This was one day fo riding out of three we were there. This is the only day I had the camera. Unfortunately, this ride ended when Lucas crashed into a hot spring he didn't see. The wind had picked up and the dust was thick. The splash from the hot spring burned his arms and one leg. He's healing nicely.

KTM Freeride 250r Engine Reassembly and Ride
Which direction did you go?
Counter-Clockwise
This trail gave me nightmares. At exactly 28:40 mark was where I slipped and tumbled all the way down to the river on the same bike as yours in 2022.
Ouch, that's a tough place to go over the edge. I believe at that time when you were there the bridge had already been clobbered by the tree. It's pretty sketchy to ride across currently, especially when it's wet.
How did you get the stock stickers off!
I didn’t. I put a graphics kit right on top of them. Normally I’m able to heat and peal stock graphics off, but on this Freeride they were infused.
How its compression in new piston?? I make 30mth and i see 8,1 bar . its corectly?
Where did you get the timing/decking tool? Do you have the supplier or part number? I can't quite read the tool numbers from your video. I need to find one for rebuilding my 2017 Freeride.
I usually get my stuff from RockyMountainATVMC.com. I’ll look at the tool tonight and see if I can see a part number on it for you.
@@tommyjeep Thank you! I've looked on that site before, but never found the tool for the Freeride, but just a KTM 250 which could be (likely is another model (SX).
I test-rode one briefly... 2017 with only 100 hours under the belt. Very very nice to ride on the pegs, slim, light... BUT: the gearbox is crappy, the brakes don't shine and the carb settings were all over the place, that thing never stopped choking on the mids. I went there with cash, ramp and tools to dismount the front wheel and put it in the trunk of my SUV but I left it there.
I didn't enjoy the stock carb either. Adding the Smart Carb with the metering rod really smoothed it out. I ended up selling the bike a couple years ago because I was over-riding it. I'm on a 2020 KTM 300 XC-W now. I'm able to ride the 300 without worrying that I'm bending something.
Hey Thanks for posting - Its hard to find videos on this less-common bike so this is going to help when I do my top end soon. Appreciate it
Even though a few years back, great job with narration. Amazing the stark difference with a purpose built bike. Not to mention e start!! I too also have a KX 450 so I completely get it
Thanks Jeffromoto, I always feel weird doing to voice over. I don’t have the Freeride anymore, but it was a great bike on trails like this. I have the KTM 300 now, a little heavier, a little wider, a little taller, but still works on the technical trails.
I like the bar to brake the bead. Any chance you would describe to someone the desigh?
Most tire shops push down on the bead to break it. I’m doing the same thing by lifting the tire into the bar to beak it. The bar has a mount point on the lift so it’s held rigid. I also have to have a chain from the bar to the lift post to keep the bar from flexing out. It’s pretty booty-fab, but it gets the job done.
@@tommyjeep thanks I will be making one for my lift.
thinking of going up this weekend, are there post marks for trail 4, or should I take a map?
There are post markers for most of it. There are a few intersections that aren’t obvious, so a map wouldn’t hurt. The trails have a nice flow to them, so even if you make a “wrong” turn, you’re not going to leave civilization.
Was just out on T#4 last weekend. It's a fun loop. Along with T#2.
Trail #4 is fun when the weather is cool. It’s very exposed, so HOT in the summer.
IMO, trail #6 is not super hard. Hard, yes. But (again, IMO) not as hard as some would have you believe. There are a few sections that do require careful navigation that really give the overall trial its black-diamond designation. It's a loop, so there's only one way in & out. You can ride it clockwise, or counterclockwise. I believe most people prefer taking the right turn at the "start" (where the sign is). That all being said, I personally wouldn't attempt to ride it solo. But, that's just me.I've ridden it several times - both on my Husaberg 570 and my Husky 350.
I agree, It’s no Erzberg Rodeo, but it’s one of the more challenging trails in Foresthill. There are a couple of spots you can cut out of the trail early if there’s issues (Deadwood, Michigan Bluff), but there are very long sections with no escape route.
