Great sermon Jeff, I really enjoyed. The timing couldn’t be more spot on. Hope the upcoming year is one of prosperity and blessings on your obedience. 🙏
Thanks, Norm. I appreciate that. Peace and blessings to you.
As a homeschooling parent in Pennsylvania we had to teach 10 subjects every school day (All schools did, by the way). I included religion in our day and your homily reminded me of a conversation between my kids the first day we returned to school after Christmas which was happened to be Dec 30th that year. Child #2: Epiphany is coming! (Said as he chased a younger sibling down the stairs to the study table.) Child #4: No, the five gold rings are today. Child #1: Epiphany is next church season. Child #3: It means realizing you learned something. Child #4: But the song says five gold rings Child #2: The song is about the joy of Christmas. Epiphany is about the meaning of it. Child #3: Sometimes we forget they should be together. Child #1: The song is about all the gifts of God to us. Epiphany is us figuring out the best gift of all is Jesus. Child #4: (Heavy sigh) Do I gotta write God a thank you note? (Writing thank you notes was one of their lessons that day.) It got very quiet and then Child #2 jumped up: No! We live our thank you note in our behavior towards others! Child #3: I think a thank you note might be easier. Child #1: Yep. And that is your Epiphany! After all, if it were easy, we wouldn’t need sermons. We do need ‘em so we can also become wise men one day. Child #4: Now I know why the three kings have to be BEARING the Holy Family’s gifts. This faith stuff is work (and then looking at me) ... but good work!
Perhaps more would trust and share these stories if we were more interested in listening. To paraphrase Verna Dozier in her book “The Dream of God”: In being faithful, we do the best we can and do not live to be right. Then, if we find out we are mistaken, we are not destroyed by being wrong.” Too often it seems as if there is competition when in reality, there is just believing ... in God and each other. May God bless.
