How to Break your Film - 2001 a Space Odyssey vs. Casting JonBenet
Climaxes in stories usually involve some revelation, and character growth, all uncovered in a fever-pitch moment of heightened emotions and stakes. But some films lean so far into the climatic moments that they become particularly evocative and distinct. In this video, we will discuss what that looks like and highlight two films that pull it off masterfully.

Singin' in the Rain is an excellent film and your review is a good one. However you fail to mention that the majority of the songs in the film are from MGM's earliest movie musicals from the 1929-30 period. Specifically the signature song: "Singin' in the Rain" which is also the signature song and first seen and heard in "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" which premiered in June, 1929. In that film the sequence is filmed in black & white with Cliff Edwards & chorus, then reprised in technicolor for the finale of the film showing virtually all the MGM celebrities of the late silent/early talkie era. These are all important points to consider.

What a lovely video essay on a luminous film! I disagree on one point, though: 2:03 "Beautiful Girls" the most forgettable number?? Sir, how dare you! It is riotously cheesy, bonkers, trippy, satirical fun! In my family, we sing and quote from it as much as possible. The fashion showcase is a scream. "The judge will be im-PRESSED!!!!" I contend "You were meant for me" is the most forgettable... mildly pretty, utterly insipid... highlighting the lack of romantic chemistry between Debbie and (ick) Gene. Singin' might be my favorite film, but this sequence is when I go to the kitchen and make a snack plate. I rarely subscribe to channels, but you've got me! Keep these coming.

You, sir, owe it to yourself and everyone else to make more of these videos. Your critique is substantial and enriches the ways in which we contemplate the medium of cinema. Like all good criticism, your work goes beyond just ‘liking’ or ‘unliking’ a film: it unravels the essential quality of the thing and makes it all the more palpable to the senses.

One of the best recaps of a movie I have ever seen. Major kudos to you! The narration and commentary on the plot devices, songs and amazing dance numbers perfectly describes encapsulates the utter joy of the movie. Perfectly selected clips to accompany it as well. I just saw it on the big screen for the first time on Friday night. I am ready to see it again, and only wish it hadn't been a one-night-only engagement, as part of the theater's "classic Fridays" series. Last Saturday they made an exception, and I saw Easter Parade as a 4 PM matinee the day before Easter, another incredible musical, with two other major talents ... the always debonair Fred Astaire, and the lovely and incredibly-talented Judy Garland, at the height of her talent. It's going to be hard to watch these classics now outside of a theater, but I am thankful that I had the opportunity to experience the films as they were meant to be seen ... on the big screen! 💫

I don't think there's a need to put down spotlight like that to make your point. Those scenes you pointed out, to me, worked incredibly well and did help the movie's realism and immersion. And the fact that the "dramatic" moments were sparse helped with their impact. While I get the comparison with the wire, the tv show comes of as way more dramatized than the movie. Also you analysis of woman under the influence is very surface level. The techniques used for that film are the ones that give it it's realism. The actors had way more room to play. In comparison with spotlight in which every line of dialogue feels like it serves a purpose, every scene moves the story forward. Without having big scenes, the movie keeps you engaged at all times. It's, like you mentioned, as if you are watching a newspaper article in movie form. How poetic is that? The style and the look of the movie is intentional at all times and it's kept going through the whole run time. The director doesn't resort to using gimmicks for those big emotional scenes. Idk I feel like I'm glazing spotlight now lmao

Gena Rowlands and John Cassavettes are without a doubt my favorite “Hollywood” couple. He was such a brilliant director and he knew his wife and her potential so well. of course, she’s a brilliant actress of her own accord in every single performance… But with her husband directed her? She was over the top phenomenal… She’s a real actress my favorite actress only second two Ellen Burstyn… I’ve been an actress my whole life. And it makes me sad. What passes as acting these days… If people really want to see what acting is about? REAL acting do yourself a favor and watch this movie… “A woman under the influence” or watch Ellen Burstyn in “Requiem for a dream”… Jodie Foster, in “the accused” and of course “silence of the lambs” are right up there too especially the part in silence of the lambs where is, she is explaining her traumatic childhood when she tried to save the lamb from the farm to Dr. Lecter.… Jodie Foster wasn’t supposed to cry for that scene but she did and you can how much that memory still haunts her character. That little part of vulnerability won her the Oscar. It sickens me, literally sickens me that Ellen Burstyn lost to Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich”… I know it’s all politics, but I’ve never seen such a real, haunting performance, lose out to such a over the top, mid level “new Hollywood“ performance by someone who is really more of a movie star that an actress. If you put Julia’s performance on its own? And just look at it for what it is, it’s not a horrible performance and it’s definitely the best that Julia Roberts has done but honestly that’s not saying much. But when you put it up against Ellen and requiem ? It’s like comparing the Sistine chapel to a paint by numbers….One is art and one is contrived. Still bothers me to this day.

Nice analysis! This is my mom's favorite movie - so I've seen in 6-7 times. I don't mind because, unlike many musicals, it is (as you say) infinitely rewatchable. You're right that the songs don't further the plot at all - most of the time that bothers me, but not with this one. The whole "Broadway Melody" rewrite had nothing to do with the flop "Dueling Cavaliers" - but who cares?