@@tommyjeep Came across your video because we recently acquired a 2016 Freeride 250R for my wife. This also made me realize that I never rode trail #6 last year! Didn't want to deal with the bridge outage. Have you ridden it recently? Funny thing is, where you dirt-napped (around the 50m mark) is the same place I did (51m 10s) last time I was out.
@@thebogeyman We rode trail #6 counter clock-wise last year to see the crushed bridge. Haven’t been on the trail since. I haven’t heard anything about the bridge in a long time, but I suspect it’s going to take years to get it fixed.
@@thebogeyman After completing this trail in 2022 before the fire and crashing and rolling down to the river at the bridge, I said fuck this. I'm too old for this shit and joined the Nevada County Woods Riders Club.
@@LuckyNikitaBoba Well, I also belong to NCWR. I've been on the trail and said "fuck this", but somehow, I keep finding myself back there. Although, not last season...
You guys are amazing. Just rode some of that loop. You are fearless.
Hey man! I broke yet another phone and lost all of my contacts. Send me a message.
Hey Tommy, it’s 2021 and I am looking to buy a ktm 250r freeride but can’t seem to find one. Any ideas?
Hey Dylan, Craiglist or Cycle Trader are probably your best options. New ones are electric now. 2014 - 2018 ( I think ) are 2-stroke. Sorry I can’t help more.
@@tommyjeep Thanks, I’ll have to look. 2018 is actually the 4-stroke version!
Fun place to ride
Hey man is this geoegtown ontario?
Nope, Georgetown, California.
This track look really good ,,, ✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻
Nicely and neatly done, thanks for sharing, the Free ride sounded like Mozart's 5th symphony
Nice video. Looks like the engine conked but at least at the right time. Cheers
Thanks! Yeah, the engine quit at an opportune time. Glad it didn’t happen when that truck was on my “runway”. 😀
Cool video! I need to get one of those things. Nice rig too
Thanks! It’s a fun camera to play with. You’ve got a ton of videos, I have to start checking them out.
@@tommyjeep it does look like a nice camera. Super steady with the gimbal. I’m thinking about getting one for next season and might try putting away the iPhone. My wife’s new iPhone shoots amazing video so I’ve been trying to get her to film more but I still love to film so this might be perfect. We’ve got a lot of Colorado trail videos and Moab too. Still have so many more trails to run! We want to make it out your way, maybe next summer to hit the Rubicon! Happy wheeling! - Geoff
Anyone know why the dirt is so red in Foresthill? debating whether in need to clean the mud off my rig asap
I always clean quickly after a ride here. We did a soil sample at our house and it’s very high in Sulfur. Like off the charts high. Manganese is also abnormally high, but not nearly as high as Sulfur.
Hey great video of riding in an area I recently discovered. I'm planning on going tomorrow for Thanksgiving Day. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this area section of riding is closer to Tehachapi, not the 14 freeway? I'd love to check out that side one day as it appears I'm missing out on some other good areas. I believe I've come across that fault, but on the other side. Anyways, keep on riding man!
Yep, you’re right, closer to Tehachapi. It’s an awesome area with a variety of terrain. Have fun tomorrow!
I subscribed. look forward to your next video!
I subscribed. look forward to your next video!
Where exactly is this, need places closer to home to ride. It looks like good fun
It’s in Georgetown, CA. Look for Mace Mill. That’s the staging area. You can get a map at the ranger station, or online. There’s a lot of trails out there. They’re more technical than your typical trail.
@@tommyjeep ohhhhh, shit lol, im in ontario canada, i seen georgetown and was like "that city is 30 min away from me" lol
Ha, so not very local. If you're ever in NorCal, let me know and I'll show you some good trails. Not everything is on fire here in spite of what the news says. :)
@@tommyjeep not very local at all lol.
Hello, I just bought a 2017 ktm 250r motorcycle, do you put gasoline mixed with oil in it? or just gasoline? Greetings, I hope you can answer my question.
Yes, you mix 2-stroke oil in the gas jug before fueling the bike. The manual calls for 80:1 mixing, but I found that to be too lean. I went to 60:1 and found the piston ring to last much longer. Congrats on the purchase. You’ll love this bike!
