last Northern Pygmy Owl video report and the chicks are STILL in the hole. 7 days since the first owlet bobbling head appeared. No amount of coaxing with fat mice and shiny lizards can entice them out into this crazy world, apparently. After all of those deliveries of small birds, lizards, and mice, one can only imagine the disgusting mess they're sitting in. Oh well, ...

Horrible this looks like would damage your side driver side
My 2012 Prius still looks good! It's driver side is aging better than its driver. LOL!
You’re inspiring me. ❤
I'm happy to hear that! Keep paddling . . .
So wonderful. Every year I tell myself I need to get to Llano Seco in October, and once again I have a conflict and can't make it this year. I love the cranes, too! Thanks for bringing me there virtually.
Thanks Joan - for that great video -- I gotta get down there before they eat all the grasshoppers!
Pretty good vid Joan. The audio was hard to stomach. did u have a mic right up to your lips??
Sorry. Cheap headset. Quick vid for a friend. 😊
@@joanrob1 no need to be sorry. It was still helpful for me. Thank you!!
LOVE IT! I too have been looking for a way to get my kayak on my roof. The use of the stands is a great idea IF the stands are the same height as the hullivator arms. I am assuming that changes with the height of the vehicle. Do the stands adjust in height?
Wonderfull pics. From kayak, even more magnifiqe.
What a delightful series of encounters!
THANK YOU ❤❤❤ I was getting so frustrated not being able to lift my 75pound kayak high enough for the power assist to kick in! You saved my summer! 😊
Well done on handling this heavy boat by yourself at 80! Much kudos. 70 lb & only 11 feet long, Yikes! The problem is manufacturers making kayaks way too heavy. Back in the early 70s, I got into slalom kayaking for high school sport. This is not high level competition, we just used a simple cheap fiberglass construction & made our boats during the summer holidays from materials and molds supplied through the local canoe club. I made 2 boats a few years apart. In those days, the boats were 13 ft long & 2 feet wide. The 1st boat weighed 40lb, but with the 2nd boat I was more savvy about weight & was more careful not to over wet out the layup. That boat weighed 28 lb, it was a more modern design of that time (Letterman Olymp) & my favorite boat. I should point out that serious competition boats of that time were made of carbon fiber & Kevelar & they weighed less than half this weight. So, from my perspective an 11 foot 70 lb kayak is just ridiculously overweight. It's been pretty much par for the course these since the advent of PE Kayaks though. You can still buy fiberglass and not thermo-form kayaks, both of which kayaks which are still much lighter weight than the roto-moldered PU kayaks like that Hobie one. The less it weighs, the less water you gave to push through when paddling, so every aspect of kayaking becomes easier the lighter weight the boat is. Some people still make skin on frame kayaks which are the lightest weight of all constructions & with modern materials can still be reasonably robust. People used to make kayaks in their garages & it is still possible to do that & it doesn't take much skill before you begin either. learn as you go. However, the lighter the boat is, the less robust, so just take a little care & don't seal launch off cliffs, or paddle over waterfalls or oyster beds etc. Just be a bit sensible & reasonable about how you treat the boat & it will reward you.
Well done! thanks for making this video, I have now ordered my own set and there is nothing stopping me in the future. You are an inspiration!
Thanks Henrik! Glad you found it useful!
Love it!
Thanks, Suji!!!
Very sweet. Oh what big mouths those tiny chicks have :)
You are gem. I hope you are still kayaking x
I plan to keep on going -- as long as possible! Now if it would just stop raining. 🙂
@@joanrob1 You are amazing!! X
Wow - you’re incredible Joan! I hope to be paddling in my 70s and I’m only 58. Truly inspirational 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Trick is to keep moving--walk, run, jump, paddle. Being able to get out into nature is a great motivator!
Totally agree! are you still paddling?@@joanrob1
Oh yes! Whenever the weather permits. I turn 87 in Apr.😊
Many more years of paddling to you Joan!@@joanrob1
Actually, I'm glad I was spared the action in motion. Your many pics captured the whole story. I had a practically ring side seat.
Good going!! From a senior admirer!
Thanks! I was just putting together a presentation of bird photos taken from my kayak when your comment reached me. Birding from a kayak is a lot of fun and sure keeps me going! Everyone should give it a try. 🙂
Perfect music to accompany those playful otters!
Joan, thank you so much for also posting these videos on UA-cam. I appreciate being able to view them full screen on my PC. What a beautiful tribute to Steve. May his memory be a blessing.
Thanks for watching, ms Catnipper! We could all feel his presence so strongly there. We could even chat with him!

Who's winning?
What a mesmerizing event to witness!
This is so lovely.
If I came up on this on a trail, I'd have shot them both.
