I loved this video and the quote about the grass being greener where you water it 💚
I’m sorry to hear you were laid off, Amy :’( I can’t imagine how anxiety inducing that must have been and especially after moving so recently. As a subscriber since 2020, I can tell you are so reflective and resourceful and whichever path you choose to pursue next you will absolutely thrive! Also, thank you both for being vulnerable and sharing your journeys with us as always! I first found your channel in 2020 as an incoming transfer to UCLA and now I am one year post-grad feeling totally lost/paralyzed by what to do next. Your vulnerability and wisdom has helped me feel less alone multiple times while navigating life the past few years! Just know there is someone out there navigating starting over with you and rooting for you both!!
Yup. Will do between today and tomorrow..
You will be ok Amy, new doors will open. Jenny you had great insights about starting over. Wishing you success to both of you.
After watching so much "layoffs" video on UA-cam. Now i start thinking about whether to buy a house or just continue rent it? Definitely i don't think I'm able to secure a job with enough salary to pay my mortgage for 35yrs time, especially in this rapid change world.
Super insightful video! Keep it up - you two are crushing it with the videos and in life!!!
"...or people with ovaries"? oof
Hi everyone, Amy here! Just wanted to say thanks so much for all your comments - I read (and reread) every single one 🫶🏻 I was initially very hesitant about sharing this update online so I really appreciate the positivity and encouragement from everyone here 🥺 Especially for those who’ve shared your own stories with me - when Jenny and I started this channel, we wanted to create content that would help others feel less alone in their process so TYSM for helping me experience that instead ❤️ Stay tuned for more episodes as we continue this journey of starting over together!
Hi Amy, I wanted to say how much I admire your strength and openness during such a challenging time. It’s inspiring to see how you’re handling everything with curiosity and resilience. I have no doubt you’ll come out of this even stronger and on a path that’s right for you. Wishing you all the best, I’m excited to see where this next chapter takes you!
I've been laid off since the start of August. The market is crap globally, not just the US and what I find is that employers want a 110% match on a job before you even get a chance to interview hence I've only had 2 interviews for 2 different roles. It felt raw to me when I heard it and also felt the same feelings of "did I choose the wrong path?" questioning myself "why am I not marketable in the market?" ... and some days yes are hard, some days you're heads down knuckling down at applications and hussling the networks. It's absolutely shxt to put it politely and I'm well into my 40's where I should be making my money and setting myself up for retirement. It's a journey and I know in a year's time, we'll reflect on this time and laugh it off but when you're in the thick of it, it hurts.
So, as new life after layoff.
Can someone give me the Jenny's IG😅 tks you guys❤
You look like a Korean or East Japanese.
Wow such a bold video! What I got to learn fortunately very early is to not define myself by the work or income I am making. Instead I see my existence itself as very valuable. I got to meet some people who had never really worked in their lives and were the most happy and satisfied people I knew. And it's not they are lazy, they do a lot of stuff, they are just not payed for it and have accepted, that the payment you get does not necessarily correlate with the usefulness of what you're doing. All the best for your journeys they have been incredible to watch 🤍
Happened the same to me. One day on Monday, I received an call invite. Surprise surprise, I am the only one in the team that got laid off. I only had 3 days to decide if I want to take the severance or apply internally for other departments. I decide to leave & this was 4 months ago... life has been uncertain, full of surprise. I'm still discovering what I wanted to do next, just being open. Although I'm currently full of emotions from the layoff. Rooting for you and everyone here!
I just checked the layoffs-update doc. This is beyond messed up. So sorry about the layoff. Please look for openings on grow. I'm sure you can circle back soon enough. I know you were having troubles with your team. A new team could signal a fresh re-start.
Love the perspective. Having gone through this on the same timeline as you, all of of these shifts really resonate and are essential for being on this journey
Happened to me this year. I made a simple schedule. Stuck to it. Gave myself grace periods for more grieving, sleeping, weeping, saying yes to coffee’s, saying no to coffee’s. now I’m in designing a portfolio career mode trying to hold the space in this gap year to listen for what I really want and not just jumping back into corporate full time. Samir from Colin & Samir said - The minute you embrace the unknown with your time, the minute you become a creator. Enjoy this
Did you get laid off this week? I am interviewing and have another offer so I am debating.
Build your own mini-Google. Find way to compete in a dynamic / vertical SaaS that corp wont be able to focus on. Lets get on that startup arc (or take time to heal, breathe, reset, etc.). Laid off since Jan and told myself this is probably the only time in my life i can go on this startup arc - esp when leaders may not be able to truly support your career growth (bad leaders will feel insecure about your potential to speed past them - had one leader get promoted while i take the hit...). And im young and this is when we have the MOST energy. Thanks for listening to my James Talk.
