Do we really have to have the kids talking nonsense in the videos? Whatefa?
Thanks for the info. I was wondering if all brake controllers have a button?
It's not that hard. People make it hard by not taking a minute to get out and check your surroundings, asses your options and then DO it.
It's quite telling that adult problems are articulated in this manner and yet still there are those who cannot (or will not) understand basic lessons putting themselves, their family and other road users (and their families) at risk! Great lessons from @rvsafe for new and old caravan owners alike.
As a truck driver.. the larger the trailer the easy it is
YES YES YES! Finally I see a video for RV owners that acknowledges "please don't slow down until the truck is passing you. If you see a truck gaining on you DO NOT SLOW DOWN"
I love the look of that bullbar!
Thanks for this one Pat, but why about on the highways, or main roads like around Tumut, where you are at or above 60kph , that’s where I first and often find myself on the edge of brake fade,
I always suggest reversing if possible where you can see the drivers side of the caravan. If unsure get out and walk the site discuss with spotter where you the caravan needs to go. Spotter is better on the drivers side for safety and communication.
Simple, Clear but the Best. Thanks heaps.
It’s grace because I keep seeing her your. Match
Those are minivans that's not even the Caravan those are fake cars and what is that car called
What about a rearview camera ?
Hi Willem, Whilst a rear view camera can be very helpful, if you legally need towing mirrors and cannot use a camera as a replacement.
Never load the heavy weights `concentrated over the axle - loads should be spread evenly over the full length of the platform with a positive bias on the nose up to the limit of the tow bar - you can hang your bikes on the rear of your trailer as long as other weights are spread along the whole floor. Concentrating heavy loads over the axle will increase the risk of an uncontrolled sway since the lighter the ends front and rear are the easier it is for a side wind to push it out of line as in a flywheel effect around the axle centre then the weight over the wheels will add inertia to the return stroke back to the centre of equilibrium. - physical Fact. yet they have not worked this out - I would stand up infront of any one prepared to listen and demonstrate why - so far dumb idiots produce model rolling road that is totally misleading and I could show them why. Until these myths are removed there will be no solution.
gentle speed up in 4wd/rwd vehicule can stabilize than let it slow down
As speed increases, stability decreases so you really ought to ease off the accelerator and apply the trailer brakes to bring trailer sway under control.
@@rvSafe if you go down hill you may have to wait for terrain change with these

This seems like a documentary about caravan sway made for kids. Very weird.
hint: outlaw caravans, f f s
Don't worry about that they will be gone when diesels and petrol fuel is stopped sooner than you think and also motorhomes - the 15 minute rule is almost upon us and already cars being banned from entering cities.
no worry...I know somebody who motored around the continent off-loading restaurants of that french fry fuel he'd converted the engine of his TRUSTWORTHY fifth wheel to be sipping ;)
he did end up stinking like what you old worlders must call "chippy"
I am surprized that no one knows what to do if a caravan or large trailer starts to sway, A swaying caravan or trailer will start steering the car in either direction, Do not try to fight this as you will only make things worse, Lock your arms and steer straight ahead take your foot of the accelerator, do not apply the brakes or accelerate the vehicle, You can apply the trailer brakes if you are able. I have used this method and it does work. If the problem persists you will need to proceed at a slower speed & fit anti sway bars to your vehicle
Hi Barry - when I try to explain how a sway starts and how to stop it - it is falling on deaf ears almost all will not admit they experience snake all the time and just clench their bums and slow down to silly speeds in case others accuse them poor driving, speeding or loading. If you ask many they will say they do all the recommended things and still get bad sway. This is because the advice is wrong and until that is recognised the solution will never get out.
Don't you just love the bikes hanging from the back of the caravan after telling you to distribute your weight correctly They make a great pendulum
Ron I have hung two electric bikes on the rear of my Bailey Pageant Imperial for the last 10 years and 35,000 miles along the busiest autoroutes in France through the Pyrenees in all weathers and traffic densities with total confidence and as an Engineer I can cover pendulums and SHM if you like. see above comment.
@@Cruner62 you have been lucky
@@philbarnett9274 I can assure you luck is not the answer the definition of luck is when preparation meets opportunity and I have a system fitted that prevents snaking (uncontrolled sway) that many people believe is something that there is no problem that needs fixing, and I can prove this without any doubt that there are myths abounding that needs removing if any action is to be taken. Now I had stopped trying to get the industry to listen for years but have made an attempt to try again but I can see it is not going to work so I give up and will just watch as the incidents keep occurring caused by people like you. I can say without question that most caravan users experience sway every time they set out so the drive around at 50mph clinching their bottoms when/ if they overtake a truck and this need not be so. With a proactive control system it is like driving the vehicle with confidence like the modern braking systems offer.
@@Cruner62 after years caravanning and my job of picking vehicles up nationwide on trailers towing with a number of 4x4 tow vehicles working for a Ferrari dealer had I loaded up a rear engine car forward on my trailer it would have been a disaster waiting to happen It’s strange it’s just you who seems to have the opinion it’s ok I repeat you have been lucky
@@philbarnett9274 Hi Phil Let me explain when you loaded the trailer with the car having a rear engine then that is the reason why it would have been a bad thing to do since the weight would not be distributed on the whole length of the trailer, however if you still had a positive load on the ball up to the maximum the tow bar would allow then that would be ok and as good as it gets without a proactive anti sway in place - you are missing my point. If you understood beams a loads you would know the rules. "Clockwise moments = Anticlockwise moments" to work out with formulae where the axle pivot should be placed as Engineers like myself would have done when they built the trailer. I recognise your wealth of driving experience but like many don't understand engineering practices. If the overhang aft of the axle seems too long it will be for what the trailer was designed to carry ie if it was an artic the axles always seem to have a longer overhang aft of the axles but that is because it was designed to carry pallets evenly along the whole length of the trailer where some of the load is taken by the tractor unit. If you still need answers please reply.

