Initial Impressions: Basque Pruning Axe 1KG 60CM 2024.
After all the quality issues over the 2022-23 period. I wanted to investigate if the Urnieta Basque axes had improved in their quality.
Other I got lucky or this company has sorted out their issues and are producing some of the best axes in the world.
Highly highly recommend.

Unboxing of some Filipino test blades. I like to hold a traditional blade and test it out before designing one of my own. As I’ve done plenty of Khukuri designs and art last a few machetes and tomahawks, I thought it might be time to try some blades from a different location. Enjoy and please feel free to suggest other blade styles if you are keen to see them modernised in my style.

    Glad you liked it. The question about quality control has been an internet thing, here in the Basque Country we haven't noticed it by any ways. Worst thing is I know which is the origin of this, I have talked to some who have mostly spoken about it and surprisingly noone has given this información in public. Let me explain. First of all, I know the maker personally, I consider him my friend but I haven't got any economical nor business ties with him. Indeed I have paid him all the axes I have got from him and at normal prices. I should add I helpt him some years ago to sell his axes internationally. This said, the problem about quality issues were real, at least in part. When Urnieta axes became popular people bought all the axes internet could sell to them. This brought the atention of all kind of sellers, some good, others not as good. Some of them bought axes from local hardwares and reselled them at higher prices. Those axes are not aesthetically nor geometrically as well finished as Lamina ones, so they regrinded and polished them. At least one of them was honest and wrote about what did he do in his website. Preocupated about what was happening I contacted Jose Ramón, the maker. He told me nothing has he changed and he was not receiving any special complains. So I contacted the people who were complaining about QC issues. All who responded had one thing in common, they bought axes from those who regringded them. The problem was not in the maker but in those who tried to make profit by regrinded axes. Now it looks like they sell untouched axes, but I use to recommend Lamnia to those who ask me about Basque axes. It's a pity those who I saw complaining about the issues and knew the truth did made issues public but I didn't see them doing the same with the root of the problem. Glad you tried an axe bought from a trustworthy seller and you liked it. Ask me if you want to know more about anything. Best regards. Jon

    I have owned the 800 gram straight edge version of this for a few years now and was unaware that there were any QC issues. It is actually permanently attached to one of my go to rucks. Even though I usually have a khukuri with me, I will always be an axe guy!

    • @sundogforgebydml1050
      @sundogforgebydml1050 Місяць тому

      Yeah Ben Scott and some other prolific axe people were talking about them losing chunks from edges and such and even went so far as issuing a buyer beware notice for them. Mines amazing and I love it lol. Still wouldn’t mind a really nice hickory haft or spotted gum haft but the haft it has is totally fine as well.

      I do know what you mean. Thing Is I’ve tried straight, thick, thin, curved and full tang and they have all failed in the same ways. They have bent or they have broken at the tang. I make blades. I know exactly what I’m talking about when I say all the issues I’ve experienced have been because of two reasons. First, the woods I cut are very hard and dense and twisted. I test the blades hard on these woods and am not surprised when they fail sometimes. Second the heat treatment on everything I’ve tried has had some issues. The one I’ll eventually build will hopefully rectify those issues. I’m not saying it will for sure. I’m testing to see if I can. If the one I build passes. It will confirm my theories. If mine breaks it’ll simply confirm that the blade type cannot do what I’m asking it to.

    I wanted a Kukri, and the cost difference between a good one of modern make, and an original wasn't really big, so I went for the real deal first. I have one of the Longleaf Kukri from Atlanta Cutlery, and used it to down a couple of small walnut trees in the yard by the property line. My neighbor saw me and was blown away how quick I delimbed and took them down with "just a knife". Then I told him how old it was. These things can put in some serious work. The devanagari on mine dated the blade 1901-1929, so the dates IMA and ACC are giving out aren't strictly accurate for the arsenal, but it was neat seeing which battalion it was made for.

    • @sundogforgebydml1050

      I think anyone who thinks they want a Khukuri should at least try an original to baseline what they have in mind when they look for a modern one. The originals are amazing. There are still some Bishwokorma that can make them like that. But they are hard to find.

I’m getting a Kukri some time within this week or so, and to learn its nuances, I will use it in the kitchen first. It’s a great baseline for knowing your knife’s limitations. Great video!

      SunDog in this context has multiple meanings. In the scientific sense it’s part of the natural phenomenon called a Parhelion. But it can also invoke the mental image of an exhausted dog that’s been too long out in the sun. That’s a very Australian image. I plan on a sunburnt dog holding a knife and drinking a beer with my emblems being printed on merchandise at some stage. As for the symbology and mythology behind the Parhelion? That would take forever to write here because the primary visual representation of a Parhelion looks a lot like the old Celtic cross which is one of the oldest symbols in the world. I hope that helps at least a little. Happy to chat more about it if you’d like to PM me through Messenger.

      Amazingly well. It actually looks way better now. The one I’ve got touring has been beat to shit and is loving life. The one with me has been beat up even more and hasn’t missed a beat. True apocalypse knives so long as you can control the rust but in my environment I’ve done nothing to protect mine besides a natural patina and it’s been totally fine. No rust at all.
