Trying the Tesla Magic Dock on the KIA EV9 Land AWD
After 2 months with the Kia EV9 Land AWD I learned that there are now Tesla Superchargers with CCS Magic docs at the Bucees in Bastrop Texas. This is a game changer for me as there has been no reliable charging between Seguin and Caldwell until now.
Charging was so easy. Started in the Tesla app, after identifying the stall I was at. The max charging speed I was able to get was 83.4kw. This was likely dude to the Kia/Hundunai architecture difference. I spoke with the driver of a Hummer EV SUV that was charging and he was pulling over 200Kw. I only tried the V4 Supercharger today and will try the V3 next time to see if the results are similar.

EV and Charging in Seguin update

I traded in my Ioniq 6 for a Kia EV 9 Land AWD so that is have enough room for the dogs. I still have tons of range and fast charging so I'm super happy and impressed with this vehicle. Seguin Texas got a new DC fast charger turned on at Circle K right on IH 10.

Ioniq 6 charging 16% to 100%

Today I drove to Caldwell Texas to pick up my kiddo. There is no charging in Caldwell so I had to get to 100% before setting off. I did have a talk with Yves Charles of Hertz rent a car about @outofspecdave1554 and his poor experience renting a Polestar 2. I forgot to mention since I had passed the 30 minute free charging I was charged $3.11 for the power delivered after 30 minutes. Next time I...