@@tommyjeep How can I put coolant on the ktm 250r motorcycle? I am new I hope you can help me x2.
@@tommyjeep Thanks!!
Coolant goes in the radiator. You’ll find the radiator cap below the handlebars. Just top it off with anti-freeze (or water). You don’t want to be all water, or stuff can rust inside.
A few years back me and my buddy were up at forestall riding trail 5 and he was having the same experience as you, especially at that first section climbing up that rock. He was on an old 650 with no electric start so needless to say, it made for some laughs on my part hahaha
Hi, I have a Ktm 250r freeride and the tank is broke, you know where I can find one ? It’s a little hard to find parts for this bike :/
I never had to buy a tank for mine. Have you tried AOMC? Any chance you can mend your tank?
Great Swimming Hole! But I think Poppy needs to teach Sophie how to swim.
Sophie CAN swim, just chooses not to :)
I would have lasted about 8 seconds on that bike route... impressive riding! And nice driving, Lucas!
One of my favorites. I'm gonna come see you soon.
Nice ride! Kym kicks butt on that little Honda 👍 cheers! 🍻
Looked like a good day!
It was a very good day. Now we just need this virus to dissipate so we can get back out there.
Dang, that was my birthday... I might be in the area for a while. Got my Ape stashed nearby too.
Let me know if you’re going out riding. Foresthill is under a couple feet of fresh snow, but Georgetown might be open.
Damn so pretty dusty the whole then?
It’s either raining or dusty, no in between around here.
That whole thing at the end was unexpected and quite humorous. Nice logging hopping btw.
Thanks Mr. Shady. Glad someone enjoyed it. It took longer to film the end than it did all the rest of the video 😀
you guys make it look easy!
It is easy
It’s been a while since I visited your channel, but I remember you had a top end problem with your Freeride a while ago where the top end had to be replaced. Did you end up finding out what caused that issue? The ring broke off or caught the exhaust port I think it was. Mainly curious. I’m going to do a top end rebuild on my Freeride this season and was curious about how that could have happened. For a ring to catch the exhaust port I guess the notch on the piston that prevents the open end of the ring from moving towards the exhaust side must have broken off and cause the ring open end to catch on the exhaust?
In the Freeride manual, it specifies mixing oil and gas 80:1, so that’s what I was doing. It also specified replacing the ring and piston at 100 hours, that I didn’t do. At 140 hours the ring wore thin and the exhaust port peeled it out of it’s seat and the ring got trapped between the piston and cylinder wall. That damaged the cylinder wall enough it had to be replaced. The repair went perfect, but pricey. I now premix at 60:1 and have noticed significantly less ring wear. I replaced the ring and piston again at 227 hours (87 hours on the new ring) and the wear was almost non-existent. It’s my opinion that 60:1 is the way to go.
tommyjeep 🙏 Greatly appreciate this knowledge.
@@tommyjeep great insight Tommyjeep - thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I've always liked the Freeride 250r concept. I ride 250xcw. I'm currently looking at the Freeride for wife and play and loaner bike. My question is how are you changing the mixture ratio? I thought these bikes are oil injected. Thanks in advance
The 2016 Freeride 2-stroke is not oil injected. Gas and oil is premixed in the gas can.
Trail ## recommendations for beginner??? Heading up tomorrow.
For a beginner, trails 1, 3 and 7 are the best. Trail 2 is a little tougher. Trail 4 is probably next due to how rocky it is. Trail 5 is pretty tough, and trail 6 is the toughest of the numbered trails.
One loop? Was it a full day of riding just edited to 30 something minutes? Asking cause i dont see the point of coming up for only 30 minutes of riding.
I usually go out for a few hours. This is several loops edited to 30 minutes.
Yep, I’ve got videos running trail 6 in each direction you can check out.
Awesome. Enjoyed every minute.
Nice video of the teardown and reassembly. I recommend a NGK solid top plug, the aluminum top sheds dust in the cap and can also come loose on the threads, two annoying problems to chase. Also debris from the broken ring will not end up in the oil because the oil is just for the transmission. The debris could end up in the bottom end. I can't believe how much the rings were worn, that's crazy. Good idea increasing the premix oil, it seems based on the ring wear it could use it.
