Growing to Live
United States
Приєднався 3 чер 2014
Growing tropical plants in a mountainous environment in Hawaii can be a rewarding and unique experience. Here I share planting and growing tips for tropical and non-tropical plants. While we all learn, share and grow together.
Planting a Turmeric Patch for the next season of health and wellness
Turmeric (Olena), a tropical plant that belongs to the ginger family. We have expanded our Turmeric planting area and begun replanting since it grows so well. Turmeric needs a lot of sunlight so choose a spot in your garden where it can receive 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Make sure you mulch heavy and keep the soil moist. Turmeric is usually ready to harvest 8-10 months after planting when the leaves and stems start to turn yellow and dry up. Turmeric is a spice used in cooking and provides great health benefits.

Shampoo Ginger - Awapuhi, Planting Tips
Переглядів 30921 день тому
Awapuhi known as shampoo ginger is grown from rhizomes and is best grown in ground but be careful it can spread so the plant should be managed. You can also grow in large pots with well-draining potting mix. The plant is mostly grown in tropical areas, thrives in partial shade and needs to be kept moist. This is a floral plant and is very easy to grow.

The garden grows when it rains and so does the grass and the weeds. But we must maintain the grass and weeds, or you will never see the garden. Which all means someone had to weed whack and keep the area clear, guess today is a good day for that. Sharing the not so exciting maintenance work. Raw and unedited.

Haole Koa
Totally need to remove the Haole Koa and replace with food production.
Malama Aina anake
Mahalo, I totally enjoy working the Aina and giving back.
Ginger flowers are very fascinating. 🤩
Yes, they are and there are so many varieties and colors.
Do you allow hunting? Pros and cons as to allowing someone armed on property, dogs? More pros and cons. Friends? Best choice! My friends are all cons. Only joking.
I totally understand...LOL Hunters do pass by the mala to go deeper into the valley to hunt which helps to reduce the pua'a numbers, just having the dogs walking thru the mala helps with scents that the pua'a pick up on and stay away for a while which is a positive. Unfortunately, the Aina our mala is at cannot have any hunting only management with trapping...
Aloha. I am trying to find who has access to the cemetery. Samuel Andrews and the Naiwiʻs are my cousins are buried here and I would love to help care for it.
Yes, I do know who takes care of the Makua Graveyard and I could connect you. I would prefer not to make that public in this space. So, I would need a way to contact you. Mahalo for viewing and asking.
Pua’a no problem. Sausage, smoked, ground. So much to eat! Great job on planting your taro, I see you have different varieties. My mala is small but enough for me. Enjoy! Variety is UlaUlaMoana, Akado,(dasheen).
You are so right, wild pua'a makes great smoked meat. But they can do some damage to the plants in your mala, gotta love nature and all it brings. Taro is such a great plant; you can make so many different dishes. Enjoy your mala.
I have ten in a pot😂 hiw do I separate them? Please tell me
It is easy, once you unpot your plant you will notice several separate rhizomes with roots and each one can be replanted. You can also separate larger rhizomes just like you would do for ginger or turmeric root planting. I would not let the rhizomes dry out, if you are going to be planting over several days make sure you keep the exposed rhizomes damp with water between replanting and plant into moist soil.
I have a few no cones yet tho😢
In time you will get cones. I have noticed it's better to grow Awapuhi in 2-3 gallon pots. I have started cuttings in 6 inch pots and had to keep moving the plant up to larger pots. So, it would be easier to just plant in the larger pot to start off... less replanting and work.
What fertilizer they need to grow
I do not use any fertilizers on my Awapuhi, I try to grow my plants as natural as possible with mulch, banana peels for nitrogen and keeping the soil moist with regular watering.
What about the Northwest?Do they need to be brought in during the winter cold
Awapuhi can be grown outdoors on the U.S. mainland in zones 8 through 10, or as an indoor plant in colder climates. You could also grow in pots that could be moved indoors during colder times.
Awesome flowers! 😃💚
Thank you Awapuhi is easy to grow either in ground or in pots.
How much time for maturity from green to red cone?
What I have noticed with my plants is once a green cone is fully formed it would take about 2 months for the green color to turn to all red.
@ Thanks.
