Приєднався 25 лют 2022
Shelmar Acres is a family farm in its third generation. My wife and I manage the farm with the help of my parents and our four kids. We raise cattle and hogs and farm a couple hundred acres. We would love to share some of our farm life with you through these videos. It is our hope that through these videos you would gain a little more understandings of current agriculture how our food is grown! We hope you enjoy watching!

Pigs are Stronger than Steel and Concrete
We have a little time between batches to replace or fix up all the stuff that the pigs broke or wore out. Concrete and Steel are no match for the pigs. Then after all that we need to get set up for the little pigs!

Its time to get some pigs on the truck
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Місяць тому
Hog loading is a big part of our hog finishing program here at Shelmar acres. It take a team of great guys to get this done. Pigs can be very frustrating and stubborn, but getting them on the truck as smoothly and efficiently as possible is an important part of getting our finished product to market. The pigs are usually unsure about new spaces and especially if the air is a little cool so gett...

We made a deal with the kids that if we get 1000 views on this song from the silo, that they would enter the contest for a chance to sing the national anthem for the state farm show. Pass this video around! We need to get the views! #songfromthesilo #familyfarm #farming #farmlife #farmliving

very well done, great idea to fix a problem many are facing!!!! do you know what it would cost to have a 2500 head redone if you hired it all?
Thanks for the encouragement! I am not sure what it would cost to do a whole barn at once. That other part of that kind of project is deciding where to stop! If you are going to pull out all the slats might be a good time for new fencing also, and it goes on like that.
Did you design and build the winch cart? It was a great and informing video!
Yes, we designed and built that cart. It is the only way changing slats like this is possible! It has been a bit of an evolution over the years, but it is working pretty good now.
Very interesting. I’ve never seen the slants getting replaced. The winch cart is a great idea and a valuable asset to get the job done. Good luck with the new bacon seeds coming 😊.
Lol Bacon seeds!! Thats great! Yes, the cart is the only way changing slats like this is possible!
Well done... as usal... Greetings from Italy... 😉
Thank you! And thanks for your faithful support! What part of Italy are you from?
@@shelmaracres North of Italy... Modena... famous for Parmigiano, Ferrari and Aceto Balsamico... 😉 last week I was in the US... Florida... great country...
@@Galileooooo77 Thanks great! if you are in PA you can look us up! Many years ago Heather and I did a vacation in Cinque Terre. Looks like that is about directly to the west of you.
Awesome to see that we made the cut to make it into the video! It was great getting to meet you and chatting for a bit!
Yes, it was good to meet! I am looking forward to seeing what you guys can do for us!
Thanks for taking us along to the Farm Show! Looks like you had a good time. Great video!
We always enjoy the keystone farm show. I know what you mean about all the big equipment though. I think small and medium size farms can still remain competitive, but I do wonder what the future holds.
I agree that there are ways to stay competitive, it just takes a little more creativity! Thanks for commenting!
Farm sip here - Drop me a note. Contact on the page. if you got the space in that 7210 I got the perfect fit for it. on me.
Left keystone thinking the same thing. Way this stuff is going where dose the small to medium farm fit in commodity ag....
It feels good to know others are processing that same things! It doesn’t feel like just getting bigger is always the answer, because the productivity and efficiency relative to the inputs starts to diminish as operations get larger. Everybody out side of farming wants farms to operate like small farms, but sometimes it seems like only large farms have the economy of scale to get ahead.
@shelmaracres your not alone. I feel the size vs efficiency line is constantly moving. Seems like a big farm 15 years ago is almost small now. Other issue is consolidation of our support industry i find concerning. We are lucky in southern pa that we still have alot of small ag support buisness here mostly because of our small farms and plain communities. I know alot of farm hours away that travel to lancaster for parts service and supplies. I feel the small farms going to have to make van effort to market to the consumers and our areas have alot of consumers. I'm in Eastern berks county
Beautiful job, kids! You should be very proud! What an honor!!
We are so proud of them! It was not easy for all of them to agree to do this, but it was so cool to see them work through this and agree to do something that they at first didn't want to do and we are all so blessed by the result!
Great job and great video (as usual)... Greetings from Italy (in holiday on US)... ciaooooooooooo 😉
Thank you!
What a performance.
Thanks! I will pass this along to the kids!
What a great job with the kids!!! So many sad stories with kids these days...none here 😊...good job!¡!
They are an amazing blessing!

Those puppies are adorable, and your Christmas tree was beautiful! Merry Christmas!
Your right! I told Heather the tree was so incredible this year. She did an amazing job with it and with all the decorating. She is so gifted in this! She makes Christmas so special at our house!
Merry Christmas and HAPPY NEW YEAR thanks to your family for the awesome video this year!!!

