This video us from Television Station KGW Channel 8 in Portland,OR. 9/17/13. A News clip about an enthusiastic woman who counts fish for a living and Loves her job!! A little too much!! Enjoy!!
30 years later and the infrastructure still looks like hot garbage... Damn I wish our state actually cared about its people
Those BIG WHITE BOXES in parking lots were newspaper recycled boxes as back then everyone still got the news in the daily papers.
My man Peter had a CRX 👏🏼👍🏻. Man I had forgotten about that water slide and what used to be the new hamburger joint I think it was HOT N NOW? what a fun memory to see. Thank you 🙏🏼
I worked at the Roths and remember the construction.
My childhood best friend Don worked at Geppetos pizza. 2:32 RIP dude.
clearly this dude doesn’t know how to hold a camera
Market st
Regular gas was 69 cents per gallon (2:01) back then. 😉 Thanks for the video! I've been up and down this road more times than I can count and have lived here my entire life. I was just starting the 7th grade at the time this footage was taken.
03:50 very surreal when you suddenly started narrating... Just saying.
Awesome
Keep the camera still next time
Im trying to remember a biiiig auto store. Two brothers or possibly a trio owned it. In fact they owned quite a few stores on lancaster. My dad told me their big shop was on the same side of where Wendys is now and not far from it.. in fact, i think it might have been where Kike's taqueria and a teriyaki place are now, that mimi mall building. These brothers had moustaches or they looked similar. And they had a local commercial that would come on a lot.
Is there any way you will publish the 3 hour version? Do you have more videos ?
Lancaster sure did look different back then wasn’t even born yet
Looks like it was a shithole then just like now
That’s the old days in Salem!!! Was 15 then and lots of those stores are gone. But, thanks for the video!!
6:20 My red Nissan 200 SX Turbo at Magic Touch ... lol I miss that car.
Dang, I drive those streets almost daily and while much has changed much of it is still exactly the same. I was 12 when this was filmed and living in NE Salem at the time. Man time flies, now I’ve been married almost 19 years and have kids of my own.
This is such an underrated human.. Janet Dalen is a legendary fish counter
I was 1..and a state up still
its crazy 2 years later i would be born. also crazy to see the street i lived on looks so different but like i remember the feel. thank you for this.
Peter Brady what's up?? So I seen about three of your videos pop across my scrolling through UA-cam. Been 8 years are you still in town you want to go out or cop watch sometime let me know
Thank you for this
I was 14 in 86...my parents moved to the Seattle area in 86. This is what I remember Salem looking like, was sambo's still open in 86?
I remember having so much fun at the hydrotubes! They are closed? Thats sad! It was great, you could go during winter! I have not been back to Salem in years ....
Do you remember the days they started to close because people got injured? It was amazing as a kid. I still remember the last time I went as my friends heard someone stuck razor blades inside the seems from the outside and I highly doubt it was true but back then we were kids and believed EVERYTHING! 😂
@ol-man-duffyj688 I don't remember people getting hurt.
Does anyone remember the Argonauts bingo hall on Portland Road?? Next door to now Harbor Freight? I spent many of childhood memories there with my grandmother who managed that place Barbera Burdge. Curious if anyone else had fond memories of that place
Yes. K mart was there. I lived half a mile away. I watched the goonies when it came out and decided to go into the man hole on my street with a friend. We took a radio flyer wagon with candles and proceeded to travel as far as it would take us. We came out in a clearing in a field right next to the bingo hall.
I do t know why I’m up this late but probably the wind in Salem. Man this made me smile and laugh at 3:30am! Thanks for sharing. We truly had different life’s back then as kids and that’s an awesome story! 👏🏼. I would have loved a journey like that as a kid! Never did go into manholes but certainly had to hang out while Grandma ran through all the blue light specials and back then GT or DYNO was the BMX bikes to die for.
@ hahaha. Yes. I had a blue and white GT. Loved it like a soulmate.
Miss the fabric stores. Hancock Fabric by Michael's back then, and Fabric land. Used to work at House of Fabric which was on the other side of the street.
