The Old Whangamomona Road WITH the camper trailer! They warned us not to!
Переглядів 19 тис.Рік тому
The Old Whangamomona Road is an unmaintained paper road suitable for 4x4 vehicles. It follows the Whangamomona River and passes through native bush with two old hand-dug tunnels on the way. Its about 11km and takes you from Whangamomona Hotel to the Bridge to Somewhere. Mud terrain tyres and a winch are highly recommended. Don’t forget to stop at the Whangamomona Hotel and make a donation to th...

Fuck that for a joke 😆macetown track and muzzle station had me puckering without the mud, and these tracks look skinnier!
Was certainly a fun track but yea, there were a few spots I held my breath haha. We’re heading down to South Island in a few weeks time… Macetown is on the list! Cheers for watching 👍🏻
Just to add a bit of history to the whanga Rd i use to maintain that rd when it was farmed ,u use to be able too drive a 2wd car down their then before the bridges were redone it waz our main access the settlers of origin put many back breaking hrs into its upkeep in maintaining the culvets and water tables so it would be to a high standard ,with a shovel, and i hate to say but it is the off roaders that shagged it then and continue to do so by the look of it.
Thanks for watching and always good to hear history info from someone personally involved with it. The local 4wd clubs do alot of track maintenance on it and I understand its now in better shape from when this video was done a few years ago. Track closure over the winter months are a good thing as well for it
I've brought my Outback Touring rig (4WD with lightweight off-road pod trailer) over from OZ and now starting to explore NZ. So I'm interested to see how a local with a similar (perhaps heavier) set-up, navigates remote Aotearoa terrain.
Hey mate. Compared to aussie, you might be a bit bored with what NZ offers track wise. Check out the overland navigator app… has pretty much all the nz tracks on there mate. See you out there 👍🏻
Hats off to the guy towing the trailer. I do a fair bit of towing offroad myself, and adding a camper trailer just puts you in a whole different league of offroading. He did a great job.👍
Thanks mate appreciate it! Yea the trailer makes it fairly challenging through a slippery track like that one. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
Wow that SAF is mean
@@tonynz2024 thanks mate 🫡
Hey mate nice video, just wondering where is the track at the end of the video, very nice place to do some sand driving.
Cheers mate. It was a track near Glinks Gully 👍🏻
cool rig man, pretty much what i would do,awsome!
Thanks mate 👍🏻
cool video bro! its good to see some northland stuff,im local and just bought a 4x4 so awsome to see some tracks i can hit, i have a couple of questions if you don't mind, what model drone are you using? and did you drop the tyre prseesure to get up to the light house? cheers man!
Cheers man. Its a DJI Air 2S. And yea dropped the pressures down to around 18psi. Thanks for watching mate 👍🏻
@@karlmartinovich cheers man! i better get me a compressor before i head up there😂
That was a bloody mint video bro 🤙🏾
Thanks man appreciate it! Cheers for watching 🤙🏻
Thanks, Karl, It's a cool video, I enjoyed it a lot. Inspired me to do the trip also. Would like to know what your Cruiser is and a bit about it.
Cheers mate and thanks for watching! Theres an awkward walkthrough on the cruiser in my other videos 👍🏻
You’re a legend mate awesome filming and commentary. I’m amazed you didn’t get lost a few times. Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺🍺😀😀
@@gregreed402cheers man thanks for watching 🤙🏻
Stunning drone video.
Awesome video.
Thanks for watching mate 👍🏻
Te Paki Stream to Pouto Lighthouse! That's quiet a distance, well done!
