Simple Reef Tank Dosing Guide - No Complicated Steps
I wanted to share some things that made dosing much easier for me in the beginning stages of my tanks coral growth. These tips are meant for beginners and those looking to start dosing. Consider this the first step, but not the final destination in learning to dose. As coral growth accelerates different additives might be needed.

      @@kevin916587 When you are initially filling up the dosing lines you should flick the lines coming to and from the dosing head. Often times bubbles get trapped in there, basically try to run more liquid through your lines while flicking all the bubbles out.

    That's a nice setup! I didn't see an ATO in there. Did you work that in somewhere? The only thing I would change would be two separate return lines with two pumps. Somewhere down the road, one will fail to restart after a power blink and Murphy dictates it will happen when your not home....and I second the comment of lighting in the stand, under cabenet lights or the IP65 LED tape strip work really well. With the tape strip LEDs, you can even get RGBW so you can change colors to spiff it up for show!

    Kalkwasser in the ato or dosed and magnesium chloride is probably the easiest beginner method. Plus you get a higher pH which will effect the chemistry of everything else positvely. With that much water volume and small coral mass you might end up with elevated trace elements.

    It seems like you might be running to much water through your overflow, beananimal has a wonderful write up that you could follow with your box design. My preference is to have one subsurface with a strainer run a gate valve on that one, one stand pipe as your surface skimmer and then another slightly taller for emergency overflow. Tune the gate valve until the surface skimmer is just barely siphoning water, gives a silent operation but goes out of tune easily, which i prefer as then i know something is wrong

    • @SaltwaterTherapyTV
      @SaltwaterTherapyTV 7 днів тому

      I think the only real way to solve the issues are with straight standpipes in the overflow instead of a J shape pulling a siphon. That way I can get the water level above the holes, not sure if I’m understanding correctly, but sounds like you’re suggesting something similar? Might have to give it a try! I’m running my return pump at about 3/5 what it’s max GPH is and my overflow box is rated for much more than my current pump is flowing so not sure if that would be the issue. Anyways thanks for the input, sounds like you know what you’re doing and it works well!

      @SaltwaterTherapyTV you are correct I'm pretty much saying keep your emergency, add a slightly lower surface syphon and either pull the primary and replace with a screen right at the bulkhead or throw the screen on the u pipe

    If you ever set up another tank look into modularmarine. He built my overflow and I couldn't be happier. His boxes are purposefully built just below the top of the glass to prevent the issues with loud dropping water like all the others have. He'll also customize anything you want. Heck, if you wanted him to build you one to match your existing holes so you didn't have to tear your tank apart I'm sure he could do that too. Happy reefing!

    • @boj4klayman919
      @boj4klayman919 8 днів тому

      What the modular Marine would do is raise the water level in the entire tank hiding it behind the rim, they're specialized for rimmed tanks, there's a cutout in the external box allowing it to sit as high as possible.

      @yowowaho 7 днів тому

      I completely agree Red Sea looks way better! My original goal was never to compete with the look of a Red Sea, so to me this was just a fun comparison to make. Also I think the price difference does speak for itself because for some people, the time it takes to save up extra money for a Red Sea could be spent as an additional few years in the hobby with cheaper gear.

    With ur skimmer why not just let it drain into a milk jug under or behind the stand. That’s what I do and only have to empty it every couple months. Also the little tool that comes with the ai prime is used to pop that screen out then you can just take it to the sink. Once removed you can get inside better to blow the dust off the fan too!

    • @SaltwaterTherapyTV

      My stand is packed full of things both in and around it so I resort to this, plus I’m OCD about it the skimmate smell as it builds up so I guess it’s a blessing in disguise that it forces me to clean the collection cup more often. I do a deeper clean of the lighting every few months, but for for weekly maintenance I just wipe it and dust it. Thanks for watching the vid!

      As an alternative, I went to HD and got storm window screen frame. You get bulk aluminum frame, corner pieces and some of the cording to secure the screen in the frame with the little roller. For screen, I used bird netting. It is a bigger screen with about 1/2 inch squares. It might not work for smaller fish but it works for me. I put two layes of the netting on the frame to tighten up the holes a little but it is so light it barely blocks any light.

    2:40. Is it Coral Sand you will be putting in? The reason I ask is Coral sand becomes anaerobic. I will explain. First, you only want to have a thin layer of sand just to cover the base of the Aquarium and not a thick bed of sand (in a thick bed of sand the sand at the bottom will become anaerobic) otherwise you will have trapped gasses that are deadly for your livestock and in the same sense if you have eggcrate at the bottom covered over with sand then the grains of sand in-between each square will not be able move around trapping not only organic matter and Fish waste but also the toxic gasses which will build up. It would be a wise thing to take out the egg crate now before you go any further. Otherwise, you will have a lot of work taking out all the rocks and sand in order to remove the eggcrate. Also, keep in mind or make a note to replace the Coral Sand in Two years, reason being is Coral Sand starts to lose it's goodness Six months down the line and in Two years it would no longer have nutrients and become anaerobic. I hope this information is helpful. Have a nice day and take care, Sir. 🤙🏼🙂🤙🏼❤️

    • @SaltwaterTherapyTV
      @SaltwaterTherapyTV 5 місяців тому

      I used Caribsea Arag-Alive sand. I ended up only using small amounts of the egg crate placed only under some of the larger rocks so 90% (or more) of the bottom panel is not covered by egg crate. I will say I did end up using too much sand (1lb per gallon) so I will likely be removing sand once I add more rock. If I could go back and do it again I would put half as much sand as I did. Thanks for the insight and thanks for watching!