Disappointing results hopefully when kia gets full official support we will get better numbers.
Did you subscribe to get the Tesla rate?
Buc’ees!!!!!! Love it
84 kW is not too impressive, but my understanding is the eGMP cars will top out around 100 kW and it's not going to be completely consistent from model to model. Some superchargers will top out at more like 45 kW so it could be worse. It will be interesting to see if Hyundai/Kia do something about this or if the Tesla superchargers get updated to handle the 800 V architecture cars. My guess is this will be the norm for the next 4 years or so unless Hyundai/Kia does something.
Yea I'll take 84kw over 5 kw any day because there are no other really good options between Seguin and Caldwell.
84.3 come on, I own both a M3 and a EV9. So sad; at 15 minute mark is that a rt sided steering wheel???
It's not a great speed but the important thing is it works. The options for CCS charging in Central Texas are incredibly bad. I don't know why it showed my image mirrored. It is not a right side wheel.
@@branchmsyou need to make a setting change to flip it when using the selfie cam.
Please come back with 20% left to see what charge speed r u getting. I’m considering to get the ev9
On a supercharger I don't think I'll get more thank the 84kw. Now on Electrify America I get 220kw 😎
@@branchmskinda sucks that the EV9 doesn't get the same charging speeds as the other EGMP cars already out there. I'm getting used to waiting 18 mins but if I get the EV9 then that same wait will now be 25 mins. I know the battery is larger tho but the voltage is weaker.
Even though you were plugged in to a "V4" dispenser, nearly all of those in North America are still connected to V3 charging cabinets, so only support 400V. Thus with the 800V EGMP products, you're limited to Hyundai/Kia's wonky way of doing 400V conversion that severely limits your maximum charge rate. GM does it differently, so the Hummer could pull far more from it.
Totally makes sense. I wish it was faster on Tesla but I'm happy it works.
If you push the + on the top right of AC display that will expand you view and see more AC functions that way. The minimize whenever you're done. Hope you can make another vid explain to folks. Everyone always misses that.
You make a good point. I'll make a video about the in screen and off screen controls in the EV9
Good video. Unfotunately, the first generation of the E-GMP vehicles use the rear motor to charge on 400V chargers, so in essence, the same as regen. Therefore, the maximum speeds are around 97kW. A big oversight on the part of Kia/Hyundai. However, I hear the next generation should be able to get at least 150kW on V3 chargers. And of course, they should get the full speeds once Tesla upgrades the actual chargers connected to those V4's.
Using the rear motor windings/inverter power electronics as a boost converter is actually an amazing Idea. Most of the other 800v cars have discrete boost converters, topping out in the 50-60kw range. So E-GMP is well ahead of the curve when it comes to charging an 800v car on a 400v dispenser since they are in the 90+ kw range.
@@jakekiedaisch2279 So you call charging at 97kW of 400V chargers versus 250kW an advanced technology? When others simply either split the 800V pack in two when charging on 400V chargers, or are 400V vehicles with two packs and combine them when charging on 800V chargers to get those 350kW plus charging speeds -- yet still get over 200kW on 400V chargers.
@@junehanzawa5165 Yes. As an EE who specialises in power electronics, I can tell you that a 230kw Boost converter is both expensive and would generate a not insignificant heat load on the vehicle's cooling loops. The E-GMP vehicles already hit thermal limits when charging fast, so a high power converter and the waste heat associated with it would certainly boost charge speeds, but not as much as you may hope. Through this clever engineering they are both reducing the BOM cost of the vehicle, and providing better 400v charging than their competitors. Since most chargers are 800v and tesla is rolling out 1000v capable superchargers, it will be increasingly unlikely that you have to charge on a 400v dispenser. Also Boo hoo, you only get 100kw on the rare occasion you have to charge on a 400v dispenser. Nevermind that many competitors peak around the 150Kw mark and only exceed 100Kw for the bottom 50% of their packs.
I live in MA and there's quite a few charging locations. I am sad to see states that are much larger, like TX, don't take charging infrastructure seriously. One way or the other the future is EV, and even people who value money should see the $ signs. Heck it's Texas, they could install solar in a random area nobody cares about and still charge by the kW.
That’s great. Glad to see more around San Antonio.
when hyundai tucson 2025 facelift gonna get OTA updates
Does the free 30 min charging have any mile cap? Like does it expire after 15,000 miles or is it truly "unlimited" If I go for 29 minutes, then 29 minutes again, will I get charged or will it still be free? Thanks :)
They have started imposing limits. You can charge for 30 minutes and the wait an hour and then charge again. It's unlimited otherwise but only for 2 years. Kia comes with 1000kwh free not 30 minute sessions
I’m so jealous of your charging speed, my 2021 Ioniq EV gets 38 kWh max.
I traded to the EV9 and it only charges at 210kw
That's my exact sled. Nice ride. 🤙 Wish we had the Freewires here in San Diego SoCal.
6:24 - 42min at a 350kW charging station? Or did the charging station have less power? I think Hyundai promises 18min at 350kW. Btw that black with the dark tint is on point for your Ioniq. Still wrestling with color choice if I get one someday - all colors look awesome on that sled!
Got one! 😁
So exciting!!
that's to 80%, not 100.
3.2 mi/kWh is a good efficiency. At what speeds were you driving to get that value? Was the AC running? I have a 2023 Ioniq 5 SEL. At 70 mph, the efficiency runs about 2.6 mi/kWh; at 80 mph, about 2.2 mi/kWh. The temperature when testing at those speeds was around 45 degF. Thanks for the info.
Likely between 40-70 with a mix of highway and city driving.
Did you get charged for going over 30 minutes?
I did, it about $1.20 but worth it to learn that
Is there an app for them? How do you pay? Bc I just came across one for the first time.
I used the EV Connect app
@@branchms thanks. There’s like so many apps lol.
Can it use the new standard connection without using an adapter?
It has a CCS connection on it. They do not have Tesla plugs yet.
@@branchms I sure hope they retool that right away so this one will be ready for the new standard. Thanks for the reply. *Cheers
So how long did it take to from 16% to 100% you didn't say?
I re watched this and noticed the same. It took 45 minutes. Getting to 80 % is easy. It's the last 20 percent that take a long time. That's why I usually only go to 100% at home but I was in a hurry.
My BIG question is WHY.................are you charging from 75% to 90%.. Wasted time for click bait. No thanks.
Simply to test the charger. I had never used a Freewire before.
I truly get 10%-80% in 18 minutes on mine. I super charge when I go grocery charging so I have rush each time to stop at 80. The curve slows down by then so I let it go to 90% if I need to buy time. I’ve only charged to 100% a couple of times…will try to avoid it at all costs.
me too
You can set it to where it will automatically stop at 80
I rolled the dice on the "15 minutes" OTA update while waiting in a cell phone lot for a flight to arrive.... 25 minutes later and driving away from the airport with no navigation system as it continued to reboot, I was regretting the choice! Luckily it only took another few minutes and we didn't get lost in deepest Connecticut. Looking forward to trying out the improved route planner soon... seems like it might almost be useful now, especially with cold weather arriving and pre-conditioning entering the equation.
I'm a huge fan of these cars. Mine took quite a while. How do you like the new sounds of nature?
Thanks for the truth about the charging infrastructure in Texas. I have a Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 that I charge at home. One charges at night while we sleep via a Level 2 and the other one charges from a solar powered level 1 during the day. The daily commute is 150 miles and they are perfect for this. I have a Mercedes’ GL450 gas hog for road trips until there are more chargers available.
We have a Bolt and my Ioniq 6. She usually charges level 1 for work and I charge free at work once a week since I work and live in the same town. I usually don't get so frustrated but I got cranky in Saturday about charger availability and don't get me started about south of IH10

Eighteen months in the Ioniq 5 and I *still* haven't tested it on a Freewire 🤦 They all just seem to be in awkward places around the Northeast. Thanks for getting the data!
We used one last weekend and got around 98kw on our Ioniq 5.
How is Texas the Northeast?
@@LarryRichelli It's not. Boston is, however, and that's where I live, hence my appreciation for this report from Texas.
Our upgraded local EA got a little bit frisky last month and pushed 247kW briefly, which was the highest I've seen the Ioniq 5 go. Yours had a much steadier ramp and satisfyingly held it well into the 50%+ range... none of this briefly hit 250kW but taper at 15-20% nonsense from the Koreans!
You identified the same "problem" we have with the EGMP platform (Ioniq 5, for us): meal stops are now rushed! Appreciate the update from Seguin (and the education on how to pronounce same :-) It's great to see the new hardware going in, which has been rock solid for us in the Northeast so far, but hotels are certainly an odd place to drop these... still, there aren't enough of them at the moment, so we won't be too picky!

When I was stationed there there was a social consensus that the road going onto base was one of the most dangerous roads in America, in terms of accidents. Who knows if statistically true, but I can certainly attest. I remember that funny Tony's sign omg! What a trip down memory lane!