Thanks mate. Did it over 3 days. Cheers for watching 👌🏻
Ohhhh yessss guysss
From the uk all ours are closed also and it's now boring Yorkshire and derbyshire is dead of tourists now so the question is this can your authority's police them ours can t plus the fines if you get caught ain't thst big we call it greenlaning don't run scared like the green laners did in the uk carry on I say good luck
Hey mate. Some of our tracks over here have winter closures like this one which our 4wd community is happy to respect. If we continued to go in when theyre closed over winter, they would end up destroyed due to their soil type and become impassable for anything other than highly modified comp trucks. Its not too inconvenient though as theres plenty of other tracks here that are open all year round. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
Thanks mate yourve just given me my next adventure
Cheers for watching mate. Keep in mind the tracks closed over winter and normally re-opens at labour weekend 👍🏻
Hey mate thinking of taking this exact route, did you have your trip mapped out so me and my group would have something to follow im also in a 2.8 Paj so should be mean cheers
Hey mate, nah I didnt really have a plan or a map as I know that area pretty well and been going there for years. As long as you’re not on the beach 2-3 hours each side of high tide youll be fine
what size tyres is the little zuk on?
Hey mate, 30” tractor tyres on that one. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
My uncle used to drive logging trucks into that area from the Owhango end. He said the first truck in in the morning always took a rifle on board to shoot Deer that were on the road. This was about 80 years ago.
Yea would’ve been full of deer back then! Still the odd one running across the track. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
Mean video bro!
Thanks man. Cheers for watching!
Thanks for the heads up to these musicians, very nice. Cool day trip too!
Yea im keen to head up there again soon and see if its changed much. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Great trip! Can you do this solo if you have a good 4wd? Cheers
Thanks mate. Yep I do it solo often. 3 hours each side of low tide is best 👍🏻
beautiful spot mate- Great job with the camera! Give me a invite next time and ill bring my safari out!
Awesome! Thanks for watching mate
How far from the end you entered to the slip if you dont mind me asking? Cheers for the awesome footage
Thanks mate. Not sure of the exact distance but the slip is closer to the owhango end. We went in from the Kapoors Rd end
Thanks so much. A part of the land I've always wanted to have a look at
Yes it sure is beautiful up there and very fortunate to be shown around by the Kaitaia 4wd Club. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Great contribution to the wreaking of the track doing it when so wet.
People like you really make me laugh aye. Thinking theyre an expert but genuinely have no idea haha. Dont buy into the headline champ… we were given lots of advice and encouragement by the locals who actually maintain the track so no need to worry your small mind over it 😂
Hey Karl, what entry do you use to access the beach? And is there a good places close by the entry behind the dunes to camp? Cheers
You can access the beach at Baylys Beach, Glinks Gully or at the end of Pouto Rd. You can camp anywhere just be respectful of the area and take your rubbish with you. I accesed the beach in this vid at Mahuta Gap but thats now closed
Great video Karl and some great modifications. You've got a great looking vehicle and good to hear that your happy with its performance too.
Maybe if you did some commentary about where you are and what your doing , you know share some info on your adventures , how the trucks are doing what you break what you like what you dont like , capture your audience with some information and engagement , finally just be careful using with your playback selection might find yourself in some un wanted trouble for breaching copyright .Glad to see you are having fun
Yep all vaild points. This ones 5 or 6 years old and back then we only really put the videos up for our mates and as memories. The more recent vids are starting to have our voices on them as we build more confidence haha. Thanks for commenting and watching 👍🏻
@@karlmartinovich And good memories they are nothing like getting out and exploring mate keep it up hopefully we will see more of you and the mates out and about👍
Geez, what a thriller! It reminded of the 1977 movie "Sorcerer."
Why do you have to have music. It spoils the whole effect.
Because we like music. Thanks for watching anyway
Rear bumper must have. Swing out gery cans rack and spare tyre.
