My 2018
Переглядів 3155 років тому
It's been one hell of a year. Through the ups and downs, I haven't experienced as much as I have in a single 365 day period; Injury recovery, pizza binges in Italy, BTS concert footy, and finishing my undergrad. You could say 2018 had everything I wanted, but I also had to learn a few things the hard way. In the middle of this year-long recap, I included a bit of conversation I had with my pops...

My 2017 - Vanlife Recap (The Reel)
Переглядів 6206 років тому
Here's to next year- To those who are here for the van - This video contains clips from all of the videos I've made during 2017. (35 in total) Most of it comes from the van build, but I've also included extra stuff like school projects and shorts I've kept on my phone. The truth is, I loved making the van and taking it out on the road, but as a videographer, these "other" videos are my creative...

to those who have emailed me, asking about Big Sir and the van life, much love. I broke my foot in a climbing accident about 2 months ago so I haven't been on the UA-cam grind for a while (injuries kind of suck right?) so I appreciate all of you who have reached out and asked questions on Instagram and in the video comments! Update: Utah is cold. I've since posted up in an apartment so I can re...

I bought a super high gain / high power (5W) wifi "plate". I can sit on top of a hill and use wifi in anyones house within a 5 mile radius. I don't use it anymore as it is highly illegal in the uk, but then most things are.

Not a valid test IMHO. The cantenna is directional and as such you shouldn't be too concerned with APs off axis. However the dongle is OUTSIDE of the van (a Faraday cage, of sorts) while the laptop is INSIDE the van. You should try it with just the dongle and both inside and outside the van. Also the dongle may just be more sensitive than the laptop antenna.

Very cool! Lots of great ideas. I'm just about to start my 85 Chevy g20 ...by myself...ugh .excited but nervous but wish me luck, I'm no stranger to "car" life and traveling solo but this build is intimidating fr. Tysm for the video!

BTW I got fantastic results by making just a flat plate reflector and using a USB to WiFi adapter that has an external "high gain" antenna. I tried the thing with and without the reflector and got such impressive gain with the reflector that I stopped experimenting at that point. In my case the reflector is made from 8"x 10" rectangular cardboard wrapped in multiple layers of heavy aluminum foil (for better skin effect). The "high gain" antenna (the "probe") is 4 1/2 inches long, mounted at the base of the 8 x 10 card, and otherwise centered on the card, with a 5/8th inch spacing between the high gain antenna and the surface of the card. This thing is simplicity itself. I used small pieces of folded over cardboard as spacers between the antenna and the card, and scotch tape to hold the usb dongle/antenna combo in place. This antenna is surprisingly directional (discounting reflected WiFi signals) and seems to have much higher gain over just the "high gain" antenna sitting in free space at the same location.

There's an effect called "skin depth" which comes into play with aluminized cardboard cans. The aluminization is not thick enough to reflect (or block) WiFi signals. Need to use a tin can or similar. Wrapping a cardboard can (or tube) with a single layer of aluminum foil won't do it either, same reason. Good explanation in the notebook sketch of the diminutions required for the can and probe placement. Unfortunately, as we go higher in frequency the size and placement becomes more and more critical.

Agree with below. I've been experimenting with different home-made WiFi long-range antennas. Unless you can R.F. decouple the USB cable from the WiFi dongle, you can't tell how much the "can" is contributing. Probably just the dongle taped to the tripod on the roof would be the same result.

vanlife4ever! awesome video no toilet or shower bro?

  • @bigdeadlykicksandkickflips

this doesn't make any sense to me. my can its 231 mm. but then you said the can size is 3/4ths the wave length? what do you mean 3/4ths of what? 124mm? or my 231mm if so, do you mean cut th can? i looked up aprox 9in by 3 in can it says my wave length is 5/8ths. I don't don't understand what the math is refering to especially the 3/4th's part

  • @bigdeadlykicksandkickflips

oh all our math is based of the can legnth? our can is our wave length?

I think that there will be no effect from a cardboard jar. Perhaps Mr. Robot wrapped his jar in aluminum foil behind the scenes?

LOL! Please tell me that this guy is joking, right. He knows nothing about antennas and WiFi signals! That antenna, if it worked at all, would reduce the number of hot-spots he could pick up, not increase then number! It would increase the signal strength of the hot-spot that he wanted to use. That is the purpose of a directional antenna!

I'm pretty sure the can has nothing to do with it, it's the length of wire and the wifi adapter itself

You should try to get an old satellite receiver dish and place your USB wifi adapter in the focal point of that dish. Then try again. I bet the reception will improve considerably. (downside: ithe antenna will be directional. So you will have to aim it)

Thank you for the educational video, just a question, what happens if I add another pringle can attached to another, will it boost more signal. And another one, instead of cylinder can, what about the cone one? Thank you.

Gawd those wheels are literal AIDS. Since it's black I'd of named it ,"Vandingo" but given that those rims gave me the HIV, I don't think it'd be politically correct. Ya know, because Africa is the Aids capital of the world. Fk, has anyone ever told you how fkn revolting those wheels are? I will literally start a GoFundMe to raise money for a new set of rims. I don't know what to think knowing this guy did all this phenomenal work, and chose to leave those fkn rims on the truck. Jfc those hideous rims are seared into my brain. I can't even focus on the rest of the video. Put a timestamp for after you show those rims. Guranteed every dislike is due to those wheels. They're fkn ugly....
