My theory: After Arthur died, Merlin was thinking for many centuries and finally had an idea; to reincarnate Arthur and himself. Arthur had been born again but with a different name, Bradley. Merlin, still alive, started his life over; his immortality removed and also with a different name, Colin. With Camelot times over, Colin and Bradley will finally live the lives they wanted, free from the binds of prophecy. The castle in which Arthur once ruled still stood there, signifying that Gwen was a capable queen and did an amazing job reserving the castle even after death. The castle is now a historical site. All of this did not come without a price. Colin had to reset his age as well as have Bradley born again while both retained their memories of Camelot times. This power required so much magic that it sapped Colin clean of his magic powers, hence why we don't see him use magic in modern day. He sacrificed his magic to live the lives that were otherwise wasted. This video is a prime example of season 6.
