People need to realise that there is a difference between jealousy and envy. Then they may realise the complex relationship between these two great composers.

Don’t agree that his 5th Symphony, in response to the criticisms of the 4th, was written to demonstrate conformity with Soviet state expectations. The 5th is a work of great emotion with Shostakovich, months after its release, responding to questions as to the meaning behind the music, in a way that pleased the authorities at the time (ultimately Stalin). However, in a book I recently read, Symphony for the City of the Dead, which is about Shostakovich and the siege of Leningrad during WWll, it was noted that the 5th Symphony expressed the feelings of the people during the reign of Stalin, and not a work of music that conformed with political expectations to extol the state.

They were seeing a genius not only perform his own piece that made him famous, but also saw him live, improvising and improving upon it, but they ridiculed him for it, how shameful and disrespectful. 🤦🏻‍♂️

2:50 You can definitely see these abrupt changes between rage/anger and incredible sweetness and empathy in his violin concerto and 9th symphony but also throughout his music. And despite everything he remained hopeful
