Fly Fishing in Remote Alaska: Silver Salmon, Sea Bass, and Trolling for Halibut
The first week of September I was invited up to Alaska to film at The Phoenix Lodge as we fly fished for silver salmon and sea bass, and trolled for halibut. It did not disappoint! As you guys know I spend most of my time fly fishing in high-alpine lakes for different species of trout, so hooking into a 27", 20-somethin' pound silver salmon fresh out of the ocean on my 6 WT fly rod was as exciting as it gets. As I am typing this looking out my window at snow, I recognize winter is setting in, but I am already looking forward to the next time I get to visit Alaska.

Dry Dropper Fly Fishing, Big Tiger Trout (for the Uinta Mountains), and Beautiful Scenery

I am trying to catch fish out of as many lakes as possible, but there are a handful that I enjoy so much that I try to make a trip to visit them each year. I caught my personal best tiger trout (this year), got reminded that I need to do more cardio, and enjoyed some solitude and amazing views in this weeks video. Family Fishing, Teardrop Camping, and Monsoon Thunderstorms in Utah's Mountains
Переглядів 1653 місяці тому
It's about time! The monsoon thunderstorms in Utah this year were waiting until the last few weeks of summer to decide to show up, but boy they came in big! In the last week we have received several inches of rain, watched a few great thunderstorms, and enjoyed the cooler temperatures. The timing of all of this started while we were up in the Uintas on a little camp out.

Taylor and I enjoyed a quick date up into the mountains. We took the horses on a pretty popular trail and saw around 75 people on a weekday afternoon I was surprised to see that many, but I guess it was the last week of summer for many people before they head back to school, and like us, they were trying to enjoy the last days of summer. What was nice though is we were able to find a lake that ...

The title should give you a pretty good idea, but for those of you who read the descriptions I suppose I will add a little bit more. Originally we had a horse trip planned for this video, but my sister and her husband welcomed their baby into this world a couple weeks earlier than expected, so this turned into a shorter overnight trip that was a lot of fun. The five of us caught dozens of fish ...

I am enjoying choosing lakes on Google Earth that I know little about and seeing how they turn out to be. Sometimes they're a hit, sometimes they're a miss. In this video I head to a lake that historically had some of the largest brook trout in the Uintas, but also has a tendency to winterkill.
Larger Than Expected Cutthroat Trout, Mountain Goats, and Horses in Utah's Mountains

In today's video we didn't plan on a location beforehand. I randomly picked a lake we hadn't been to before on Google Earth as we were driving up. Not knowing really what to expect I wasn't sure how the fishing or trail would be. It paid off with larger than expected cutthroat trout, several mountain goats, beautiful views, and perfect swimming water temperatures. This video was shot on a Sony ...

In this video I make a quick solo afternoon trip up to a nice little lake in the Uintas with brook trout. Last summer I visited this lake and got skunked so I had to go back to redeem myself. This video was shot on a Sony FX3 with a 24-70 GM II and a GoPro Hero 11.

It didn't register in my mind that this was Dad's birthday when we were planning this quick day trip up into the Uintas. But I can't think of a better way he would have wanted to spend it than with his favorite child and a couple of his friends riding horses in the mountains and fly fishing for brookies, tigers, and cutthroat trout. Every Sunday morning my I-Phone sends me a notification of my screen time for the past week. Sometimes I am pleased, but most of the time I think to myself "wow, I wasted that much time on my phone"? The idea we had for this commercial was to remind us (myself included) to be present where you're at. Beautiful place. Great to see you have some company tag along.
Rudy (the dog) is pretty good company most of the time!
Incredible cinematography‼️I’m trying to get to your level. What cameras are you using?
@@GillsNReelsFishing thanks! Glad you like it. I own a video production business and that’s my full time job, mainly videos for businesses, events, real estate, social media, etc. I make these UA-cam videos for passion projects more than anything. The reason I say that is because with just about any camera made on the past few years you’ll be able to get similar shots with if you’ve got the right eye and practice with it a little bit. That being said the camera for all of these videos this year has been the Sony FX3 and a variety of lenses, with a GoPro hero 11 as well. Hope that helps!
@@ImDJEvans This does help thank you‼️With your video production background maybe you could point me in the right direction on a good starter camera. I was thinking it would be best to get a full frame mirrorless camera with a flip screen. I was looking into the Sony A6400 or maybe an A7iii but with a young family and doing my channel as a passion project and not full time job, I can’t afford an AS7iii or the like. Just looking for a good base and suggestions for a good all around lens to start with for my UA-cam fishing channel. I’d love to get some advice if you have the time. Thank you DJ. Keep up the great work. Your channel is going to flourish give it time.
@@GillsNReelsFishing When I was just starting out I would buy my equipment used on KSL Classifieds or sometimes Facebook marketplace. I've got an A7siii that is a great camera, the main reason why I would recommend it is because it has something called a "dual gain" or "dual native" ISO. With almost any other camera the higher you go in ISO, the more grain you will get in your video--which isn't a problem until it reaches a certain point, but being outdoors there are quite a bit of times where I've been filming in very little light, so what that camera allows you to do is go to the second native ISO of 12,800 with no noise at all. So even in blue hour I will usually be at 12,800 and not get any noise at all, where as with most other cameras that would be pretty noisy footage. If you couldn't find one of those ones used at a decent price the a7r series are good as well. I would look into getting good lenses over a higher priced camera body. A 24-105 would be a good focal length that covers wide angle but also lets you zoom in a little bit as well. You could find one of those used as well.
@@ImDJEvans Wow thank you 🤯 Great information. I’m going to look into those recommendations. I appreciate your time.
@@GillsNReelsFishing for sure, happy to help.
Bro, keep going. With your videography, you'll rack up subs in no time.
Thank you! I appreciate the kind comment.
Who do you drag along to do your camera work, DJ? Looked like it was a beautiful day. I remember years ago that you were criticized for telling your location. Is this why you don't identify the lake you are at?
@@dwelker3778 on this video it was just me doing the camera work. On the last one my wife filmed a little while I was on the horse. There are some lakes that are obvious and I don’t try to make it difficult to find out where I am, mainly roadside lakes. But there are a handful I really enjoy going to and I seldomly see other people and I try my best to make it harder to tell where I am. Maybe it’s egotistical to think that my little video would make it so hoards of people visit a spot, but who knows 😂 I’m happy to visit those places with people, but most of my friends only have weekends available and sometimes I go up short notice, so usually I go up alone.
@@ImDJEvans I understand your position. I feel the same way, even though I usually go to places that are know. I go out into nature to be alone, not with a group of unknown people (especially if they don't really respect the area.) Thanks for sharing your videos.