Merry Christmas with Love from Sweden 🇸🇪❤️❤️❤️❤️
Why didn’t you move that closer to the shop then you didn’t have to run all that hose and you can bring your pipe right down alongside the building get away over there. It’s just an idea.
That’s a great question. I had considered moving it back to a spot closer to the shop, because we had it there in the past, but there were a couple reasons I left it where it was, at least for now. The first was that we have four posts driven in the ground to keep the water trough in place because the cattle push it around. I didn’t want to try to move those posts in frozen ground. Secondly was the reason that we had moved it to it’s current location in the past, and that was that the area near the back of the shop does not drain as well. With the cattle slopping water around, the area by the trough got to be a muddy hole. The spot where the trough is now drains much better and has not got muddy there. Thanks for watching close enough to ask these questions! We appreciate your watching!
Merry Xmas… 🎄
Merry Christmas!
Wow! You still have a lot of pigs to get rid of! When will they be going? There sure is a lot of repair work to keeping things running smoothly, but you guys sure know what you are doing. You all have a lot of patience! 😁
Thanks again for the encouragement! We do have a lot of pigs to send yet. Our load out takes about 8 weeks and we are about 5 weeks in. Today we finished loading out the first barn.

Mitch, there's this new fangled contraption invented a while back, it's called a ladder, Try them you may like them! LOL
😆 Your right, I will have to give that a try!
Great video... and great job (as usual)... Greetings from italy... 😉
Jared showed where the term farm boy strong comes from. 😊. Kudos to him for holding up the box while you were looking for another socket and his help installing the new one. Good job young man
That’s true. He is a big help!
Watch out, those pigs want to eat you... 🐽😉 Ask Santa for some hy-viz impact sockets. Ummm, ladders? Great video and you have terrific sons 👊
Great job and great video... well done 😉
So cool to see what all happens before I arrive to transport the pigs. The family especially the kids enjoyed seeing what happens when dad goes to work haha definitely one of my favorite farms to pick up at!
Thanks Andrew! Hopefully we will get to see you again this batch!
That's a lot of work loading those pigs! Made us tired just watching you! Hope you all had time for a nap after you got all those trucks loaded! 😴
I must say, I do use the Power nap to get me through the day sometimes!!
We had a 600 head sow farm in Alabama until 2013. We farrowed and sold wean pigs. We got replacement gilts every 6 weeks about the size of these tops. My body…especially my knees felt all of this. Lol
I know what your talking about! I started wearing knee pads and padded shin guards a couple years ago, and that has made a big difference!
"Sooey you sow bellied swine" was the words we used to load our pigs!
That’s funny! It’s good to see your comment! It has been a while! Thanks for saying something and thanks for watching.
Not an easy job at all
That’s true!
Gave me a flashback when I was younger and they had square dancing in a neighborhood barn. They also had a few wedding receptions in the barn and it was very popular. I was impressed with the stairs. Kudos to the designers 😊
Thanks! We have been having square dances here for a long time.
What a clever idea with those steps! Everybody seemed to really be enjoying themselves and knew what they were doing. Did you all take square dance lessons? 😁
They teach us as we go. So you don’t need to know anything to start. All you need is to pay attention and you can do it!
Great... as usual... Greetings from Italy! 😉 Bravo!
Thanks so much for your encouragement!
Momma is REALLY keeping a close watch over her baby like a momma should 😊❤❤❤❤❤
Yes! She definitely was.
Have you tried Carabiner hooks? I saw another UA-cam Farm Channel using them.
Great! M or F? 😉
It was a heifer calf.

How do you know which cows to ship to market by the tag on their ear ? Is that a concrete floor where the cattle were with mud and manure mixed, I’m assuming ?
Yes. There is concrete under there. We should have had that scrapped up before we sorted. The cattle are sorted by visual assessment.
There was some slip and sliding out there, and I don't mean just the cattle! 😄Thanks for another great video!
Yes, things were a little more sloppy than we like that day! It had just rained and we had not go down to scrap up yet. It made for a bit of a mess!
Di negara mana ini

Should have put straw in that mudd first. Before you let anything in there. Your lucky half them cows didn't break a leg or worse
I know it was a little sloppy because it has just rained, but there is concrete inter there. So we didn’t need to worry about getting stuck in mud.
You poor fellow, your sure doing ALOTA work, ALOTA WORK, MOSTLY BY YOURSELF, MORE FOOTAGE PLEASE!! MORE, 😳😲🤯😱🤠💪👌👍😁🤠
Thanks for your concern, but don’t feel bad. We have a great team here that is not always seen in the videos, but is a major part of making the farm work. We will get more videos up!
