Hello all and welcome to our channel.
Living in Germany on 500 m^2 plot, we are trying to grow as much of food as possible.
We started our no-dig vegetable garden 2 years ago on limited area.
Most of our plot is currently occupied by soil that we dug during cellar build, which series you can currently see on this channel.
Our target is to continuously transform to permaculture garden, so please follow us on our journey.

Naomi and Miro

Finishing the side arches | DIY Root Cellar by Hand (Part 41)
In Part 41 of my DIY Root Cellar series, I finally face the reality that building arches without supports might not have been my brightest idea. After days of frustration, falling bricks, and questionable decisions, I give in and build wooden supports-and suddenly everything becomes so much easier. Watch as I transform chaos into order, finish seven arches in record time, and reflect on why sometimes shortcuts aren’t worth it. Stick around for laughs, lessons, and plenty of woodworking tips along the way!

Welcome back to Part 39 of the root cellar series! This time, we’re tackling the side arches-by hand, with no wooden supports. In this episode: Watch me defy gravity using concrete suction to hold the bricks in place. See how I cut bricks at tricky angles to transition to the main arch. Laugh (or cry) along with me as I deal with dust, doubts, and plenty of trial and error. It’s detailed, chall...

Lots of credit for using bricks for the curve. I opted to do a concrete arch when I finally get to that stage. Definitely enjoy watching your progress
Thanks or your comment! Concrete is definitely quicker. My backs still heart just watching what I was doing (-:
Good Job!
Thank you very much, and have a wonderful New Year!
@@woodworkingmanufactory You as well
Wow this is coming out amazing!!
Thanks a lot!
Not sure why, maybe you were a little more philosophical, the complexity of the arches, the sound quality, but this is one my favorite videos of yours.
Thank you as always. The narration was always difficult part for me. On this part, I tried using AI to give me a structure what to talk about. For me, it is clear what and how I did, but to convey it the hard part. Your inputs are really important as it gives me ideas what I shall work on for improvements.
It may help your channel by making the videos longer and reaching some point of conclusion of each step in the process of the build, rather than the video ending midway through the process. Nice work regardless.
You are probably right. I have hundreds of hours of material, but it is mostly repetitive action - digging for days and months, laying bricks for days and months. I've started this video format without any deep considerations, just to leave a record behind me for my kids. There are many things wrong - camera work is missing completely and considering that I'm not artistic type and have stage fright, so including narration I'm having hard time making even these short videos (-: But I'm working on improving. Maybe when I'm through, I may try to re-make the series with less fractured structure and less parts...
@@woodworkingmanufactory You do a much better job overall than you realize. The videos are enjoyable to watch. With a bit more consideration to format, and weekly uploads, your channel subscriptions will grow much quicker. There are very few people creating content like yours.
Well, regularity is not my second name (-: Thanks for opinion though, really appreciate the input!
Your wooden arch frame looks very nice.
Thank you!
Amazing work Mr. Kolman!! You’re an inspiration.
Thank you as always Mr. Batista!
Hey, I used to be a subscriber, then lost my device and password, and had to get all new, but I couldn't remember your name to look you up. Your structure is basically my favorite on UA-cam, and I finally found you again! Excellent work my friend. You got several new videos since I last saw them, and they're all great, keep up the good work! Put all the little tips and tricks into it too!
Welcome back! And thanks for your kind comment. Next videos will follow, I just need to find time to make them (-:
I’m soooo impressed by your amazing work and patience!! What a lucky family to have you as a dad like you!
Thank you very much for this warm comment!
How have you addressed possible flooding and humidity
Thank you for your comment. Flooding is issue only from groundwater - I was facing it actually last winter. I had to keep pumping whole time and was trying to seal all the gaps between the bricks. I managed somehow in the end to keep the water out. Rain water is no issue, there will be roof over the entrance, and I put plastic foil over the main body. For humidity, I have installed ventilation pipes. Seems like I under-dimensioned the pipes and may need to install some kind of fan.
@@woodworkingmanufactoryI’m sure it’s a challenge until you find the right balance
Yes. But I’m happy it flooded last winter when the cellar was still empty. It will never be completely dry, but as long as it’s not raining a lot for long time, there shall be no issue.
Thank you
You’re more than welcomed!
Is the wood arch just there for forming the brick arch? Like a movable form?
Exactly. Will be removed once all the bricks are in place.