I was probably shopping at Lancaster Mall that day.
Wow! Discovery Zone! The sticker ball!!!!
I was in Boot Camp when this video was shot. Thank you for posting this.
Very cool.. grew up there and this was taken five days before I turned 18
a lot of memories!!
Did you take all this footage? Pretty cool
Very cool! Thank you! Great memories of Black Angus! Hot spot was there,O'Callaghans and La Casa! Made our rounds on weekends! Met my ex husband at O'Callaghans. Meyer and Frank too,my Mom was still alive and loved that store, funny is then I worked there as it's Macys! Love these. 🥰
Love this! Great memories as I just moved back to Salem in 1986!
Takes me back to 1 yr and 1/2 before my Mom passed. Great memories to see. Thank you for posting.
Thank you, great memories! I lived off Lancaster 85 through 88.
Love these! Lived in those grey townhouses shortly after sunnyview light. From 86 to 89 worked at Roth's Lancaster 80 to 85, Memories!
Camera too high
So cool, great memories! Just moved back to Salem. Miss those days!🥺 Was happily married and My Mom was still alive!
totally forgot the car lot on the corner of sunnyview where walgreens is now
There was a spa shop too they sold hot tubs.
What is that massive wall at the end of the video in downtown Salem??????
Truett brothers cannery warehouse
The railroad crossing at 0:33 was part of the old Southern Pacific Geer Branchline. From there west, it ran past the state penitentiary and used to connect up with the mainline by the train station downtown, near the old Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Going the other way, it went behind several neighborhoods and crossed Cordon Rd. near the (now demolished) Pictsweet mushroom plant, went past the little league fields and continued on to a wye east of town, near Hazelgreen, which is still in use. The tracks have long since been torn out and houses have been built over parts of it, but large sections of the roadbed are still there, as is the old crossing on Lancaster Dr.
4:24 The old Hydrotube! I got in there and explored a few times when I was a kid before they finally demolished it. I remember the pool was full of trash and broken appliances from the snack bar and you could see in some of the rooms where homeless people had bedded down in there at various times. There were even a few long-abandoned arcade cabinets and a broken pinball machine in the arcade section. The entrance to the actual waterslides up on top of the building had a bunch of pigeons living in it. I found a set of kid's fingerless skater gloves in one of the old lockers that had probably been there since the mid-80s.
Thanks for sharing that’s wild. I’m a bit older than you but I stopped going as the rumors were some girl got cut up by someone who stuck razor blades inside between the tube seems. I doubt it was true but when I was a teen it put the fear of God in is ever going back to the hydrotube!
Kind of reassuring watching this. It looks almost the same today. No heartbreaking remembrances of a lovely park, mansion, or school that became a car lot or a peep show. Lancaster was always car lots and peep shows.
Wish we had pictures of it when it was more farmland before Lancaster Mall.
The south side is car lots and peep shows (albeit less porn shops than there were when I was a kid. There's one big one across from the strip mall next to Sonic's and then there's one around the corner on State St). The Lancaster I grew up with was more than that: Carrows, Chuck E Cheese, Albertson's, Togo's Subs, Old Country Buffet, WareMart Foods with their outdoor hotdog stand, Shopko, Blockbuste Music (why yes, Blockbuster briefly also had their own music stores. They sold CDs and tapes), Alligator Video...
That’s funny as that peep show arcade is on the right first 39 seconds of this video. Used to be shady looking and now I think it’s a car lot.
@ “I need a cheap used car!” “Why?” “So I can get to the nudie show!” - Lancaster Shoppers, probably
this is so amazing ... wish it showed lancaster mall a bit more, but shoot this kind of footage is so rare .... I was 9/10 years old in 86 ... and my family would drive this way so often to hit GI Joes and Jafco etc.. along lancaster
I wonder what he's up to now 4:33
I wondered that too and imagined him seeing this some day. ❤
You should upload the actual video on your computer it think the quality would be so much better
Whoa! I was born August 86 but on the other end of Lancaster.
1991 A legend was born! 😎