@ Your welcome
Did you put rocks or sand at the bottom of the pot? Also, do you use fertilizer?
If I plant into pots, I may put a few small rocks at the bottom of the pot, but not all the time. I do not use sand in my plantings, I do use about half mulch and half soil for a lighter planting mix to help with root production and water drainage. I would not suggest heavy clay soil for these rhizomes. I do not use fertilizers, but I regularly add dried banana peels to the soil (for nitrogen) and continually add an inch or two of mulch around the base of the plant as it grows.
How long did it take to bloom
A few months once the rhizomes start growing leaves annually. Best to plant many rhizomes in an area that can grow yearly.
Beautiful
Thank you
Very big problem for banana farmer.
Yes, it is... so farmers growing banana need to know the signs of bunchy top. I'm still learning while growing banana plants.
Linda mudas de pitaya
Thank you
Please do you change the water everyday?
I usually change out the water for the dragon fruit cuttings soaking in water about every 3-4 days and I keep the container in a shaded area. Enjoy growing your plants.
You could make delicious dishes with those green bananas.
Yes, that is true many in my location make Pasteles a traditional Puerto Rican dish normally made with plantains, but harder to find here so they use green banana in placement of the plantains.
You only need one plantain and a bunch of green bananas a taro and a potato.
It has definitely taken maturity & time to learn this 💯
MINDBLOWING INFO 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Bunchy top of banana....dwarf banana plant
This is bunchy top; I've been growing this variety of banana for about 5 years now and unfortunately this one got bunchy, I separated this plant from the others and as the plant grew the leaf structure confirmed the disease. I do not grow the dwarf variety. Thank you for viewing.
Aloha, Looks really nice. What variety is the kalo? Is one Oopukai?
Aloha, I know the first patch has 2 varieties the kalo with the green base of the plant is Lehua and I need to find my notes on the other darker base kalo (and update this). The second (smaller) patch is all Lehua. The few in the quick shot between the 2 patches is a Japanese variety Chigechi. I hope your growing kalo what an awesome plant. Thank you for watching.
Does the nectar replenish?
Maybe once or twice additional, but the flower will eventually die back and will not produce anymore nectar. I would suggest you keep the soil moist to help the flower replenish until the flower dies back, but the flower will produce less nectar as it dies back.
@@growingtolive2040TY. How long does it take to flower? It's almost a year already since I planted it in the pot. Still haven't filled the pot. I hope what I really got is shampoo ginger. It seems sellers here use "shampoo ginger" and "beehive ginger" interchangeably.
Thanks for sharing, I have some good friend in the big Island that I work with in the past.
Very cool! I love Hawaii Island so much diversity for agriculture.
I just picked up some
Awesome enjoy growing Awapuhi, a great plant to grow.
Awesome what is the name of the place you got them from
@urbanharvestdfw where did you get them
@@noinhibitions7572 I got mine from Amazon I believe
What size of pots do you grow them?
I would do starters in 1-2 gallon pots (1-3 months of growth) but then I would move up to a 5 gallon pot or into the ground. This plant loves being in the ground and will spread so you may need to manage.
@growingtolive2040 is it 5gal for one with several plants like yours?
@ If I was planting 1-2 starters together, I would use a 5 gallon pot
I love this fruit. Just started to plant my own🌵👌🏻
Awesome you will enjoy growing Dragon Fruit and the taste is way better than store bought. Very easy to grow and manage.
@@growingtolive2040 That's what I've heard about the store bought ones. Can't wait for mine to have its first fruits😊🙏🏻 I've never tasted Dragon Fruit before so my expectations are quiet high 😁
@@KBDRAGONFRUIT you will really enjoy the fruit you grow, plus you know how the plant is treated especially if you choose to not use any pesticides. I grow all my plants naturally no pesticides.
But it depends on wher u at,9-10 youre somewhere taking the true inhabitants land!b logic
I'm on leased private land, I would be open to sharing if we were asked, but that does not happen.
Don't let the Devil steal your joy ❤ Thanks for your comment and for your blessings of love and light with each moment of your life in alignment with peace and healing. ❤
Thank you for the kind words. It has taken me some time to learn that I have many more blessings than receiving the fruit that is grown. Your mind, soul & body can be nourished by nature and the beauty all around us just as much as the food that nourishes your body.
