Angling?? Expensive?? Not on my clicker!!
In recent years my match fishing has taken a back seat, and in response to tackling Anglings Obstacles I've started focussing more on whats best for the sport. Fishery Audits, Tackle Reviews and bringing back some great preloved items to the bank is where i find my entertainment.
There's not a single aspect of angling that doesn't take my fancy. If it can catch fish, i'm casting it!
If you have any suggestions for the channel simply say so in the comments. There's not much i'll turn my nose up at and ultimately i'm bringing content here for you guys.
Thanks for the support, thanks for being there and thank you for giving me some great angling adventure suggestions.
Now, lets get some fish caught!

FREE RIVER FISHING!!! Fishery Audit #24.
With all this recent bad weather and Storm Dave or whatever they’ve called it, I decided to bin the fishing. Perfect conditions for the fish, but not the microphones.
So I thought I’d treat you to a walk down my local River and show you just what’s on offer. Even better, ITS FREE!!!
Easily accessible, very rover friendly and a nice looking bit of water.
I certainly need to start doing more river exploring, and I thought this would be a great area for you to start too.
River Rother, Killamarsh. Parking on Station Road.

HARTHILL RESERVOIR UPDATE. FAQ’s around the STILL OPEN sluice gates.
Переглядів 9139 годин тому
After quite a few messages and comments over growing concerns for the res and why the sluice gates are still open, I thought I’d have a pop down and explain the why, when and if’s. Quite a few of you have asked why they are still open and in all honesty I don’t know why they haven’t been locked closed from the start. But! The flow needs to be monitored for any potential leak off areas, the syst...
NORTHERN LAKE, ROTHER VALLEY FISHERY AUDIT #23. Stunning!!
Переглядів 8419 годин тому
Back to Rother Valley and today we’re visiting Northern Lake. Northern Lake is the 2nd lake here which can be fished and is situated at the very north of the complex. After Fishery Audit #22 unveiled a hell hole of litter around Nethermoor Lake I thought it would be in everybody’s best interest to see just what else is on offer at this popular day ticket fishery. Rother Valley well and truly re...

Another local venue today for Fishery Audit #22 and upon arrival I was excited to share what I assumed would be a great venue. I mean it’s got water.. but besides the fishing on offer the overall upkeep of the place is non existent. Absolutely loads of litter spreads far and wide up the banks, numerous discarded BBQ’s in the lake, no onsite bins or waste management and huge safety concerns over...

Ahhh, Hallcroft…. The place where angling based dreams are made! Well being in a good relationship with Hallcroft Fishery and being a regular customer of theirs, I stopped by to ask if they minded me giving the venue a good walk around on camera and showing the world just exactly what’s on offer inside the gates. In this video you’ll see every lake covered, the local river stretch and all the a...

Yep!! I heard them too! But sometimes hearing rumours and horror stories isn’t half as enjoyable as facing them head on. So being local I opted to visit what is a beautiful Butterley Reservoir and give the place a good scour for any of these terrible fantasies I’ve been told and shown of. What I didn’t expect was to enter a Horror Story and walk out of a fairy tale! Times have changed people!! ...
CODNOR PARK, FISHERY AUDIT #19.

I’ve fished Codnor park in the past but never had a real reason to give it a good thorough tour and absorb it as a whole. Today you get it as raw as I do where I circle the place in full and show you just how much effort the club has put in. What you can’t see however is the magnitude of work that the club has carried out behind the scenes. And life saving work too!!! Anyway, watch the video an...
WHERE HARTHILL RESERVOIR REALLY GETS ITS WATER FROM!!
Переглядів 93914 днів тому
My last Harthill res update spawned a few comments on both Facebook and UA-cam which suggested Pebley Res is responsible for the influx of water. After a full weekend of rain my partner passed Pebley and said not much water seemed to be in it which had me questioning the whole thing. So, sticking to public footpaths and not breaking down private property gates, I set about on foot to see just w...