This is legitimately terrifying, whoever designed it needs an exorcism.

the animation in this ad somehow seems like they used a ton of stock animations

She's hot !
Apply the trailer brakes ?? This video is going about a car towing a caravan, not a Truck and trailer with separate trailer brakes. I've never seen a car with a "trailer brake" button or lever hahaha
I suggest you get out more. They are common.
@@aj-qj4lt This is where trucks and caravans differ - a truck and drag as we call them in the UK has a few variations one with a simple pin and yolk some have a 5th wheel turntable, however the weights and mass make sway almost an impossible event as long as the trailer is unloaded first and almost all will have air operated brake systems with ABS incorporated on both truck and trailer. Artics have a separate control valve to act as an emergency brake feature - it is not intended to stop any "sway" because that will never occur, what can occur is jack knife created when/if the trailer brakes fail and the secondary emergency system also fails.
I think this misses on a couple of key areas. Firstly you do mention the pressure wave from trucks when you are overtaking, but not how significant it is or how to manage a surge. (Applies to overtaking on dual lane carriageways too) Secondly you didn’t mention that being overtaken also gives same effect from truck passing you.
Bruh i dont even have a car bruh why just why is it recommended
4th option, install stiff suspension at the rear of towing vehicle and it won't allow sway. I did 20 000 safe km with xc70 towing 7 meter camper in every weather and climate. Now towing 2800kg with a Sprinter van with reinforced stiff rear suspension ... 5th option, get a towing vehicle with an old style frame... trailer won't get any possibility for sway
Piotr 🚗🚋
good video, but did you consider maximum axle loading, and combined mass? and where to place the load in the van?
Hi! Of course we have, but for the purpose of this video we decided to keep it simple to avoid confusion. We do mentioned load distribution in another of our animations. For more detailed information, you can visit our website! The rvSafe Team
Option 4: Don't tow a 30' RV with a Toyota RAV 4.
LMFAO 🤣
250kg hitch weight?
After having three kids , trailer sway is the only ride she’s going to feel!
tooo right, that mother is so hot
in the old days in GB caravan owners were told when purchasing do not go over 50mph. or you'll lose it and could end up dead . or badly injured.
In my days, we were told not to go over 88mph, we might find ourselves doing our vacation in another time.
Been there done that - put the brakes on wrote off caravan and car - never again but fucking trailer brakes? never seen them before.
Please see the overhang on the caravan. THAT'S the cause of the sway. TOO BLOODY much overhang. When ordering a caravan or even a box trailer ALWAYS opt for the 60 / 40 rule. If the dealer can't / won't do it your way, go somewhere else. 60 % in front / 40%to the rear. You may still have some slight sway but the combination will be much more controllable. Also use your electric brake controller to apply the trailer brakes. Having said this, if your caravan started to sway you would have both hands on the wheel, your eyes bulging WIDE open and you will be too busy shitting yourself to even think about applying the trailer brakes. Any caravan or trailer that has wheels in the middle, PISS it off.
Warren you are almost there on some parts - Loads should be spread evenly over the full length of the floor front to rear with a positive bias over the nose to the maximum tow bar allowance -. the trailer brakes should never be applied when the trailer is on the return stroke since it will add impetus on the return to equilibrium resulting in the kinetic energy going over centre, here is the algorithm "Apply a force equal and opposite at or before the centre of equilibrium" by applying a braking force only to the "accelerating" wheel not the decelerating one. This can never be achieved manually since there is a risk of wheel lock and then jack knife unless ABS is involved on each wheel. Only one system can achieve this on overrun brakes "Differential Stability"(c) in combination of a double acting hydraulic damper. If ya need more proof ask away I will be pleased to help you if you can follow technical solutions. I would be delighted to go head to head with you to prove that this is the way to go. I am a qualified Transport Engineer of 40 years Experience. This system removes the bum clenching when overtaking a truck.
Are you using 'National Specs' or state legislation figures. Manufacturers will tell you any old rubbish. I recently had 'discussions' with the head office of a large vehicle manufacturer regarding their recommended towbar setup. I also spoke to an independant engineer who told me a completely different story. I took the engineers advice and our van tows great. (loaded correctly) Perth based.
Hi Colin, we are referring to the Australian Design Rules which are enforced through legislation. The Australian Design Rules state weights limits as specified by the manufacturer.
