I love vintage technology and equipment. Rescuing and restoring something old and putting it back to use is so much more satisfying than buying the latest disposable "widget".

Why modern dehumidifiers fail
Переглядів 8 тис.3 роки тому
A short cycling compressor and cheap, corroding copper likely caused my previous dehumidifier to fail by losing all it's charge after only 3 summers of use. I "recycled" the unit into a learning opportunity and took some steps to assure the replacement unit will hopefully live longer. The previous unit's fate: ua-cam.com/video/oCwShoqWTnQ/v-deo.html

I took a failed 3 year old dehumidifier that had a refrigerant leak that couldn't be found and turned it into an alternate compressor and refrigerant experiment.

1987 Amana part 2 - Installed!

With the opportunity of an 80 degree day in October, I decided to toss the Amana in my window and get a video done before the leaves fall and the snow flies. These Amanas get no love, but Amana kept quality in their product line long after everyone else in the USA sold out and made cheap junque.

I picked this unit up for $35. I really like these Amana units as they seem to be very well built and they are easy to service and clean. They are also fairly common compared to EQK or Fedders around here which I almost never see. It will have to wait until next summer for an installed video unless we get a freak heatwave in October.

I went to install my '94 Amana in one of the upstairs rooms today and ended up doing a lot more work than I expected. Fortunately, I had a trusty backup to keep me cool while I worked! I find it much easier (and more satisfying) to use vintage window units upstairs in my Cape Cod style house rather than trying to balance the central A/C which, at 3 tons, is at least 1/2 or even 1 ton over-sized...

