The glitchy synth and piano production of the Polyrhythmic music album REVEALED!
Переглядів 37Місяць тому
I go deep into the processing, programming and production techniques for the synths and piano parts of my Polyrhythmic music album. I look really pink - I don't know why, sorry about that. Let me know if this kind of info is useful, understandable - it's hard for me to know! Lots of gear used in this vid so here it is broken down in case it flies past too fast: DAW - Reaper Synths - Arturias Pi...

This new album is a fusion of golden-era Warp Records vibes and the minimalist orchestration of Steve Reich. This album is crafted for listeners seeking complex, yet captivating sounds, combining unconventional tuning systems, rhythmic phasing, glitch edits, and the absence of typical time signatures. With no steady beat, melody, or traditional song structure, the experience is designed to blur...

Created a lovely little Kontakt instrument inspired @TheCrowHillCo's gestures series - slide ebow guitar that moves up and down by an octave (also done one that goes up a fifth) transformed into lush shifting pads. Mixes beautifully with strings and synths too.

Ozone 10 to 11 comparison on orchestral track
Finally a video that's not about Ozone 11 mastering... hip hop.
yummy
Got the notification for this as I was driving. It is the perfect soundtrack for this moody, grey, atmospheric sort of day.
Interesting. Thx for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I stumbled upon this video by accident and have learned so much from it. I wish you could create a follow-up that incorporates more melodic sounds layered over the drums to produce these distinct polyrhythmic soundscapes. I checked out the album, and I enjoy it a lot. Very inspiring stuff. Thank you!
Thank you, yes planning more videos! Despite being pretty handy with music gear I really struggle with making videos, but I'm working on it!
Have done one on the synths and piano programming here ua-cam.com/video/zkwIJnDzRCU/v-deo.html 😎
Nice stuff! reminds me of some of the more minimal and abstract track from Plastikman
Thank you, although he has better hair than me 😅
Tim Smith was a pure genius. So underated. Hats off for this translation. 👏
Thank you! He was indeed!
That 5/16 killed me. I don't know how to count it. 🥺
yeah it's really fast. I programmed this so it was fairly straightforward to do once I figured out the pattern, but I've tried actually playing it and it's way too fast for me. The real hero is Bob on drums in the live versions as the band really rely on him to hold that down and it's tough, takes a lot of confidence to come in that hard on those beats! In the verses where there is the pauses you just can count it as five on and five off...so you play five then wait five.
This album is great, I listen to it on Bandcamp too. I'll be on a cross country (US) road trip in a few weeks. Are you on Spotify by any chance? I'd love to download it there and play it while I'm on the road.
Now on the Spotifies! open.spotify.com/album/3M6gnfJBeJkiMKwX2xTL0y
@@DaveGrahamMusic Thank you!!
on spotify ?
No not yet, I'll look into it , thanks! To be honest my audience is so tiny that I didn't think there was any point - I literally have 2 or 3 people who listen to my stuff 😂
You should absolutely reconsider. This is brilliant and I’m extremely picky. Please release more music and work towards getting it on Spotify. I love this.
@HarrisonWard123 Thanks I appreciate that! I've submitted to streaming services including "The Spotifies" tonight so hopefully it will appear shortly. 😎
Have submitted it to streaming services tonight...will update when it appears!
@@DaveGrahamMusic the artist who have less than 10 peoples who listen, a passion to me !
this is so cool!!! :D
thank you!
no point in staying so long on chords. no string score is played like that! I don't like the sound of this bank at all. thanks anyway. plus all the presets look the same. très chiant
fair enough, thank for watching anyway!
Reichs New York Counterpoint meets Digitonal. Nice one! Are these real instruments or do you use libraries?
Thank you high praise indeed! These are all libraries, the woodwinds here are from Spitfire Audio's Symphony Orchestra..and it was actually how great they sound that partly inspired the music. Lots of lovely oddities like bass and contra-bass clarinets/bassoons ...quite a bit of alto and bass flute in there too...and I noticed totally by chance that they blended really nicely with synths...
Sick!
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing, this sounds great ❤
thank you!
I'd rather call this syncopated than polyrhythmic. Very nice piece, however I'd argue all music is polyrhythmic to an extent if more than one instrument or noise pattern exists. Nonetheless, that is just semantics and I enjoyed what you made. 🔥
Thank you... I knew someone would open the can of worms of the definition of polyrhythm at some point! I'll be doing some videos on what is going on under the hood in these tracks at some point - syncopation of course but also a lot of other things! But yes it is semantics and the end result is all the matters really - I appreciate your comment!
Ludwig is a genius
Woah. Really cool sounds dude, subbed
thank you very much!
Algorithm blessed me, no curveball, no changeup, just straight gas
thank you, really appreciate it!
Thank you for sharing! This will be a good walking track. There is something very familiar to me here. Are you using hardware effects? "Chorus" effect sounds really familiar. Would love to hear more, here is a sub. Great first impression!
Thanks! No hardware, but I go to great lengths to make things sound full of character, and doing things like the glitchy effects by hand. But what you might be hearing as chorus is pairs of sine tones with slightly different tunings - I used 5 different tunings I think across the album, and it can create woozy, chorusy effect, that might be what the familiar sound is. Happy walking!
hehe thanks!
:)
the reaction I was hoping for!
ngl this reminds me of Aphex Twin
high praise, thank you!!
man, this is great!
thank you!
oh this one's great, I rlly like it ! so underrated
thank you very much!
This is such a lovely piece, thank you for sharing your art
thank you for listening!
This was cool to listen to while high
Glad to be of service 🫡
this is good stuff
Thanks!
Just came across your song on my page, you got yourself a new suscriber ! This is very very good, from the choices of the sounds to the melodies, flawless !
Thank you...and thank you!
Amazing.
Oh my gosh, Dave, this is outstanding. A journey through euphoria that leaves you wanting in the most wonderful way. I can't wait to hear what else you're creating for this album. Your music is still where I go when I need to feel peaceful and safe. ❤ Keep it up.🤩
