LUSTVOLL An evening about pleasure Indulgence, enjoyment, hunger, lust, and desire. Pleasure (german: lust) knows many synonyms. For children, it is omnipresent, while adults have learned to suppress it: they only allow themselves to indulge in pleasure in socially acceptable doses, behind closed doors or in the form of stimulants and addictive substances. But who or what actually determines wh...

What, do you tremble? Are you all afraid? Alas, I blame you not, for you are mortal, And mortal eyes cannot endure the devil.- Avaunt, thou dreadful minister of hell. Thou hadst but power over his mortal body; His soul thou canst not have. Therefore begone. Foul devil, for God’s sake, hence, and trouble us not, For thou hast made the happy earth thy hell, Filled it with cursing cries and deep exclaims. If thou delight to view thy heinous deeds, Behold this pattern of thy butcheries. (She points to the corpse) O, gentlemen, see, see dead Henry’s wounds Open their congealed mouths and bleed afresh!- Blush, blush, thou lump of foul deformity, For ’tis thy presence that exhales this blood From cold and empty veins where no blood dwells. Thy deeds, inhuman and unnatural, Provokes this deluge most unnatural.- O God, which this blood mad’st, revenge his death! O earth, which this blood drink’st revenge his death! Either heaven with lightning strike the murderer dead, Or earth gape open wide and eat him quick, As thou dost swallow up this good king’s blood, Which his hell-governed arm hath butcherèd!

I would recommend scansion if you have not already scaned the text. That will greatly improve phrasing and emphasis. John Barton's Playing Shakespeare would be a useful tool here.

Gracie West Thank you for your suggestion. Scanion is important for understanding the many nuances of Shakespeare and his contemporary's Verse. I am aware of the technique and used it in preparation for this monologue. You can hear the iambic pentameter for most of the monologue.

I wouldn't say this is over done, I feel that the intention is very clear. But I could sense some tension half way through and towards the end that may have caused it too look "over done". You have a lovely grip on the understanding of the monologue, and I liked the playful approach.

There is much good work here and it has emotional truth, but, for example, we get " endure the devil" with the stress on devil.which is not the sense. This implies that other things can be endured. Better sense in " endure the devil" with endure stressed. There are two components to any acting with the heart giving us the emotional truth and the head controlling those skills we have in using the language. These are tiny things and might be due to cultural difference. I am English and Victoria is American. I have played Shakespeare in America and such difference exist. I am currently putting together a collection of pieces for an informal celebration of the 400 years a little later in the year. Helps living ten miles from Stratford upon Avon.

Phrasing and emphasis seems off key at times.

Thank you for your comments and critic. I understand that one may say it is overdone at times - and to a certain extent I also feel it is overdone. 2 points that may change the way the monologue is viewed: 1) The monologue was filmed for the purpose of an online audition for a stage performance with a large audience and auditorium - stage and film acting differ in this regard greatly. 2) The work is greatly influenced by Austrian stage acting which is much more open, visual and expressive than North American/British acting. Coming from a Canadian theatrical background there are parts that, as I said, I feel are overdone. Normally, I would have held back a bit more. BUT when compared to what Austrian Theatres expect and what I have seen here, this monologue is by no means overdone, one could even say there would be room for more.

I liked your acting, although I think at some point you’ve overdone it. I wasn’t so fond of the speech itself. It just… seemed very artificial to me. It didn’t come natural, which is of course because it is hard to do Shakespeare’s Early Modern English in a convincing way. So that part was… okay, but there’s still some way for improvement. Sorry for pass you some criticism, but I for me that’s always the most helpful. Anyway: Your performance wasn’t bad. It was good. And I liked it. :)
