    Great background to Shinya Tsukamoto and his journey to making Tetsuo. Chu Ishikawa's soundtrack is a phenomenal pairing to the movie's imagery and story. Was fortunate enough to see his band Der Eisenrost play in Osaka in 2000, truly amazing live! So tragic Ishikawa's life was cut so short at 51, he had so much more to create.

    Thanks man, I remember catching Tetsuo on late night channel 4 in the Uk sometime in the early 90's. They played a lot of anime around that time for some reason which was fortunate for us. The dark and other worldly visuals mixed with the industrial soundtrack stuck in my mind over the years and I've come back to revisit it a number of times. The film really is a unique work of art and seeing this story of how the director pursued his passion for filmmaking, along with his friends and fellow artists, really is inspiring. Especially seeing how everything came together for that moment at the Rome Film Festival, I can't imagine how Tsukamoto-san must have felt to gain the recognition after such struggles.

    William Gibson created the term "cyberpunk"...

    • @kossemoore3342
      @kossemoore3342 Місяць тому

      He did not...Bruce Bethke created the term in 83 based on a short story of the same name that he wrote. Id argue Gibson didn't necessarily create cyberpunk solely by himself in a vacuum. Yes his writings are pretty much what we think of as cyber punk to this day but to say the guys created it single handedly is wrong. The genre evolved over time based on many works that came before. You don't get cyberpunk without proto cyberpunk stories that would inspire A William Gibson to write johnny mnemonic an neuromancer. Or even a Ridley Scott to go and direct blade runner with all the artist in hat production that would influence the genre greatly as well. Cyberpunk wasnt made in a day it evolved from ideas as far back as the cult novels that preceded decades prior. But yeah cyberpunk as we know it just would not exist without Gibson for sure. It's just not as clean cut as guy made a genre after creating a book. Gibson had contemporaries just as vital to the scene.

    The real answer is William Gibson who wrote the book "Neuromancer" in 1984. He created the first concept of the "matrix", and is what inspired the movie series and created the genre of Cyber punk. You were close though! It's a great book that stands up well today and will feel very familiar for anyone who's played the cyberpunk 2077 video game.

      @kossemoore3342 Місяць тому

      To say William Gibson created cyberpunk, isn't necessarily wrong, how we imagine cyberpunk definitely comes alot form his vision. But it's not totally right. Gibson wasn't the only cyberpunk writer shaping the scene at the time and you don't really get a genre called cyberpunk if you ignore dystopian and proto cyber punk writings that preceded the 80s. Cyberpunk doesn't exist without Philip k dick or an orson wells for example. Cyberpunk is more of a conclusion to that pulpy and dystopian sci Fi you got decades prior. Guys like William Gibson would have been influenced by it. It's not as simple as Jonny mnemonic was written thus now we have cyberpunk. It's more gradual than that. If that makes sense. Hell Akira(manga) predates neuromancer by 2 years debuting in 82 same year we got blade runner. All of these writers were all inspired and writing similar stuff around each other. There's this really good interview on Gibson where he talks about writing Neuromancer in the early 80s. He goes to see blade runner and he freaks out because the movie is so much like the book he's writing and so he scraps it and rewrites the whole book. Took him a few years to write neuromancer.

    • @Fitz2393
      @Fitz2393 Місяць тому

      _Neuromancer_ marked the gelling of themes and trends into a single work, creating an icon of sorts, but looking into the influences that helped form it give a sense of cyberpunks roots and pervasiveness. Philip K. Dick, Michael Moorcock (Jerry Cornelius stories in particular and his editing choices for “New Worlds”) Roger Zelazny, John Brunner, J. G. Ballards, Philip Jose Farmer, Harlan Ellison and William S. Burroughs were all deeply influential on Gibson and his supporting publishers. Similar sources influenced the much earlier “Judge Dredd” comics in the UK from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra.
