Fly Tying Friday - 10Jan25 -Bullet Heads and Hair Dry Fly Hackle
We had a last minute change as our scheduled presenter had an equipment problem so Al stepped in at the last minute to tie a Bullet Head Hopper and a Hair Bare (a hair-hackle dry fly he fished a lot during the 80s & early 90s when genetic hackle we more difficult to find than it is today). The WEEKLY TIP focused on making the perfect bullet heads and was the basis of the featured fly pattern.
A drop of glue helps keep the Hair Bare's hackle in position and Al likes Healthy Hoof that Dutch Baughman repurposed from covering the hooves of horses to the fly tying bench. You can get your small bottle of it on Amazon at Healthy Hoof glue link = amzn.to/4ga5ket.

Hello Al & Gretchen! I hope you had a wonderful Chrisrmas and New Year holidays. Anyway thank you for this great video. You showed me the solution to a problem that I never even knew I had! Question: where do you get those HUGE fur patches!?! Thanks!
You two are awesome!!!! Thanks sooo much!!!
Glad you found our "spur of the moment" presentation helpful.
Have you tested the synthetic fly tied with the cosmetic brush fibers for float ability? Would like to know if it has a similar buoyancy for the renegade below it .
Yes, it's similar to hair but it doesn't become waterlogged like hair will after it's been in the water for a while.
Al, your No Name Varient with the orange Body is very similar to an Australian Fly called the Onion Bag, a Red Spinner imitation. The famous Tasmanian Fly Tyer Dick Wigram often tied and used various Variant hackled flies.
Thank you for the information. Do you have a way I could contact Dick Wigram? My email is albeatty2@gmail.com.
@@albeatty1404Dick Wigram died in 1971 in a car crash mate, Dick developed many Fly patterns and wrote several books.
Would the hackle cape make fibers for the wonder wing instead of salt capes? Just a thought
As the hackle is flexable
Yes, hackle cape feather will make Wonder Wings if the barbs are long enough to for the wing and that's usually on the large end of the cape. Whiting dry fly capes tend to focus more on smaller hook sizes and less on larger; that's why we often use Whiting Saltwater Capes
You may show later in the video, but are these patterns in a book? If so which book?
The flies or ones that are very similar are in our book, The Humpy Encyclopedia. We have a free download version on our website (btsflyfishing.com) or a regular book is available for about $20.00 (our site or amazon.com.
I will make up a bunch of these and when the spring gets here go test them and try to show the results. I am hopefully going to hide the hook so that they can't see the manufacturers name on it.
Great ties flies and commentary as usual. Happy holidays and thank you
Wonderfull. HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Louis from Italy.
Beautiful work, gonna have to tie up some for sure.
By comparing replicas with genuine items, you can learn how to identify the authenticity of a bag. I think kislux also has artistic value. This change allowed me to devote more resources to a true art collection while maintaining my own style.
Where did you get that beautiful Ostrich herl, all the stuff I have found is small and very short.?
It's a hit-or-miss deal. I just looked on Amazon and found some, but you have to verify with the seller what you are getting. You can also go to a craft store. I've often found it there. And don't forget your local fly shop.
Very good as usual thanks
Great video thank you
Totally agree with Barry regarding the new jaws for the DynaKing Barracuda. I used to insert a thin piece of cardboard around the bend of my hook to add a little bulk to allow the old jaws to properly secure the hook for tying. Well worth the $125 bucks fir these new jaws from DynaKing.
Great video and flies . In Tasmania, we can hunt BrushTail Possum under permit as they are a serious agricultural pest. . Possum fur is a great tying material, we use the tail fur for the famous and very deadly Possum Emerger.
Thanks for the information about Possum fur. If you get a chance, send me a picture of a Possum Emerger you (or a friend) tied. My email is albeatty2@gmail.com
I love these tutorials!!! Thanks Al and Gretchen
I love that tip with the knotted legs Al. Another great tip. Thanks.
Yes, I discovered it on UA-cam so I can't take credit for anything except bringing it to everyone's attention.
I found a compromise for smaller caddis. I create the bubble by tying in a sparse horseshoe of Antron and letting it fluff out to resemble a case.
