0:15 Tis very weird, to me it outlines a geological grid, the coloured sections are anomalous to ? mineralization? Retired now but the spark for science and how each thing finds it place, at times closely associated with others. Arsenopyrite is a companion as is mercury being proximal to gold in specific deposition environments. You got to be a Shirlock Holmes and absolutely loving it to peruse the quest for understanding of how this gets here, a gift for the earth?

I'm the guy referred to below who, along with my partner, owned this mine from 1966 to 1968. The Ace of Diamonds was not its original name. The mine was claimed again sometime in the 1970's or later. The so-called small stope referred to in the comment from 7 years ago was actually a cave in. We excavated 155 carloads of waste at the end of the workings and found nothing further. Supposedly the tunnel ran another 175 feet past that and there was supposed to be a raise connecting this level with another one higher up the hill. Not so. We also excavated the upper adit and it had very bad shale rock and again, no evidence of a connection to any other workings. We checked it out briefly and quickly got out of there! That was the end of our activity. I appreciate the mine tour provided by this video. Oh, and I did graduate from the U of Washington in 1970 with a BS in mining engineering. Did an obligatory stint in the Navy and then spent 28 years in the mining industry. Retired in 2000. For me the only money to be made in mining was taking advantage of my company's savings and investment program and growing that over time so that when I retired we could live a comfortable retirement. For light in the mine, we used an auto headlamp and a car battery. It would last the time we spent on a weekend dig. We each had a mine car and when loaded, the other guy would wait until the load passed him and he would rerail his car and start digging. There was no need for light during the trip with the mine car, we just pushed them along in the dark. It was a brief but little bit of exposure to what mining was like.

Wow that is so cool. I remember going with my parents with some friends of ours to Monte Cristo as a kid back in the mid to late 1970's I do remember seeing a mine up on a hill from the store front and we tried to hike up to that mine. But I don't we even made it. Also there was a mine not far from the Big Four Picnic area right on the road that hidden by ferns and I would go check it out. I could only see inside but I couldn't go inside. Thanks for sharing your video.

Hi, This reminds me so much of my own life. Im from an old mining family in Australia. Where I lived as a child was a mountain out the back of our house with family mines from 1916ish & earlier. These were all abandoned & there are no roads, tracks or maps. Im the only one of my generation that knows where they are., I remember picking metal chunks out of the rock walls as a kid. They mined silver, lead, gold, molybdenite from super hard light grey granite. The last time I was there was 1991, we found 2 of them but there are others still in the area. We were tramping through the bush just like you are here in this video. Cheers Daniel.

This location was accessible by car back in the '90s. I went there a couple time around '94-'95. I drove in using my old Jeep CJ7. The road wasn't bad, but I was till surprised when I got to there and found a class C motorhome and a Honda sedan in the parking area. On one of my visits there was a guy in the river using a vacuum dredge. I did a little prospecting and found a small flake of gold about 1/8th inch round when popped open some cracked bedrock. At the time that section of the river was open to public prospecting. I don't know if it still is today. I never tried to enter the tunnel. I found the opening for the tunnel exit, but the up-river tunnel entrance was choked by lots of old logs that had been washed down the river. It's a very neat place.

Climbing the shaft up the ore chute must have been one helluva trip, I tried to climb past the cave in at the end, wedged in the rotten timbers and soggy clay it didnt look passable however there's a lot of water pouring out. There's also another small opening in the cliffs.

It's been a long time since I read Hodges' report on the claim. The placer workings there predated later focus upon mostly lode workings when the book was published. I knew that the miners had diverted the river flow, but I actually didn't recall that it was done via tunneling. Somehow, I had formed the notion that it was a trench. Your video was informative. However, I will not try to emulate your method of exploring in shorts through underbrush that harbors devil's club patches...ditto the yiipes!

@@NWUEmines My copy is a Shorey's Bookstore "facsimile edition" (reprint) that cost me over $30 in 1970. That was a princely sum when I earning only $2.50 per hour doing nasty fiberglass laminating work for boat builders in the Marysville area. With what you say about an original, I'm glad that mine was not such, as I would have severely diminished its value with all the underlining and highlighting I've applied to it pages over the years!
