This is my project 99 Silverado which was originally a 4.6 V6 RCLB 4x4 Manual that I swapped out for a 2004 LR4 4.8 and have built from the ground up. This video is a quick rundown of the things I think are obvious pros and cons of the having a cammed 4.8 in my daily.

There are many in depth forum...

    Nice video man I am looking to buy a truck soon and def think I will end up having to swap a v8 in. I would love to find a 4.8 5spd already done

      Would be a lot cleaner and easier to have a 4.8 already done up and ready to go. They were common back a few years ago still but people have used them as there intended purposes as trucks, and they’re getting to be fewer and fewer that are worth the money to get road ready. The V6’s tended to be a bit more common, at least in my experience. They do come up in either engine size every once in a while, hope you find one they’re a fun ride and just cool.

    I bought a Ford 2000 almost 40 years ago. Its been a great machine. Mine has the front end loader. The power steering makes driving with a bucket load easy. It is very handy and helps with my fire wood collecting. Good Luck, Rick

    It's odd you claim your gas mileage went down 2-3 mpg. I've done several of my trucks and they all consistently have picked up 2-3 mpg with cam, headers, and tune. Also if you'll bite the bullet and do a truetrac you'll never break that rear end again. I beat the heck out of one of mine with a ls3 stroker and it never gave any problems.

    • @FiveSpeedGarage
      @FiveSpeedGarage 3 місяці тому

      @@heathcarr1105 I definitely see where you come from and I 100% agree you can maintain or increase stock fuel mileage but I’m just giving a base off of what people usually can expect by what I’ve gathered from others with the Texas speed 220R cams in these trucks. My truck can’t log fuel mileage so i don’t know for sure what I’m getting. But the person on a budget who wants it to run well and drive nice that doesn’t have a tune that is near perfect is going to miss out on some of the gains obviously, it’s also a part of driving habits. But I’m just giving input on what I’ve personally seen in daily drivers. I’ll definitely look into the truetrac thing for my next upgrade thanks for the comment.

    i am a newbee who has 5 acres of land I want to work. I am looking at getting this tractor. Just bought the shop manuals for it. Is there any particular years or options that you would recommend? how are parts availability and cost? thanks. Any weak points on them I should look for when buying? Also what is a good price? thanks

    • @FiveSpeedGarage
      @FiveSpeedGarage 3 місяці тому

      @@narcissistinjurygiver2932 would not worry about the years, all later models are same. Parts availability is good, you can buy rebuild kits online, most machine shops have seen these industrial fords before as well, and the new Holland dealers have been good around me for having parts in stock of getting them ordered in quickly. Prices are reasonable for a diesel, filters and such are the same price as most other tractors. Not much that can go wrong on these, very simple. When you go to view one of these you want to see it cold if possible, not started prior. They are usually a very easy starting tractor and don’t need starting fluid. But When they’re worn out you can crank and crank and then they’ll fire eventually and usually start easy all day once warmed up. Price wise, look at the condition of the tractor and the amount of hours it has. It’s going to be different depending on where you are. Look at the market value and assess the one you want. This one we paid 8,000 CAD and at the time it was at the high end of what they sold for, but it is a nicer one. Diesel models will always sell for more. Hope this can help, if you still have any questions feel free to ask.

    I hv a 2000 Silverado v6 5 speed manual and I plan to swap to a 5.3 v8. Will I be able to use my same transmission and also will I have to have it tuned because you mentioned something about it being automatic tuned to the engine or will it be ok

    • @FiveSpeedGarage
      @FiveSpeedGarage 5 місяців тому

      The 5.3 is a tad bit different on the crank if I recall. They never sold the 5.3 with a nv3500 so you will have to get the corresponding part numbers for the flywheel and clutch. There is enough aftermarket support it shouldn’t be an issue. I would just double check to be certain to make sure everything fits as it should. As far as the slave cylinder I don’t know if there is a major difference but again I opted to go with matching parts (I bought the clutch pack and slave as a package on rock auto) to make sure it wouldn’t have any issues. I would check the part numbers and if they are different I would change it out for the specified motor. As far as the tune you will need to do it yourself or get someone to do it to adjust for changes in idle and acceleration as well as the functions the engine preforms when it has an auto vs a manual trans. It’s pretty simple and lots of tutorials on UA-cam.

Originally was a 4.3 v6 like yours I got a 2005 Silverado and an engine off a 2005 so the wiring would fit right but I can’t turn the truck on without jumping the start , did you run into this issue ? I was told a neutral safety switch or something like that

      I had the same issue, I never did find out what it was yet. I just ran a wire with a push button switch to the starter. Not ideal but works as theft prevention. On a serious note however I would check the wiring diagrams, see if your getting a signal to the relay. I kinda ruled it out to be a BCM issue with the swap but I haven’t had a chance to look into it fully. It would be worth looking into the Silverado forums as lots of people have done these swaps, it will at least point you in a direction. I would check any safety switches as it could definitely be a factor. I know this isn’t really an answer but as I said I haven’t played with it since, sorry. Hope you find a way to solve it.

      I did not hook up the AC yet, the compressors are different if I recall. I do know some of the hoses were different sizes between the two. But there is a 5 year difference between the two trucks. But the V8 and the V6 compressors are mounted differently so you would have to do some changes to the system to make sure everything fits right. Hope that helps.

    We bought a new Ford 2000, with the Selecto-speed transmission, in 1965 (I think it was) and used it for raking hay and buzzsawing stove wood at the ranch in Montana until 2000 when we sold the place. It was super reliable, had power steering that gave it a tight turning radios, an lots of choices to help find the perfect gear for the job at hand.