Enjoyed that,sorry I missed participating.
Gotta add some of these to my box, looks like a killer,
Many, many thanks!
If you watch Barry Orde Clark's Delta Wing Caddis Sedge video you can figure it out and make the back shorter
Thank you for the lead. I've checked the "Sedge" out and it looks promising.
Thanks Jim, Al, Betty, Lou and everyone! Great stuff! Sending warm Thanksgiving greetings to all from Louisiana (currently via Texas) from a land-locked Montana & B.C. Calif kid : )
A really interesting and educational video! I saved it to watch again. Thanks. 👍👍👍
Hi guys ,great video like every other one y'all produce, you Too are cute and should be enevied buy all fly tying couples
Hey Al let Gretchen know that i know of a business that makes those foam things to fold hackel. I forget the name but if she want one or two....or three lol...I can get you guys that information. Take you too!
Hi Al & Gretchen! How are you? Those books look really beautiful and I bet there's a lot of interesting information. How would I get a copy of each of those books? Take care you two!
They are all out of print. Do a Google search. If you find one, expect to pay at least $1,000.00 +
Listening to your conversation about presenting your stimulator at 41:21, and your technique to allow another foot or two of slack to let it “jump” downstream as you describe it. Thanks! That’s a great new skill I’ll try the next time out! Really enjoy the channel and all the information. Very articulate and well presented! Cheers! Paul from Vancouver, BC
Thank you for your kind words.
What a great video, guys. Thank you so much for sharing.
This is really interesting. I have several treadle machines, but I was thinking of exactly this kind of vise, except working off a spinning wheel. More compact, though I suppose having the table is an advantage if one has the space. I was actually also thinking of doing this with a motor and two pedals, but in some respects the control is better with a treadle, and quieter. Also the computer control was a little beyond me. I would use a centered vise so that could have a true centered running.
Please keep us in the loop regarding your treadle project. We'd be very interested in it progress. Please contact us at albeatty2@gmail.com
I have the hard cover book, and it doesn't have the chapter you are referring to.
Gary had 3 hardcover books; I'm not sure which you are referencing.
I never caught a trout on a McGinty either, but that’s because I’ve never fished one for trout. The McGinty is the most effective bluegill fly I’ve ever used. ;)
Fantastic tying lesson tonite. I love fishing with traditional wet flies. They’re hard to find but their old school flies that really work well. My trouble is when I cut the waste off the wings I cut the thread. Nice job guys.
Eric & I hope we had something that will help with that problem.
Fascinating video again 👍
Living in South williamsport Pa this is interesting
Mega Thx for an Amazing video and I truly enjoyed all the historical items
Fantastic presentation as always. Eric is a true master. As for the recipes, as Al says, unless you can find them in books, you will have to research. For any of these classic wet flies, the internet is your best bet. You can find articles or UA-cam videos on most flies. For some, you will need to watch the video to understand the recipe. For example, In this case, Eric provides the recipe for the Tipperlinn.
super erklärung, schöne fliege, super gebunden von meistern danke lg aus österreich
Thanks for having Mr. Austin on. How can I get the recipes for the flies in Favorite Flies and Their Histiries?
The only way to get them is from the book; I couldn't find them on the Internet but then I may not be doing a good job of searching.
@@albeatty1404 I’m not sure what book you are referring to. There are no recipes in Mary’s book.
@@thePotters_clay I'm not totally sure but I think Eric was referring to Forgotten Flies
My favorite dry fly. Great job…
Hi Al and Gretchen. I'm so bummed that I missed this meeting. For some reason i just couldn't get on. Can you please send me another invite for next week please? Thanks! JOHN
Hi John, this was a one-time presentation for a private women's organization so the only "next time" is unknown & in the future.
My husbands father sure spoke highly of you. Great to see you on UA-cam.
thank you for the kind words
Really enjoyed the history and watching you tie on the treadle vise.
Treadliling ( is that a word?), manipulating thread& materials, and talking. Wow! I’m impressed and quite sure I couldn’t do it. Well done.
No, it's not a word but it sure got people's attention. