Lots of autistic people work jobs, get married, have kids, and live independently (or with a partner), just like allistic people often do. Many autistic people, especially women, are now being diagnosed in middle age precisely because we were “too functional” to be considered candidates for the diagnosis as children, when the definition was much more restrictive. I have done/am doing all of the above. Someone might protest that my IQ is very high, which is true; okay, well, my daughter, whose IQ is much more average, has benefitted greatly from speech and occupational therapies, and more recently from eyeglasses and medication for her ADHD, and has learned to walk, talk, use the toilet, read, write, do math, dress herself, brush her teeth, and many other useful skills, just more slowly than would be expected. I am very proud of all the work she has put into her accomplishments! So no, don’t despair because your child has an autism diagnosis. There is so much that can be done to help and accommodate this! 😊👍❤️
