In this video I demonstrate how to create and use a soft chuck to hold your piece centered on the wheel for stable trimming. Narrow-necked forms are notoriously difficult to trim upside down on the wheel because they want to topple over as soon as you apply pressure with the trimming tool. For years, I struggled using a bisque-fired chuck that I held on the wheel with three clay lugs. I found that the dry and rigid chuck did't hold my piece firm enough for the whole process. It would jump around and get off center, leading to frustration and take a lot of time. Eventually I discovered that throwing a soft chuck on the wheel and drying slightly was the perfect solution.