Yes eventually. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Hey great vid chap and awesome rig too great to see a build up on a 200 here in nz ive just got one older model 2007 with 2inch lift but no can tell me why when i turn into a corner at certain speeds or could be camber of corner tightness the abs comes on ive taken it into masterton toyota and basically told me its too heavly modified for them to touch rung toyota nz they said the same im frustrated cause i love the truck apart from that what do i do . I see you have added kdss drop is that maybe what i need or control arms to complete the package my truck does sit up at rear and its sitting on 20 inch rims and 33 s im putting it out there helppppp cheers Buck
Hey man, cheers for watching! Not sure that adding adjustable uca’s or a kdss drop would help with an abs issue? But adding them is a good idea on these with 2inch or higher lifts. The uca’s help with getting the wheel alignment geometry in the vehicle correct again so its handles and drives as its meant too. Might be better talking to a workshop that specializes in modified 200s rather than toyota… Trundles in Taranaki would be a good place to start. Good luck man 👍🏻
@@karlmartinovich cheers for the reply and in site that's a million times more than a registered dealership has given me thanks heaps cheers Buck
Great to see you’ve come over from the dark side to a 200 now I met you and your family a couple of Christmas’s ago I was towing a Kimberly with my 200 Enjoy your episodes 👍
Yes I remember you mate. Ive still got the old nissan and love what its capable of. But jeez the 200 is so bloody comfortable to drive compared to it haha. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
Great video. How are these mud tires for daily drive. Thanks
Ive only put about 4000kms on them now but have found them awesome so far in all conditions. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Grew up in Whanga. Me and my brothers would go camping/hunting /eeling way up the back of Whanga road. On our pushbikes. And go rafting down the river after floods. Was a slog in that thick mud. Brings back memories.
Was certainly a beautiful area to explore 👍🏻
At 0:22 was that the axles on the first bounce and the CVs on the second one? hahaha. 3:10 I bet you were all concentrating down that. I hate that kind of mud, especially through a gorge with big drops like that.
Haha! Yea those step dropoffs definitely made the heart beat a bit faster! Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Hi, do you think I will be able to drive with a 2wd Ranger there. really want to go camp there. I know I won't be able to drive all the way up to the light house with a 2wd.
Hey mate, the beach is really firm 2 hours either side of low tide. I used to go up and down that beach when I was a kid in a 2wd car so youll be sweet as 👍🏻
@karlmartinovich thanks for the reply. I will definitely go drive and have a look
Mint looking track. oldmate in cruiser needs to follow ruts bit more maybe put tape on centre of his steering wheel 😆 no point in fighting it. Good content 👌
A typical cruiser driver haha. But jokes aside, that track was so bloody slippery in some areas that it was hard to know which way your wheels were even pointing. Cheers for watching mate 👍🏻
Love your work mate!
Thanks man. Cheers for watching 🤙🏻
Awesome spot in the t tree I want to do this 1 day
There’s hundreds of those t tree spots along the beach. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Can you do a rig rundown on youre gq that would be a cool vid i recon 🫡
Cheers mate yea could do. The gq is actually having a bit of work done on it at moment and should be back on the road around xmas 🤙🏻
@@karlmartinovich what u getting done mate ?
@@Dylan_Harley just a freshen up on the engine and a bit of wiring. Typical nissan stuff mate haha
Wow! Fantastic muddy track ... narrow with same decent looking drop-offs. Well done! And a good run down of your specs in that cruiser ;-)
Yea not a lot of room for error next to those drop offs! Thanks for watching 👌🏻
strange that you missed the ROAD CLOSED sign
The road closed sign is permanently up 365 days a year to deter muppets according to the locals. The track has a proper closure over winter though and opens again after labour weekend 👍🏻
@@karlmartinovich 🤣good track tho, but wouldn't have taken a trailer thru
@@karlmartinovich took 3 of us 8 hours to get thru earlier in the year, a lot of winching, the track was worse then

Great footage. Can you keep going round the beach and get off at Pouto Point?
Thanks mate. Yep you can which puts you at the end of Pouto Rd 👍🏻
Can I ask what trails these are?
Hey mate, Takahue Saddle is apparently closed due to a slip. The beach was 90 mile beach which is easy to access from Ahipara 👍🏻
Is it possible to tow a offroad caravan along 90 mile Beach?
@@leithrongonui5186 Yes, if you have a very capable 4x4 and the balls and brains to use it. Most people will have an incident trying things like this though..
some good technical drives there - full credit. I imagine the cleanup took some time!
Haha yea it did mate. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
great vid Karl. Yeah Time lapse was awesome. thanks
Thanks mate. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
I would have put aggressive snow chains on. Thanks for sharing.
Nah chains destroy mud tracks. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
@@karlmartinovichWe use chains on the farm and they do FAR LESS damage than what you guys are doing ! Just saying.