I built this around 2006 and the video is from the same time frame. It is hopper cooled just like an antique hit-and-miss engine. One day I'll convert it to a closed thermosyphon system, but it works just fine and really doesn't use much water at partial loads such as lights, fridge and furnace in the winter or fridge and fans in the summer during power outages. This is a longer video of this 6000 BTU unit I picked up last summer installed and operating. This model retailed for $199 in 1972, which is equivalent to about $1200 today. It was twice as expensive as a basic 6000 BTU Coldspot AC, and $50 to $70 more than the TOTL model. from all the videos i have seen people found that everything on modern made in china junk is cheapened so the coils fail from being too thin the circuit boards have bad solder joints or parts burn out seems like they are just made to last till warranty runs out. so did this Frankenstein model hold up is it still running?
i have graveyard of dead humidifiers all of them last a few years and die last one i bought lasted only a few months till it turned into a basketball of ice.
I have this exact model too and now it's giving a quite loud humming noise even when it's OFF. When it's ON it no longer remove water and much louder too. I have no idea if there's something to do... ?? That's so sad that nowadays appliances like this aren't lasting anymore
I had that issue with the sensor as well and moved it to the outside the second day I had it. Fixed the short cycling.
I have had EVERY Dehumidifier purchased from Costco in the last 10 years fail. None have lasted more than 2 seasons. Recently, 2 Midea 50 pint cube dehumidifiers purchased in 2022 have failed within 2 weeks of each other. One was completely icing up and the other simply stopped dehumidifying no matter what setting was selected. The only saving grace was that Costco accepted both returns and refunded the purchase price.
@@reedgrele6673 They are ALL junk these days. The copper tubing in the coils is literally paper thin and of poor quality. It takes very little for filiform corrosion to set in and turn the coil into Swiss cheese. Google “filiform corrosion copper” and you’ll learn a lot. That’s why the old school dehumidifiers with the smooth aluminum tubing coils lasted forever. The aluminum isn’t subject to that type of corrosion.
@@chrisbeck8182 Thanks for that. My parents were married in January of 1955. When they moved out of the family home in 2007, ALL of the appliances that they received as wedding presents (refrigerator, range, vacuum cleaner, mixer, toaster... etc) were STILL WORKING!!!
So in essence you made a dehumidifier that was as good as a 70's one, maybe better.
I got an Amana 6600 btu air conditioner that looks similar to this one today and fixed it up too. It works great!
@@Singingfishandfandude789 They really are excellent units and kept the quality much later than many other brands. Very quiet and very efficient and solidly made. This one has a Matsushita compressor and a sound blanket so it’s REALLY quiet, hence the Quiet Zone name. My 5500 BTU Amana has a Toshiba compressor and no sound blanket. The Toshiba is a little more “buzzy” sounding and overall the unit is louder but has a pleasant hum to it.
@@chrisbeck8182 they really are great units. Mine doesn’t have the sound blanket but is still the most quiet unit I have. Mine can freeze my whole room out in less than 10 minutes!
That's my unit. It's borked. Had ice a few weeks ago. Figured it was toast but let it thaw. Plugged it in, seemed to work. Have an "EC" code now.
I’m not sure what the EC code means as these units do not have any sort of high or low pressure switches. They only have a temperature sensor that allegedly keeps them from freezing up if used in too cool of an area. However that sensor won’t help if it’s freezing up due to being low on charge.
That actually looks so nice, better than a lot of modern units
How did you remove the unit from the sleeve case?
The front grille is held on by one screw (hex head) at the bottom right corner. After the grill is removed there is a green ground wire to disconnect between the chassis and the case. After that the chassis just slides out. If it seems to be getting stuck make sure the louvers on the top of the case aren’t pushed down and hitting a screw that’s on top of the chassis holding something or another on.
10:25 dehumidifier: DEUÆEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Nice video sir!
It would shorten its life. The sensor is placed inside the unit for a reason. Prolonging the fan may cause it to overheat.
that's what I was thinking as well, not all motors are made to run continuoesly forever
Don’t most dehumidifiers have a continuous mode anyway where both the fan and compressor run continuously? They also have timers letting them run for hours at a time. Do these modes contribute to short lifespan?
You seem very knowledgeable with these things, What will happen if I put a normal dehumidifier in a hot 60 degrees Celsius room with about 80% humidity, do you know what will fail and why will it fail, I cannot find an answer anywhere on the net. Will the evaporator get too hot? Maybe the pipes will have over pressure? What do you think might be done to a dehumidifier in order to work at 60 deg effectively?
use nyle dehumidifier wood kiln dryer.
Here’s a little story. I have a White Westinghouse dehumidifier from the early 1980s which was in the house when I purchased it that still runs flawlessly but was adding about $30 to my electric bill each month in summer. So back in 2020 I had the great idea of replacing it with an energy star Friedrich dehumidifier that was presented to me as “top of the line” for over $300. Loved it because it was quiet, looked sleek and had a continuous drain feature instead of a bucket and did in fact save some money each month on electricity. Well back in June 2022 I noticed the basement being humid in spite of the unit running and knew something was wrong. It did come with a 5 year warranty on the sealed refrigeration system so after bringing it back to the authorized service center (and paying a $50 “diagnostic” fee) I got a call the next day to be told it was non repairable and a new one would be sent from the manufacturer. Luckily I still kept the Westinghouse because it took 5 weeks to receive a replacement. Even more discouraging was when I went to pick it up at the service center and the repair guy said as I was leaving, “see you again in 2 years”. It’s absolutely disgusting that our country no longer makes a dehumidifier and all we have available is garbage from China.
I had one of these but in the mid 2000’s it finally died. Yours looks like it was minimally used so it should last for many years to come. Mine did have a red round “GE” symbol on the outside of the case though. I can’t be sure, but if I still have the operating manual I will let you know.
That compressor sounds like a rechi prosison rotary
Question... should the exhaust (vent control) be open or closed while on?
You can run it either way. The open setting just exhausts some of the cooled air to the outdoors.
@@chrisbeck8182 OK thanks! Thought I was doing it wrong all of these years! Closed it will stay.... I need all of the cool air I can get! Both of my fans don't work and when its humid... I cannot function!
I have the same unit and my mom has one too! I've had it about 28 yrs. still going strong! They don't make them like this anymore!
Recip compressor?
Actually no, unfortunately. It’s a Hitachi rotary. It’s a little noisier than the more common Matsushita compressors but it cools great and is very efficient. EER is about 8.5 but it usually does quite a bit better than that.
@@chrisbeck8182 It does have that "sharp" sound like a recip though.
Kool man i love stuff like rhis .. i got a whirlpool humidifier i wnt to play with

That AC probably got dropped at some point leaving the compressor unbalanced.
Probably it can handle more airflow.
Did you ever run it long enough to see your fuel consumption….price of gas draws me back to using red diesel.
Thank you for the informative video! I was having the same problem with my Frigidaire dehumidifier
Great find and great installation job! Also one of the best AC videos I've seen.
Wow. Even with the adjustments you made, that is no 'Siesta.'
Fantastic find. I remember these from my Childhood. These were built to run forever. Glad you have such a nice specimen.
Well so the moral of the story is you get what you pay for but I’ve tried many different brands and they’re all the same they’re all junk. I would love to buy a good dehumidifier I would pay money for it.
Thank you Chris! Can you tell me how to determine the btu rating of a compressor?
The easiest way is to look up the model number of the compressor. The BTU rating depends on whether the compressor is being used for low, medium or high temperature refrigeration (or said another way, deep freezer, refrigerator, or air conditioning). A deep freezer compressor, for example, will have a large displacement (CC's or cubic inches) but a relatively low h.p. motor. This is due to the low density of the suction gas due to the low temperature of the evaporator. If this compressor was used for a dehumidifier or air conditioner it would likely overload the motor as it would have higher density suction gas to try and pump. So, for a given displacement (and ignoring the motor h.p.) a compressor that has a 1 cu. in. displacement will have a much higher BTU rating for air conditioning than it would for a freezer due to the physical properties of the refrigerant and the operating temperatures of the system.
Thank you for the videos I enjoy watching them! Can you tell me how you determine the btu rating of a compressor?
Black around the switch not silver
Looks like mine but control is different than that
I'm about to get one of these Siesta units shipped to me. How heavy are they?