Thanks for the comments. I’ll look into the NGK plug you mentioned. I recently changed out the piston and rings again. I had about 90 hours on them. I didn’t have even half the wear on these rings which I attribute to going to 60:1.
@@tommyjeep I just checked and if you are running the stock NGK BR7ES (5122), the solid top version is NGK 6615. Rockauto usually has the lowest price but you can find them many places, around $1.50. It sounds like the increase in premix oil made a huge improvement, glad to hear! I wonder if the riding style many people are taking is a bit different with more sustained higher rpm than the normal trials bike that idles more? I'm considering a 250 XCW or 250R Freeride as a next bike, found your video when doing some research.
Thanks for the cross reference. I’ll get that plug ordered. I don’t know if you’re aware, but they don’t make the 2-stroke 250r Freeride anymore. I believe with the emission standard changes, it’s not worth putting fuel injection on this bike. The current Freeride is a 4-stroke 250f. Are you thinking of a used 250r? I definitely push this bike harder than it’s designed for. I’m looking at the 300 TPI to augment the fleet. Just need to win the lottery. I think the 300 probably matches my riding style better. The Freeride is a blast to goof around on super technical stuff, so I don’t see ever getting rid of it.
@@tommyjeep Yes, I saw the 250r are no longer made so I would need to go used, but that is ok. I like the idea of more technical riding and I'm not blasting across the desert so I think it would be enough. I am also interested in a newer counterbalanced 250 2 stroke, TPI or not. I'll keep looking and see if either come up. I think a 300 is more power than I need after riding both at the last demo day.
Thanks for your posts Tommyjeep - I have a 2017 and the first thing I am doing is getting the same carb setup you have. I loathe the fueling set up that comes stock. Thanks again, will be following your adventures!
Thank you for the nice comments, Mitch! The SmartCarb has been an awesome upgrade to the bike and I strongly recommend it.
@@tommyjeep TommyJeep did you add a map switch to your freeride? If you did would you suggest it?
I have not added a map switch. I've never heard that there's a second map that can be used. Also, every 2nd mapping I've heard of on other bikes lowers power to increase traction. The Freeride is already under-powered in my opinion. It's no rocket ship :)
Hello. I have the same bike and have never done a top end. I’ve always run 40:1 and haven’t fouled a plug yet. Do you recall how many miles or hours your bike had when this issue happened? I’m still about 120psi.
The ring peeled at 140 hours. The book says replace the ring and piston at 100 hours. I always ran 80:1 until this happened, which is what is called for in the book. I now run 60:1.
WOW ! AWESOME. GREAT job. PLEASE excuse my ignorance, is the 250r a 2 or 4 stoke? I believe them to be a 4 stroke? (Please reply) Many thanks and REALLY enjoyed the vid.
Terry Vincent - Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video. The Freeride 250r is a two stroke. It’s a unique bike that kind of sounds like a 4-stroke. On the trail people often ask if it’s 2 or 4, so you’re not the first to ask. The Freeride 350 and the 2019 Freeride 250f are 4 strokes.
@@tommyjeep Thank you so Very much for taking the time and effort to reply Tommy. I do Appreciate that. Hav a gd 1! Regards from 'OZ'. (Australia)
Nice Video. Like the footage with that gimbal. Is it weird that I feel a sense of nostalgia watching your rig in action because I watched you build it several pictures at a time back on JA? Glad to see it in action.
I recall you have a KTM Freeride 250R. How’s your experience been with the bike since the last video you made about it? Reliable?
The bike is very reliable. I've got about 3,600 miles of tough trails on it. Having to do the top end every 100 hours seems early compared to other models though. I'm within about 20 hours of having to do it again. I just replaced the battery as the original one just won't hold a charge anymore. Overall I think the bike is fantastic!
Not sure how you think grindings from the worn ring will get into the gearbox oil. The engine and gearbox are not connected by oil feed.
Good to know, thanks. I thought the crankshaft dipped into the oil. I believe 4-strokes are that way.