2 days of snow, a night of rain and a hole to fill. Houston, we have contact!! Harthill reservoir now has water to its highest possible level with the gates open. Now we’ll see just how much water it’ll hold and a good view of just how much more water is required to fill it up. The first day of water flow through the outlet is today 23/11/2024.

Vicar Water, 9 miles from my front door and I didn’t even know it! Well today Vicar Waters is currently the safest, cleanest, cheapest and most accessible for all fishery I’ve ever attended in my life! Harthill Reservoir Water Update 20/11/2024. Repairs looking good!
Переглядів 84314 днів тому
20/11/2024 Res update: Water level has come up but most of the volume has dispersed outwards and not upwards. Plenty of snow to melt yet so it’ll happen shortly. The destroyed steps have been repaired to what seems like a high standard too. After I finished the video I met a chap in the car park of Pond 2 who was sat in a mini digger making a HUGE improvement. It’s always been a mud bath most t...
Winter Carp Fishing on £15 Supermarket Tackle. NGT & Angling Pursuits.
Переглядів 2,4 тис.21 день тому
After seeing all this NGT gear on eBay and in the shops in recent years, it’s become apparent that quality lies beneath because I’m seeing even more of it on the banks. So in a bid to give some of the tackle a try I had a scroll through eBay and remembered that a small local supermarket/homeware store sold the same gear. So I had a pop in, collected a feeder rod, a cheap reel and headed off to ...

Another quick update for anybody following. After a spot of rain these last few days I thought I’d have a check in on the Res and it’s come up significantly. A few finishing touches being added which is great as some of these areas were damages that needed repairing. Few more days and I think it’ll be ready to breach the outlet. The big question is though, what do you do with the mice you catch??

Scrolling through google earth the other day looking for any local waters to fish, I stumbled across these 2 little ponds in Tibshelf. After a quick Facebook post it turns out it’s ran by a very highly valued club and the main man is in fact a friend of mines father. In the mist of requesting a days fishing there with Gary, the clubs gaffa, I thought I’d give it a quick visit and see just how n...