I'm speaking from personal experience as a solo "founder". Having conviction is good and all, but the market/clients doesn't care about what you think. I spent 2 years on research and development for my first service. I was convinced it was going to work when I have the MVP. The uptake was not good. After 2 years of lackluster interest and performance, I pivoted to another service which I thought up of in 2 weeks. This time there is actual interest and uptake of my service. 4 years of my time wasted. Btw through all this, i worked part time minimum wage lifeguarding/receptionist, all these brain dead jobs so that I have time at work to think about the minor details how to make my service better, and to pay the bills. (My resume is screwed because of my choice). What I'm trying to say is: push out a MVP, then see if people are interested. Don't get too attached to any idea cus you might need to pivot. You can't manifest the world to like and pay for your product just because you spent alot of time and effort on it.
Are single, will be single and die single
YEY! My favorite series in UA-cam right now ❤
Laid off from Citrix. But I had just gotten married (literally got back from honeymoon, week after when it happened). For me it was big deal to get income quickly to support my family, so I quickly networked and took first solid offer I got. Looking back I recommend taking a breath, don't rush yourself.
Kinda feel the same as an early-stage founder as well
Thanks for sharing a bit of your journey, Amy! I've been there a few months ago. I'm still processing but one thing for sure helped me (and you've got it) which is concentrating on the present (or up to the very near future).
Didn't even know google was still doing layoffs, sorry to hear that
👍
Something I've found helpful is to convert anxious energy into excitement energy. Actually, those two states/feelings are very similar physiologically, and a lot of the time it's possible to reframe something anxiety-inducing into something excitement-inducing. This is a brand new chapter for you, Amy! I am excited to follow your journey!
I would have assumed as early employee at Notion, an executive and 4 years that one would have been set to retire financially after selling stock on secondary market. One setback or closed door another one opens. There will always be opportunities. I have friends whether at a government job or big tech also running their side business some of which already profits 7 figures a year and most at low to mid 6 figures so doing both big corporate or government and running their own thing.
Thank you for sharing Amy, I know you'll do amazing things next, whatever you choose to do. Google was lucky to have you!
Sorry to hear about the layoff. I'm in a similar boat right now and I want you to know that this channel has been a big help navigating everything. I’m sure you’re worried, but if your videos are any indication, you’re very clever and you’ll land on your feet soon.
I’m in LA and I’m interviewing at Google RN for SWE. Are you a swe?
you think they're SWE? They don't look like a lick of people who do SWE. Most likely scrum masters or product owners, leech in society.
Amy! Feel free to reach out to me if you’re looking for a referral. I went through something similar in the last year and it was a blessing in disguise but the emotional roller coaster was a doozie.
Amy, it might seem bad but you are off to great things perhaps! Thanks for sharing, great episode
Bravo to both of you! Sometimes life takes us to some places we didn't expect but I believe it is always leading to somewhere better for us. I really like your channel!!! Thank you so much for sharing
Thats really great thing what you said if just overthink about past decisions or regret over them it undermines all the progress.
This is a blessing in disguise, Amy. Welcome to your new chapter of self-discovery, looking forward to how you explore and navigate throughout this period of life ❤ I’m also starting over at a similar position so thank you for your comforting words, Jenny 💕 What I did: Lots of journaling and reading to really hone in on the essence of my Self. What brings meaning to your life and how do you want to live it?
Getting fired from Google is not a blessing

Hey met yeahll at the picnic in NYC ! and getting laid off can be a hassle Amy. When I think of your sitaution the best I can think of tip wise is a book recommendation which is Feel Good Producitity hope this read helps as much as it helped me if you have spotify premium the audio book is free on it!
Hi Jenny! I just wanted to say thank you so much for this video. Currently in uni and was struggling between which startup to work for and overthinking the whole process without even applying to a single one yet, I really loved your advice on how you said to treat your 20s like an experiment and like failures really don't exist because you are just trying stuff out. I noticed that when I was younger I was naturally inclined to the things I was curious about, but now with all this stress of being an adult, I noticed it slowly vanish. I just wanted to express my great appreciation to you for reminding me of my childhood and to follow my curiosity!
I like this series, it seems like it pops up in my feed at the right time when i start feeling like the grass is greener on the other side (big company)...
Just coming upon this video whole searching for a good message for a friend. Such an excellent message that I can resonate with as an immigrant child. Very well put together message. Kudos!
I gave up on Corp for a bit bc of circumstance, layoff, didn't get mentorship quality / growth I wanted. So wanted to work on my own thing. Applied for yc, didn't get in first time but will keep trying.
I have no particular comment to give, but just wanted to give encouragement :) Great to hear these feelings and situations vocalized.
Hey Amy and Jenny, this is super enjoyable to watch!! I’m a software engineer building his startup (solo for now) and I feel so reflected on your videos, so please keep going! 🤗
Your channel is o lovely and niche. I relate to quite well in many ways! From an entrepreneur perspective, I'd be interested in hearing more about how you keep your relationships strong at notion. My most recent experience is with a failed start-up and our communication isn't on the greatest terms.
