Robert Beadell - Three Sketches
An underappreciated gem in the quartet repertoire. Lot's of great ideas presented without any filler.
Three original pieces for Four Part Tuba Quartet or Large Ensemble by Robert Beadell.
Commissioned by the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble, R. Winston Morris, director. Published by The Brass Press, Manuscripts for Tuba Series, Copyright 1974.
I've owned this piece for a few years, but the published edition is prohibitively difficult to read. The handwritten score is uneven and messy and the harmonic spellings can be hard to parse. I created this digital edition for my own use to address the readability of the piece. The harmonic spellings are not changed.
0:00 - I. Fast Four
2:24 - II. Slowly in 2
4:29 - III. Quickly
Performed and recorded myself. Edition created for my personal use, shared here for educational use as allowed under the Fair Use doctrine.

All ten tuba parts included! Went with a different, better recording for this one. I wasn't sure the clearest way to present this with in this format with two simultaneous parts, I hope it's not too confusing to read. Tubas used: Meinl Weston 45S Eastman EBB-825VG

This recording is so unbelievably flat; if you told me they recorded the brass in an industrial freezer, I'd believe you. I had my main tuning slide pulled about 3 inches. This was not a problem in the first part of the same recording. Both Tubas - Eastman EBB-825VG I created the edition of this part shown, and performed both parts.

1st part of the symphony is done, and it's by far more tuba-dense than the second part. Lots of fun stuff in this movement. Very tuba-forward. The triplet 16ths are significantly more difficult to get sounding clear-ish than the following triplet 32nds. 1st Tuba - Meinl Weston 45S & Eastman EBB-825VG 2nd Tuba - Eastman EBB-825VG I created the edition of this part shown, and performed both parts.

This movement is probably the most tuba-heavy by percentage of the time played. It also features the tubas prominently in exposed sections. This recording I'm playing over has some wacky intonation, the tubas at one point play an F flat as an F natural, about 30 cents flat. The more I do this, the more frustrated I get with my F's tuning. 1st Tuba - Meinl Weston 45S 2nd Tuba - Eastman EBB-825VG...

The third movement of "In a Nutshell" by Percy Grainger, for orchestra. It serves at a fairly complete look at orchestral colors offered by MuseSounds. I found a solution to the harp gliss playback (it’s impractical for notation but will give the desired pitches on the harp glisses): create a new key signature with the accidentals that you want to play in the gliss and under properties for playback of the gliss, do diatonic. I would change that key signature just for the harp part and for the passages I want those notes in the gliss to play for then change it back to the original key signature. Until MuseScore creates a new system for their harp glisses, that’s the best way that I have found to get the desired sound.

    The main beef I've had with trumpets is quick, articulated passages just not 'speaking' (think alternating eighth with two sixteenths, ~150bpm, staccato - they just do not sound in the playback). EDIT: UNLESS I dial up their volume way above what it supposed to be - anything under forte just doesn't render.

    I've been trying to arrange brass ensembles (mostly quartets and quintets) and the horn really is one of the best instruments in the set right now. The trumpet doesn't go high enough for the fact that its tone is so emblematic of the marching band. E's and F's above the staff are very important for solo, marching, and jazz stuff (and even the G and A). And the bone just struggles quality-wise. Euphonium is definitely missing, though at lower dynamics, the Horns setting seems to fit pretty well the sound. I really hope the next iteration emphasizes dynamic interpretation and mix if they can.

    i.m not a pro - hobbyist, but looking to do a large Star Trek medley import (84 -pages) to convert from orchestra to concert band. Looking at Dorico 4 as well. But this is really interesting - and the huge support network from lots of people has a big advantage. Will do other stuff as well, but want to get onto something and stick with it. Which one do I choose? Dorico has a LOT going for it, but the community here has everything going for it.

    • @marshalltrogers
      @marshalltrogers Рік тому

      Having extensively used both programs, my advice is to use whichever you are more familiar with if you are comfortable with both. If you already own Dorico, then please use it. It has a much more developed system for notation input than MS. If you don't already own Dorico, then use MS. Either way, MusicXML allows for limited transmission between the two platforms, so if you have it available in one program, it isn't an ordeal to move it to the other. Dorico has, in my experience, worse issues than MS with handling very large scores. This is not to say that MS handles large scores well. The back half of this project required me to write out the parts individually, then copy-paste them into the full score. Dorico, with a 40-part score, took several seconds to respond to individual note inputs, however, so it's whichever works better for you. The communities for either are really less important than available documentation support for these programs. I use three programs for my music notation, depending on the project: Musescore and Dorico for faster turn-around and lower quality requirements, Lilypond for longer projects or anytime published quality is a chief concern. In my experience learning these, nothing matters more than their published support documentation. I hope this sufficiently answers your question, and best luck with your work!