Chesterfield Canal to be dug even longer??? With a new Bridge!
I lived in Ripley for 18 months 30 odd years ago with work ,fished Butterley many times and it was a fantastic bream water .Used to fish a few matches too ,one of which was the first time I used braid which cost me the match due to loosing fish as I wasn’t used to it ☹️☹️
Really enjoying your videos, Ben, and seen a few venues I'd fancy trying. Out of interest, I saw a video from about 7 years ago when they were netting the pike. Sounds like there are still some in there. Do you know if they left some bigger ones in there? I think we are lucky to have so many decent local venues. Keep up the good work! Cheers
Its poor fishing that, you can tell by the wear on the bank, nobody fishes it. When our club controlled it, Alwin used to talk it up, me n barry used to give it go with stick float n maggots, four foot deep, beautiful run through......1 stickleback all day. I've got photos of us set up on our boxes n platforms. Thats why Nethergreen let it go. If there was barbell n chubb in, the banks would be lined. And they are not. Its like most of the Rother, barren, I know, I've suffered for 30 years! 👍
The best stretch of the Rother is Catcliff, Ashfield Angling control it, £27.50 for the year, proper platforms, my point is, people fish it, so there is snap going in 👍
Fact: *EA bailiffs regularly walk the banks in this area as they too know it is free fishing*
Hi Ben, only been watching you for a few weeks and im really enjoying your content. Im more of a game fisherman but it takes alsorts dont it. I just watched your Harthill video, really unlucky about your tender but remember whats for you will not go by you. Id love to have a chat and pick your brains as im on my own journey into starting a learning difficulty/mental illness focused club/charity ( try getting that mouthfull into a proposal). If you get a chance give me a shout, if not no dramas. Keep on with the videos their hitting in thr right way.👍
Nice video mate, can you do a river don video from Sheffield area especially if you find a stretch with good access for the disabled angler, cheers
That’s a good shout mate👏🏼 I imagine many disabled anglers love the flowing stuff as opposed to still waters. Leave it with me, I know a spot👍🏼
Do we actually have credible accounts of what's been caught or can be caught in this stretch.🤔
I wasn’t convinced but locals and regulars say it’s still home to some great fish. The barbel in the thumbnail was caught just downstream and a 6lb Chubb came out in January this year to a chap who’s messaged me with pictures on Facebook. Without devaluing the place I’ve had some cracking minnows and crayfish out😃
About 25 to 30 years ago the Rother was classed as the dirtiest river in Europe and was barren of fish and aquatic life
I was just reading the barbel catch reports from AT. They titled them as “huge barbel caught from the countries most polluted river”. I think me having a good days fishing on there will be ambitious but I’ve had folk send me net heads full of roach from this very stretch. It’ll be all fun and games😂
Nethergreen club had that stretch years ago .we put 20 pegs in but no help from river authority on stocking .need to get hold of who owns an you an me run it lol
Can you imagine lol. River Rather Not AC💪🏼
Must be over ten yr since I fished it .trotting with maggots I could get a netful of silver fish had odd carp an tench .would go prebait a spot for a few weeks get fish in a area .is car park behind factory still there .go up forge lane to get up with car
Lost count of how many times you've explained it, if people don't understand by now it's their own fault for not paying attention.
Hi Ben, love watching your video’s mate and like yourself I like my silver fish fishing and natural venues. It’s such a shame to see a wonderful fishing venue with so much litter. I hate to see litter and crap just chucked about.
They need to be left open fully and not closed to a few inches. If it raises in the next few days, such as with the incoming storm this weekend. It needs to lower back to the current level as quickly as possible.
Still awaiting the final snagging jobs to be completed and engineers sign off of the first phase of refill. The new sluices are only for emergency drawdown purposes. Normal feed will be via the existing valve in the tunnel. Cracks me up people sit confused and speculate instead of just sending in their questions that can be easily answered 😅
All those iron railings but nothing on outflow to stop fish losses .architectural intelligence at its best an not an ounce of common sense or on the ground intellect .good job again mate cheers 👍
Ben, Tried to explain this before - the sluice gates will stay open until CRT have had the safety sign off of this stage - they will then be closed and are ONLY to be used in an emergency with a risk of flooding - the main draw off, to control the water level is in the middle of the res on the bed. Additionally, the water is never meant to go over those 'cut outs'. Again, that is an emergency release, in case CRT can't get to the res in time, just as it was with the old spillway, which as far as I'm aware was only ever needed once since 1957 when the Sailing Club opened - at that stage we had water up to the front door!
I can see this dam was designed by a genius