Thank you! Plenty more coming!
Hello and thank you very much for this :) I own Solo Strings Untamed by Westwood Instruments, Strings Shades by Sonixinema, Orchestral Swarm by Spitfire Audio and wanted something like Blisko by Felt Instruments, but more useable. I think it perfectly matches my expectations for a virtual instrument with more amplitude and modern sound. Do you use it a lot ? I just listened to your composition "Remembered" and subscribed right away.
thanks - I find the Small String Gestures are a bit too active to use as the main strings in tracks, they move around a lot, but they are great for adding texture to other sounds.
@@DaveGrahamMusic Good point! I think I'd use them like this too ;)
Beautiful musical piece! You have a new subscriber ;)
thank you very much :)
Wow, This music took me to another world
thank you!
Bravo 🦜
A round of applause! Thank you sir
Thank YOU!
What do you think of Musescore 4 and Muse Sounds? It's a FOSS notation software, and Muse Sounds takes phrasing, dynamics, etc. into account when generating sound.
Not tried them to be honest I always tend to just work in a DAW these days as I find notation a bit cumbersome to work with unless its for other people to play. Getting notation to sound good in midi is much tougher than just composing straight to midi!
Do a track that blends this Library, Appasionatta, and stray light
I wonder why the countermelody is so buried in the mix
Superb!
Thank you!
That sounds lush!
Thank you :)
Fabulous! It really showcases the melodic awesomeness!
That's great, but why do you show some painted shit instead of the photo you're talking about?
Fair enough, I'll bear it in mind moving forward! I'm a composer and I started making these little vids as a more interesting way to share my music, they are just meant to be fun little nuggets with a soundtrack by me.
@@DaveGrahamMusic Hmm. That makes a lot of difference and a lot of sense. Good luck.
Cooool!!!!!❤
Dude there is no way we have a picture of a planet 12 light years away. We couldn't have a picture of a planet 0.1 light years away. They know a relative size of the planet and they know what it's atmosphere consists of due to light spectroscopy. Light intensity decreases with distance by the inverse square law. We are really seeing mostly the light of the planets star passing through it's atmosphere. That star is a lot more visible than that planet. Look at how hard it is to see Neptune with a damn good telescope from the Earth. And at it's closest pass to Earth, Neptune is about 31.2 astronomical units away, or almost 3 billion miles away. So that means that Neptune at it's closest pass to Earth is only about 0.05% of a light year away. That means that this planet that is 12 lightyears away is about 24,000 times further from the Earth than Neptune. So there is absolutely no way we're getting anything more than spectroscopy data. I'm not trying to downplay it though. Because it's still real fuckin cool that we can do that. Anyway I'm a nerd too bro. lol
www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/articles/cn09p4gxprqo just going by what's reported! Image is in the article, but I don't think it was visible light..they say "imaged" rather than photographed.
If we have images of a fucking black hole then what about a planet
They use some meters-wide telescobes, and James Webb is in space, positioned into a place where almost no sunlight interrupts it, no atmospheric stuff to intervene so it can see a lot more than on Earth.
@@Nl0m I'm aware that the JWST is positioned in the Earth Lagrange point 2 (L2). It also has a 5 layer thermal insulating shield that prevents any light from the Sun and the moon from affecting the telescope. Also by staying in the L2 point it is also shielding itself from the illuminated side of the Earth. This is because it is an infrared-reflecting telescope. Any heat from the sun would compromise the JWST. But any imaging of a planet beyond our solar system is just impossible as of now. And even if we had a telescope that was as wide as the solar system, And a very grainy image of a planet could be seen, there would be no way to have any clarity to the image. Due to too many factors such as the planets orbital velocity and angular momentum of it's rotation, This means that even if we could get a long exposure shot of the planet, it would still be a blur. There is just simply too much expansion of the light sphere between us and the planet, or object in question. Now stars we can see a lot further and in more detail due to their size and the fact that they are light sources. As planets reflect light, they also absorb it, and that diminishes the image. Even Type 1a supernovae (the standard candle) can only be used up to 1 billion light years. Which is a lot but still only a fraction of what we can see. But as of now, the only way we can get clear images from an object in space is to literally go there, take the high def photo, and then stream the data back to earth. And that streaming process takes a while too. Because the data also has to be transmitted through radio waves. Which is just another way of saying light. So it's not like downloading a movie from the internet. I think what will give us the break throughs we need to move our understanding to the next level, will be an ultimate compiling of the data we can gather. The entire electromagnetic spectrum, spectroscopy, and gravitational waves. It would be awesome to see a combination of infrared to gamma ray images and spectroscopy combined with LIGO data. And have that information combined together in temporal simultaneity. That would give us an immense amount of information, without being able to actually put our hands on it.
@@jl12781 That is kind of the reason why trans-neptunians objects are blurry, let alone stars really far away. The images we got in soalr system is mostly out of fly-bys, JWT and HST is for finding new ones. The images we see on shorts are usually artists' expression via the datas collected by the satellites
This was a good video, till you fucked it up with your promotion of your shit music.
Your ai produced images are in no way accurate, please stop this crap.
They are just fun visual things to go along with my original music. I make sure the information is correct, but yes the images sometimes come out a little weird.
Brilliant. Thanks.
Please finish this. This is sooo epic.
Thanks, I stopped as UA-cam started restricting these videos due to copyright issues...but at some point I would like to go through the proper channels and release some stuff like this properly 🙃