    Wonderful analysis! (Also props for transcribing the whole thing!) Quick tip at 3:19, If you hold CMD (for mac) or CTRL (for windows) and then drag in the desired time signature, it'll only apply to the staff that you drag it to, thus creating polymeter.

    • @marshalltrogers
      @marshalltrogers Рік тому

      Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. The local polymeter technique works for instances where the barlines will line up (like 12/8 and 4/4), but doesn't work for scenarios where two parts of the score will have mismatched barlines. As a matter of fact, the same technique of using CTRL (CMD) for local items works for barline styles and key signatures, both of which are used in this score. It is technically possible to fake the complex polymeter by using many invisible barlines and a bunch of horizontal displacement. I've done a recreation of the score for "The Unanswered Question" before using that method. Native support is still not possible with Musescore, and I've only ever gotten good results with Lilypond, but it's a rare enough use case to be a non-priority.

    I find the articulation sin the woodwinds has an odd 'scoop' sound. The wider the interval, and the more sudden the jump, the worse the scoop. On the clarinet and saxophone, it sounds like a junior high player. On the flute, oboe, bassoon, it just sounds impossible. Forums say the oboe was fixed in October, but ... not on *my* MS4. I like so many of the improvements, but I need to be able to play demo files, and since there's no 'convert' utility to load my MS4 into MS3. (I use aegean orchestra soundfont, and most of the winds samples are as good as MS4... although dynamics lack). Sooo.. I'm still working in MS3. I hope the fixes for the most egregious problems happen fairly soon.

    • @marshalltrogers
      @marshalltrogers Рік тому

      The scooping is pretty egregious, and not only in the woodwinds. All the winds and strings have had this exact problem, and it does sound oddly amateur. It's definitely intentional, these things have programmed in to do that, but it's a very odd design choice and one I hope they move away from. I spend way too much time trying to get a clear sound on large intervals in my practice to hear it in playback meant to approximate live professionals.

    Orchestras play it usually different from the score, to get that result you would have to put a dot on the note in the second bar and write shorter notes in bar 6 and 7, for instance. I notice when I write music how the playback in musescore 4 forces me to be more specific with my dynamics, sometimes that is a good thing.

    • @marshalltrogers
      @marshalltrogers Рік тому

      Orchestras play what is written in score pretty exactly; that's how scores work, we play what is written. Musescore isn't producing playback on the fortzandi correctly, sounding more like the staccato sound you mention. I have to disagree about following Musescore playback for how to write dynamics. Musesounds should aim to more accurately recreate dynamic scoring as has existed for literal centuries, we should not be rethinking how we write dynamics to appease the sound bank.

    • @kctier9183
      @kctier9183 Рік тому

      @@marshalltrogers "that's how scores work" No, you are wrong, you are so so wrong. The composers don't often understand how the instruments work and write hard or even impossible passages; it is the job of the conductor and musicians to make those notes playable. This is not my opinion, it is the opinion of Hector Berlioz, who wrote the famous book about orchestration. As far as I remember, Richard Strauss did not disagree with these claims. Also there is these things called "interpretation" and "style" and "tradition", which is why we in the first place play music with orchestras instead of computers every time. About Sibelius and Finlandia, this is the first time I, for example, heard those last notes of the trumpet fanfare without staccato, and I have heard this piece a lot since I was a 8-or-something years old fan of Sibelius. Compare, for example ua-cam.com/video/qOSaT6U4e-8/v-deo.html where the piece is performed by the most prestigious Finnish orchestras and the choir of Sibelius Academy in the opening ceremony of the new main concert hall of Helsinki. I believe their version is more correct than yours. I mean, this is one of the most played and known tune by Sibelius, he certainly heard it performed dozens of times during his lifetime, and the tradition of how this piece is supposed to be played is based on that. We can also listen to recordings from the time when Sibelius was still alive, and they played the fanfare with staccato back then also. Here's an over 100 years old recording: ua-cam.com/video/kR7skK_1Pjw/v-deo.html You have to accept that the staccato, not present in the score, is the correct way to play the fanfares and your Musescore rendition is wrong. How could anyone argue that a mechanical interpretation by a computer is more accurate than the version we the real humans know and recognize and love?