@@growingtolive2040 Such a magnificent attitude. I know how disheartening it is to be in a position where thougutless greedy people are pillaging your garden. It is a violation that is always felt . You have created a place of sanctuary and you have a great blessing for the environment and for your creativity to flourish and spread. People who are seeing this channel are inspired and are blessed by your endeavors.
@@parry3231 I hope that I can offer that to all, through sharing the garden, lessons I've learned through gardening and life. We all have the opportunity to learn and make choices. Thank you for the positive light.
Sorry your bananas got stolen!
Unfortunately, it is becoming too often, and it is heartbreaking since I do not sell the produce but give to volunteers who help in the garden or elderly neighbors.
Big Dogs
I would love to have some very large dogs but trails that are near the garden lead to hunting areas and many hunters have dogs, so I respect their rights to hunt and don't use guard dogs.
Bussy bee 🐝🐝nice fruits
Yes, the bee's just love the passion fruit flower and they are a joy to watch.
Very healthy growth 🌱plant 👍👍👍
Yes, one of my banana varieties has large bunches of fruit, but a very slow growing banana plant.
Watching host ❤❤❤
It is heart breaking when you put so much work in your garden and having your produce stolen. Your garden looks beautiful and peaceful.
Thank you for the comment. Yes, it is heartbreaking and knowing it takes banana fruit 18 -24 months from planting to mature fruit it's especially hard to deal with, but I've begun to learn that's part of growing a garden.
helo mama..wow nice passion fruit
Yes, Passion fruit flower is very colorful, and the fruit is awesome.
Me encanta ❤
Thank you glad you enjoyed the video.
Wonderful flowers! 💚
Yes, the flower on the Mountain Apple tree is so colorful.
Amazing flowers! 💚
Yes, they are beautiful flowers and passion fruit is very easy to grow. Thank you for watching.
Df plants love the sun In shade they will get darker green But they will. Not grow big I'm. Talking based on an experience I have 10 varieties and more to come next year
Yes, some of my Dragon Fruit plants are in half sun half shade and are a beautiful green color while the ones in full sun are light green and yellow, both seem to produce the same amount of fruit. Currently I only have 2 varieties but planning to get more and try grafting. Thank you for watching.
@@growingtolive2040 have to mention somethin Seeing your Df plant yellow is not harmful If its not getting sun burn it's normal Keep it up and bring us more videos thanks
@@fouadbenrezzak8398 Thank you for that advice, my Dragon Fruit stems that do yellow seem to be fine and still produce fruit.
You have given very good information. There is no Dragon Fruits plant in my garden for taking Dragon Fruits cuttings. Will follow your tips. Thank you very much!,,😊😊
Thank you for watching, I know you can order dragon fruit cuttings from several websites and they ship.
Which climate is suitable for this plant?
The Awapuhi plant grows best in mild climates and indoors in colder climates. They like moist soil and shaded areas. They are very easy to grow.
Thank you so much for this! I see mine starting to grow the flowers but I wasn’t sure. I’m in NC zone 8b and I was hoping I was seeing the right thing. I’m so excited now. Can’t wait until it matures. Hopefully before it gets cold. What do you do for it when it gets cold? I have frost blankets, will that work until Spring?
You could try frost blankets or plant into pots that could be moved during colder weather.
How long do I wait for dragon fruit to have fruit on it?
A Dragon fruit plant can start budding at 6-8 months, from budding to flowering about 21 days, from flower to fruit about 30 days, then 30 to 40 days for fruit to mature depending on the variety. The Dragon fruit plant buds & flowers for about 5 months of a year usually summer - fall. I hope this helps.
Very nice..🙏👍😊
Thank you for viewing, have a great day
😊😊🙏👍
Thank you for watching.
Wow.. very nice.😊🙏👍
Thank you for watching breadfruit is a great substitute for potato and can be cooked many different ways.
A good piece should be at least 8 inches or more, and also be the most mature one in the bunch& not fresh growth one because it wouldn't be able to tolerate heavy heat or cold moments of the weather when planted?.
Yes, that is good advice, thank you.
