A fairly calm moment in Rochelle, Illinois during the Union Pacific #4014 Big Boy 2024 Tour weekend. This is after the UP event wrapped up on Saturday and well before the general public descended en masse upon the site the following morning.

Ed Dickens, head engineer, fields a few questions from railfans as Union Pacific's "Big Boy" #4014, the world's largest steam engine, stops in Rochelle, Illinois during its 2024 tour. Big Boy dates from 1941 and logged over a million miles before it was retired in 1961. Now beautifully restored, this locomotive draws hordes of admirers wherever it goes!

Great idea! However, the UA-cam audio library limits the use of sound clips to one minute in length, sometimes even less. Winterreise is definitely on the to-do list, so stay tuned!

'We tried to make it there Sunday. But the mile-n-a-half back-up of dead-stopped vehicles on west bound I-88 before the exit told the story. With another 2 miles to go once off the highway, no way at 12 noon were we going to get in before 3pm. I smiled inside and out by the realization that so many of us appreciate this type of experience. I have fond memories of riding coaches behind steam locomotives back in my youth. We waved to the spirit of all that traveled to see this historic legend as we passed by, and planned for the next time we might have the chance.
This is a very sweet and generous sentiment. Yes, as we headed back to Chicago, we too saw that 1.5 to 2-mile line of cars waiting to exit I-88, and our jaws were hanging open! It was nuts! However, everything at the railyard was extremely well-organized. Once you got onto the UP property, they had plenty of staff directing people to the ample parking, complimentary water, etc. A lot of people of all ages were coming on foot--strollers, mobility scooters, etc., and no sidewalks in that area! That's devotion!
