In the city I'm doing about 18 to 19 and on the highway I'm getting between 23-29mpg. I noticed that the mileage improves substantially at sea level, but in Colorado it's not as good, especially going up and down the mountain to ski. Also the camping version's heavier than the standard stepwagon. I had a few stepwagons in Japan and the mileage was always in the twenties to low 30s.

Yeah I sold it maybe 2 years ago. The guy who bought It wrapped it and it looks great! The good news is it's staying in Colorado.

I've driven my Suzuki every turbo van and Subaru Sandbar supercharged van up the icon pass several times without any issues and they go up probably faster than the older delicas do. However, this isn't something I would do everyday as kei vans rev higher than a regular car. I would look at a Mazda bongo diesel turbo as those perform really well in the mountains. Or one of the newer delica space gears. I love the hi ace most of them aren't turbo diesels and so they don't perform that well up the mountains. That being said, the newer Kei vans perform great in the mountains all the time as I use those in Niigata and you can use those everyday. A lot of the newer Kei Vans made after 1999 will perform better as the torque numbers are much higher than the Vans in the from the '90s. They also have better crash protection, airbags, and more seat room

@@LawrenceCamera I'm depending on the 25 year import law, so 1999 is the newest vehicle on my radar. This wouldn't be a daily commute for me, just the occasional weekend trip. Glad to hear it's possible, if maybe a bit taxing on the vehicle. I have not seen many diesel vans (Bongo or otherwise) on the JDM import sites but will keep my eyes open. Other than Sandbar and Suzuki, any other recommendations for a casual camper? Thoughts on the Hijet? I think the Acty would have been perfect if it were a bit bigger, but I am a tall guy and have read that my knees would be squished in the driver seat.

@@gabriellevy1712The Honda Acty is not turbocharged and they're very slow in Colorado. The build quality is great on them and they work great at low altitudes but in Colorado they're just too slow. However, in 1999 a whole bunch of newer Vans were made and you should look at trying to find the Honda vamos turbocharged four-wheel drive van which came out late in 1998. All of the kei vans were updated in 1999 because The laws changed which allowed them to make them a little bigger and safer. Also, they started giving the Vans more torque because they couldn't' raise the horsepower. The Mitsubishi and Daihatsu Vans are good but they tend to rust more and so you don't see them as often.

Sorry, trucks are a pain in the butt to legalize in Colorado so I don't have any of those... Yet. The good news is I sold the van.

It depends on the car. For the Suzuki every there's a lot of parts used by other cars. You can find the cross reference to these parts on most forums. Also you can get the parts on megazip or beforward websites. And some cars like my Honda stepwagon share the entire drivetrain with the Honda CRV and Odyssey so I can get 90% of the parts locally. Driving on the right side isn't hard at all. It doesn't take very long to get used to it. Just practice in a parking lot and in 10 minutes you'll have it.

I got about 30 to 37 miles per gallon. My wife got so much better than me but she drives very slow and shifts at very low rpms.

Sorry I just saw this. The stepwagon field decks vans are rarer than the bongos as Honda only made 1,000 per year or less. Also, they are more popular pop-top van in Japan so prices are higher on them, (especially the four-wheel drive models) so there are less of them offered for sale and the prices are higher. As far as parts availability, you can get any bongo part as there are a lot of companies in the UK supporting the bongo but the issue is that everything will need to be shipped either from Japan or the UK. The Honda step wagon shares the drivetrain with a similar vintage CRV as well as suspension components from the Odyssey. So almost all the engine parts you need are available in the USA. But some parts like front suspension components, windshield, body panels are only available in Japan. There is a stepwagon North America Facebook group that I would suggest you join to get an idea of what it's like to own one of these vehicles. Honestly I find the stepwagon much easier to maintain compared to the bongo. the turbo diesel bongo I owned was definitely better at altitude but the Honda is a much better daily with better visibility. I love them both.

6990 seems like a good price for a turbo Every. Were you able to find one in better condition/ fewer miles for a lesser price?

Thanks, yes I actually sold it and they're putting in the Bongo bleed kit. I actually had it but never installed it but the person who bought it is more mechanically inclined than I am and will be installing the bleed kit right away

That's one thing I really miss on the bongo compared to the stepwagon.i are the curtains as they're so easy to use

The Akabo engine is a complete drivetrain upgrade. Better valves, springs, piston, crank. It doesn't make the car any faster but it's designed to last twice as long as the standard engine. The only way to truly know if an engine is an Akabo one to get a VIN check out of Japan as anyone can paint a valve cover red. If you look it up, I think there's a translated article about it on Wikipedia. The engine was designed as an option for the Akabo delivery co-op in Japan (people could use their vans and deliver part time) so the engine was designed to take more wear and tear.
