    I change about 3-5 of those engjne a month in my EV&Hybrid repair shop. I don’t even need to remove spark plug. If it comes in with a mysterious misfire Usually I will see it has been to other shop usually regular shop and has all new coils . Loosing coolant or the most subtle, drives normal no coolant lose but misfire when starting in the morning or even no symptom at all just oil coming out the head gasket mating surface is a sign that it has already started. The process is very gradual and can take several years before it becomes a full blown problem. That is why when customers come with those tell tale sign and car is still drivable I tell them to start saving 3 grand for the repair 😊

      Do you ever replace just the head gasket? I figure it might be a better repair depending on how long they drove it after it went out. I'm guessing most used engines are starting to go as well. And I'll never do another one without changing the EGR cooler, too much of a pain to clean out.

    • @Patphenis
      @Patphenis 4 місяці тому

      Not normally, especially with these engines. They usually run for quite awhile with a blown head gasket. Although, if you have a bunch of coolant on your plugs, that could definitely cause it to not fire up. I would remove coils and plugs and see if there's coolant in there. If so, yes you can probably get it to start by changing head gasket but you'll want to change coil packs and spark plugs as well

    If I start the engine for 15 seconds and it builds pressure in the coolant system, that’s definitely a blown head gasket right? If not it’s too late lol I’m halfway done

    • @ronaldoquintos1675
      @ronaldoquintos1675 10 місяців тому

      Not all blown head gasket is like that. Some blown head gasket simply loose coolant but the car otherwise runs fine, you just have to keep adding coolant every so often or your engine will overheat. Recently did one for a customer with a 2015 Prius V. Complaint was a mysterious loss of coolant. They took it to a dealer and they said dealer even used a machine to detect the failed gasket and it passed. I used my own two eyes to see that obviously oil was coming out of the gasket between the head and the block. Which mean the gasket is not doing what it’s suppose to do which is contain fluid where it should be. I did not see any anti freeze coming out there so I have to use an educated decision. First of all what is a head gaskets purpose? It’s to contain both oil and coolant where they should be. Seeing oil outside the engine coming from the head gasket meant it has failed to do its job in the first place. So it has a failed head gasket and I should replace the engine or fix it. I choose to replace engine because Toyota doesn’t even recommend fixing it once it’s failed .