Fan will stop turning how do I fix the it
Hi, Dee. The unit likely needs to be taken apart and the fan motor lubricated with some 3-in-1 Electric Motor Oil or Zoom oil. It also probably needs a good cleaning while it is apart. There are several videos on YT regarding the cleaning process.
I love this compressor startup. I have a friend who had one of this in 80`s. Actually their parents still with this unit in their house . My LG 5000 BTU power is 440W against 730w of this carrier.
The fan motor alone uses over 100 watts compared to almost half that on my 5000 Panasonic.
That compressor speaks for itself! Especially when it starts up!!!
Ahhhhhh yes, the grand Tecumseh AE compressor. One of my absolute favorites!
I have this exact unit and for some reason when I put it on siesta mode it freezes up. Any helpful suggestions?
There are several possible causes. 1) The air filter material could be too thick or restrictive blocking air flow. You should be able to see thru it (relatively coarse black foam, 1/8" thick). 2) The fan motor could need lubrication and it doesn't spin fast enough on the lowest speed to keep the coil from freezing up. 3) The room temperature is too cold. Cooling below 68-70F indoor on a cool evening outside can cause freeze-ups. 4) The condenser(outside) and evaporator (inside) coils could be dirty. Lastly, 5) the unit could be low on charge, which is possible, but pretty rare. I have 10 vintage a/c's dating back to 1965 and all of them still have 100% full charge. If the unit has never been taken apart and cleaned I am sure it sorely needs it. This would be time to oil the fan motor as well. Not all require lubrication, but my Siesta has oil ports. There are several videos on here that show the basic process of removing the case and cleaning the coils. After 20, 30, 40+ years, every unit I have cleaned was absolutely filthy!
@@chrisbeck8182 Thank you so much! We will attempt your suggestions.
Brilliant! Thanks so much for the video. I had the same issue on mine which cycled 50+ times a day, which eventually over several years welded the relay contacts closed thus the compressor does not turn off and overheats until it thermally trips. This is the cause of the fire hazard and why they recalled these units. Stupidly they did not design the circuit board to always run the fan when the compressor is running.
Are there 2 fans in that unit?
Yes, if you mean a fan rather than a blower. Both condenser and evaporator use fans, just like a Carry-Cool.
@@chrisbeck8182 Kind of looks like the same concept as a York Tombstone Central AC unit!!!
@@chrisbeck8182 Where does the air exhaust on the outside? Which vents?
@@chrisbeck8182 How many blades does the fan on the inside have?
can you run it 24 7 if you connect it to large diesel tank?
You could run it 24/7, particularly if you remove the cooling hopper and convert it to a closed cooling system. There was some info on the web about that a number of years ago. I’ve kept mine as-is since I only use it as backup and it makes it more portable.

Hi Raymond. It’s been so long I can hardly remember, but I’m pretty sure I ordered it from McMaster-Carr. I believe it’s 1-1/4” NPT but might be 1-1/2”. @@chrisbeck8182 thanks buddy I dissected your video and went to their site. I have some issues to work out on this gen set…it was home built…so some minor mods to make it more reliable in a off grid setting…I may swap in a 4 pole just to see if it’s worth it….the original 2 pole was rated in the 3.5 to 4 Kw range The 4 pole is maybe 8kw and about twice the size.
@@offgridmangogrower use the 4 pole if you can. The 2 pole I have lacks peak surge current capability. It won’t start a split phase well pump or sump pump even though the running amps are well within it’s capacity. That big flywheel stores a lot of energy and will allow a larger alternator to give a peak power quite above what the engine can provide steady-state. I’d have used a 5kW 4-pole if I didn’t run across the 3.2kW 2-pole at a screaming deal I couldn’t pass up.
@@chrisbeck8182 that’s great advice I was just wanted the engine to be closer to peak torque curve….and not see parts a flying… But the center mass is I’m sure 120% over them puny 2 poles I also have a 120/240 Chinese head bought along with a massive lister clone single diesel……I’m getting pumped to match em up.
@@offgridmangogrower I’m running the engine just a wee bit over 1800 rpm to get 3600 at the alternator. 8” drive pulley and 4.2” driven. That was the closet to 4” available. It seems pretty happy and with 3kW load the engine runs clean and has quite a bit left.