Loving the videos mate. Could probably do with a stainless mesh cage in front of both the gates to release the water and stop the bigger fish escaping. If the height of the dam wall is higher than the surroundings I wonder what the reason for that is. Maybe a sluice gate higher up the wall would help. Let's hope the authorities see this video and answer the questions.
Had a few decent carp outta there over years. And a few outta nature reserve 😮
Hall croft only have a short section of the river for fishing right at the upstream end of the grounds. All the rest is controlled by Derbyshire country angling club as members only. In fact every bit of river you looked at is DCAC ticket lol
I was made aware of it about an hour after filming. Worse thing I did was ask a chap the week before about the river and he said behind the river ponds is a great area and it’s all covered on the Hallcroft ticket. Anyway, I’ll do an update video next time I’m here and set the bill straight. Not only can I not fish rivers but I know absolutely nothing about them either 😂
Hayton fishery just round the corner from here, absolutely brilliant. Say hello to Toby(the baliff). He is a character and a gentleman of the best quality.🤝👍
Hayton looks an incredible place too Barry. I’d love to get a few sessions on there besides a good tour of the place. I’ll pop it on the “to do” list and if they’re happy for me to do a tour some time it would be great for more people to see the place 👏🏼
@thatson01 Toby would no doubt give you the guided tour of the big place, take a packed lunch 🥵🤣
Mink
I used to fish this when I was a kid,as some good days there, I agree with David clarke, bream arnt a nuisance, if you caught a carp when fishing for a bream, that was a bonus,to me they can keep there carp fishery, take the rest of the fish out and put them in other local clubs who'd appreciate them..
Why should bream be a nuisance fish just because 3 rods in a tent want bragging rights . Fished that venue since the 70s ,cut our teeth as kids for roach and perch and it was the bream anglers that supported it all those years. Had a bad experience a couple of years ago with a very arrogant bailiff who made it quite clear us bream anglers weren't welcome ,they can certainly keep it as far as I'm concerned.
Its a heritage railway Midland Railway.
Another local fishery to me. The reason it's so well maintained and so much money is being piled into it is because it's run in the main as a carp fishery - general course fishing just doesn't generate the same revenue. There is still some good course fishing on offer available on day ticket. The current management team/ club committee have transformed the place over the last 10 years or so.
Ben have you heard about rowthorn lane carr ponds near Hardwick hall it is a members only club there is 4 ponds and the membership is around 30 pound for the year and its is located in the Hardwick hall estate
Hi Ben great video , I fished codnor years ago , put it on my bucket list now for a visit , probably try a burger as well while I’m there , got to agree it looks very nice Reservoir & fishery 👌
I appreciate your diary of harthill. I learned to swim in there in 70s an used to swim to island in pebley as a teen
Great video of my local res 👍try looking at tibshelf and newton ponds in tibshelf Derbyshire, great little venue for all the family, very clean and tidy ,and friendly people who run it too 👍
That was an interesting walk around the reservoirs, looking at where the water comes from. It's just a matter of time before CRT decides that they will close the sluice gates and let Harthill fill up properly.
@tlangdon12 hopefully the first phase will be signed off in a few weeks time when engineers are happy and remedial works complete. Will be held below spilling level for the 2nd phase
Hi Ben I have just seen a comment on Facebook someone asking where all the Bream from Butterley Res went and they said a lot went in Codner and they are removing more from Butterley because the carp men don't like catching them, Great filming again
I've fished "the park" since the late 70's and it's not a patch on what it used to be like - due to the modifications they made in the mid 80's - dropped the water level by about 3 foot and diverted the old cromford canal into the res. Before this it was crystal clear, weed in the margins and extensive lilly beds at the top end (shallows). The colour of the water now is because of the canal now running into it. The former feeder stream for it comes in under the little bridge you walked across - which you probably noticed was very clear water. It used to be a brilliant tench venue and was so rich in natural food it was doing carp to mid 30's in the late 80's - which for the East Midlands was a massive fish at the time. The lake had a stocking of carp by the then lease holders - Ripley and district angling club and the water became a really good mixed fishery with a good head of 20lb plus carp. Unfortunately the modifications came shortly after and the water quality started to deteriorate due to run off from the surrounding fields into the canal which now fed directly into the res. Ripley and district lost the lease to the res not long after and the new lease holder decided to turn the res into a match fishery and stocked a lot of small carp. Within days of this stocking nearly the entire original stock of large carp died and the general course fishing had been declining since the modifications had been done - all of the weed and lilly pads died off due to the dirty water coming in from