I have never witness anything like this at all, it must mating time for these repitkes , and these makes didn't care if were being filmed, aware of humans bikes pasting bye.
Good Content Today
It looks like a lot of work! But very interesting! Humans have killed for a mate as well!
Wow, what an extraordinary wildlife sighting! Thanks so much to Kathy for sharing it.
I'm glad the bicyclists didn't bother them, nor anyone else, apparently. The way it should be. Really interesting. Thanks for this, Kathy!
85 years old? Wtf?! Really? You looks like 57!! I want you! I'm 42! Ha ha I'm going to kayaking my whole life. Thanks for sharing this. Keep it on! I recommend you trying to fish in a kayak if didn't yet
Do you still kayak?
Yes, now at 86, I have a nice light sit-on-top (39lbs) and I kayak the Sacramento River and the local lakes usually once or twice a week in good weather. I can still go alone, but prefer company these days. The thought of "how much longer . . ." is ever present, but for now, I am happily paddling.
@joanrob1 that's awesome! You go girl!
There are some of those critters in my garden (the European variety of course, as I live in central France). They are fun to watch as they really fly like hummingbirds do!
Stunning capture!
Beautiful! I imagine it could be challenging to find those nests.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Joan! My mother just turned 80 and started kayaking. She's been asking about ideas to make it possible for her to transport her kayak, and I'm sure she'll find this helpful, as do I. I may not be 80, but as a small person I find it challenging to get my own kayak on the roof of my small SUV! Very inspiring! Enjoy your adventures!
As I wrote just above to Amy, not sure how much longer I can do this, but it's still quite doable with my Hullivator. Being able to attach all the straps on the ground is a huge plus. And being out on the water keeps me serene and healthy even in these troubled times. We small people can figure out a way!
Great job! I am 68, small Asian woman...it is getting harder for me to load my kayak and I was dreading the day when it was so inconvenient that I would no longer take my boat out. I am so glad you made this video, I will use the same method and look forward to many more years of kayaking. Thank you a thousand times!
Thanks Franki. You just made my day! Happy kayaking! Off to meet my granddaughter and her husband for a ride on the Sacramento River. 😀
Looking into buying the stands...I already have the hullavator. I'm getting a new boat next month that will be heavier than my current one. And I'm short, so I need something to help me get the boat up by myself. Thank you for the ideas, Joan. I sure hope that when I reach your age, I'm 65 now, that I'll still be at it like you are.
You go girl! The stands make it really easy. If you're handy, you could probably make something far less expensive.
To get to the otter side 😺😺😺😺🤣🤣🤣🤣😻😻😻😻
Wow, what a miraculous experience. Happy for you!
Thank you so much!
Such a magical experience - one you'll never forget.
Never ever!
You’re awesome! I’m not 80, but at 5’1”, I think this is an absolutely great idea. Thank you for sharing😊
Now that I have a light kayak, I don't have to crawl underneath to lift up. I can just reach with my arms. Way better! I have a 39lb Hurricane now.
Very good observation and lovely photographs. Superb.
Thanks so much. I'm such a fan of Pygmy Owls--I feel privileged to be able to observe this little family.
What a beautiful mini-documentary! Very well-done. And the star is a petite stunner :)
Hi Joan.. Hope you're still kayaking. Stay strong.
Yep, I'm going out tomorrow, as a matter of fact. 🙂
You rock kid! Love it. Let me know if you ever get to the Northern Neck, I'd consider it an honor to host you for a paddle. (only if you load my kayak though)
Love this comment! Thanks for the invite!
AS OF TODAY, THE PRICE HAS GONE UP TO $920. THERE ARE LESS EXPENSIVE WAYS TO MOUNT A KAYAK ON A CAR.
Luckily mine still works for me. Show me something easier and cheaper that an 86 yr old 110lb woman can manage by herself and I'd gladly switch! 🙂
Wonderful video Joan💚
Thanks so much!
Wow! I was reading the Hullavator Pro blog from Enviroyak and found you in the comments which brought me to this video. First of all; you're amazing! Like you, I'm an outdoors gal but a young one at 68 and I sure hope to be like you when I'm 80. Great video, and very inspirational. Thanks for all the tips and keep on going strong sister!😘
May you grow gracefully into your name! LOL! Seriously, thanks for the comment. I'm very very lucky to be able to continue following my passion. It requires a bit more work every year to stay strong, but it's worth it! Thanks for your kind comment.
@@joanrob1 Haha!🤣I like that! I'm trying...You're very welcome Joan. I'm also a photographer and was looking at all your photos on your website. Wow! Beautiful... Very talented my dear lady. Stay strong.😊
Yes, very lucky! As am I, to have the opportunity to watch this intimate encounter.
Lovely video. And a beautiful nest. Very sweet.
Thanks, Sharon!
