As an audience, we love gangsters. We love crime thrillers psychopaths and villainous origin stories. The Hero's Journey has been traversed many times, and watching the same good-guy story play out repeatedly can get tedious. We want a character who does the wrong thing but for the right reasons. We want a character who loses their marbles, commits a crime, makes mistakes, wreaks revenge, contradicts themselves, and changes their mind. These are what are known as antiheroes. To get a better feel for the intricacies of the antihero, we’re going to deep dive into three different examples, and examine ways in which they crossover: Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, Lou Bloom from Nightcrawler, and Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver.