the canal blocking sunlight from entering the water. No weed = less natural food and less spawning area's and no where for any fry to take cover. The water quality also killed off a lot of the bloodworm beds. Further stockings of different species of fish did nothing to improve the situation until the current lease holders started stocking large bream from butterley res a bit further up the valley. The koi carp that are in their came from my granddad's pond after he died. When his house got sold the new owners filled the pond in and the fish ended up in the res. If you stand on the overflow bridge with a torch at night you will see a lot of smaller fish swimming over it into the the stream that used to be the canal. The canal used to have no fish in it further down but is absolutely stuffed with all species now. The canal empties into the river Erewash at jacksdale which is also stuffed full of fish now. Cracking video mate 🙂
Used to have some great sessions bagging up on big tench
The water held in Pebley has been transferred to Harthill for the first stage of the refill. Closed off last week in anticipation of the storm
Good head of silvers big bream over 10lb good head of carp to 25 lb+ good for waggler feeder and pole
I can’t wait to give it a try mate. Looks a great venue for some good fish🎣
Morning Ben - thanks for the update - by the way, I don’t own the sailing club - I’m the Commodore (think Golf Club Captain) - the club is actually owned by the members as shareholders. Most of the vegetation will die off very quickly - it’s the willow samplings that have taken root that need addressing urgently - we’ve already dug about 50 out at the root. I’m back in the UK next week and weather permitting will look to do another flyover video.
Hi Chris, hope the holiday is going well. Ahh, that’s good to know! At least it’s still ran by everybody with the ultimate interest at heart. That’s right mate, the willows are very concerning as they root deeper than most trees in their early stages of setting. The roots will pose a problem for anglers for a while but I’m hoping a lot of it loosens and rises to the surface. Enough so that officials can catch it before it blocks the new outlet system. I’ll keep an eye out for some of your aerial footage Chris. Safe travels buddy,
Why aren’t the sluice gates closed
It’s a mystery mate. But as there’s no fish in the 1st and 2nd lake it’s no detriment to fish life at the minute. But yes, they need closing to allow the water level to rise and help suffocate all the overgrown.
It needs to be refilled in stages. The first stage is to hold at the base concrete level until signed off as safe to progress to the next level. Standard practice when a dam has been left dry for so long
Great video, Once fish are back in what happens to them when the sluice gates are opened? Shouldn’t there be some mesh on it or are they wise enough to stay away?
Ideally mate the gates should be closed so the res can fill up and give us an idea where the capacity level is. I think it’ll be too high and a scarier thought is that the gates will stay permanently open. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Normal feed will come from the valve in the tunnel. The new sluices will only be used in an emergency
Very very informative
Glad it’s overflowing might get some compensation water in the canal
It’s definitely due a top up so this rain might just be the drink it’s needs Roy.
Bodge job
Has the work been signed off ( completed)by all parties involved with this project.* Have you a copy of what work that was scheduled to be carried out and a completion date.
Yep, all finished! And any contractors we see on site now are attending just to tick any final boxes and smooth over rough edges. But yes, as of now the project is 100% complete and no further works are to be carried out.
Have you thought about approaching embryo for a job on Harthill 😀
I offered to manage the complex for free meaning a 100% return to the C&RT(owners) and lowered day ticket prices. Embryo have their officials on payroll. It doesn’t take a annual salary to do the work I’ve already done on there and I live very very comfortably without having to take money from the anglers for only half a days fishing. So yes, I’ll do it, but they can put the whole thing in my name first so I can reinstall night fishing across all lakes, drop the costs and scream my demands at promised development ideas 👍🏼
Really good vid mate been nice to see harthill come back to life .still shocked they left all greenery in bottom gonna take years to rot .
OCD in action 🙄
If only!!
The first place I fished 60 years ago. It was open all round then with the pit top coming down to the lake. There were only a few wild carp in then. Bream, roach, perch and some big tench. It was run by the colliery fishing club then, it's changed massively. The best bream pegs were on the point opposite were you say you can't fish now. Brilliant must go back.
What a great review. The only thing you missed was the defibrillator that is located at the baliffs hut .
I do not think they are still in use but they are certainly a great land mark
Those towers are the headstock of old clipstone pit
Ahh, that’s interesting. Makes sense after seeing the wheels on them. Are they still in use for anything? Only reason I ask is as I left there was a lot of vehicles at the bottom of them. Hope they keep them up. Nice bit of history for the entrance to the village.