Is the woodworking extravaganza delayed? lol
Oh man! Has it already been a month? Let me see how fast I can pull out new part (-:
How deep back did the holes for the deadfall supports go?
Somewhere between 80cm and 1m.
You make it look easy!
Well, I'm just learning by doing. And it actually is not so complicated. Just takes time (-:

Hello Daniel, Also Happy New Year from me. Thank you for joining and for wishing me so many followers (-: Let's see where this year will take us! Miro.
Looking really good. I also tried to use google maps to see if the satellite photos would be any interesting. But it seems like your whole neighbourhood was built after they took the most recent satellite photo. The map and the streetview is fine, but the satellite image doesn't correspond to reality. Very odd. I could just barely see the pile of sand in your backyard in the streetview pictures, and I think that picture was from last summer. So I was unable to cheat and get a more recent view of the project.
Are you spying on me (-: Yes, the satellite photos are quite behind, but street view seems to be recent. You will have to be little bit more patient, we are getting closer.
If I may say… that’s creepy.
I agree, Google is creepy 😜

Just stumbled across this, I love it. It's very impressive
Hey, Thanks! Happy to have you!
Would love to see more content on this / walking though how to build it
Hi there. Over 30 episodes online already, more to come.
I was wondering what would happen if you got rain or the water table rose. I'm planning to build a root cellar, but our land has a natural slope that will allow me to put a drain in the center, thus if the water table were to rise (due to heavy rains), the water would naturally drain down the slope. Thanks for documenting your build. I've been taking notes for what could be applied to our project.
Merry Christmas! The rain itself is not such a problem. When the cellar was just a walls, the water tended to accumulate, but just about one inch. Now I have all the arches completed and the main body partially covered with send and even with heavy rains we are getting now the water does not accumulate almost at all. It still seeps through and dripping specially where the entrance arch connects to the main arch. I plan to put plastic foil over the area of the main arch and also somehow seal the entrance arch, so the rain water shall not be an issue. Water table is another issue. The cellar floor is just about 1m above the water table, so if it increases significantly my cellar will transform to covered swimming pool...
You are a machine!
Thanks! Don't tell anyone :-)
Im really enjoying this series, can't wait to see the finished product.
Hi Nathan, Thanks a lot for your comment and your feedback!
Although there is some difficulty in understanding your accent, the narration is nice, primarily due to the comforting sound of your voice. This is an upgrade in your video quality for me.
Thanks a lot for your feedback and sorry for the poor sound! Besides of my accent, I think have a mic problem and may need to upgrade for something better. Let me try with my next video.

Looks great. Is this where you are right now, or was this video shot earlier in the autumn? The reason I'm asking is that it doesn't look that cold. Especially in comparison to the snow we've got covering the ground here in Sweden.
Hi, This was actually shot a year ago. I'm just very slow making the videos. I'm located in Germany, west from Dusseldorf. We tend not to have snow at all in the winter, sometimes just one day in a year.
Where did you salvage the bricks?
Hi David, There is local handler offering bricks from demolitions of old houses. Unfortunately was not free, and was one of the highest costs on this project.

Well done on the repair my friend! Should work out nicely now.
Thank you Dustin!
I just found your channel today, and have been binge watching. Looks like a great project. Great work!
Awesome! Thank you!
Ouch!
Yes. But no big damage and easy to fix.
I'm glad to see you didn't stick to mixing cement by hand. lol
First I was actually considering mixing it by hand, but when I calculated the amount of concrete I needed I gave up.
Love that way you made the walls "simultaneously" as you dig the hole. Great system. Also love that lift. Seems very efficient in ingenious. It seems like it would've been worth investing in some kind of cement mixer though.
I was taking it as part of my exercise. I saved a lot of money for gym (-:.
@@woodworkingmanufactory I bet. lol
Another great video, brother. I like the repeating pattern of the brick. I know this might be too late to say this, but fancy brick patterns r good cause ull have to look at it for the rest of ur life, so if its a dull pattern itll get old quick. Ur doing real good man, God bless u and ur family, and I pray Jesus bless ur cellar that it may protect u and ur family and ur property, till he comes back, and after as a cool place to hang haha, God bless u brother!
Hi Dustin, Thanks for your prayers! Honestly, I didn't consider any patterns. Maybe would've been cool thing to do. Well as you said, now it's already too late. But maybe if I ever build something else I'll think of something. Take care and God bless you too!

@@woodworkingmanufactory have you already finished the cellar? I thought I had seen a short video of yours with it much closer to completion than this video shows.

Looks amazing so far
Thanks a lot!
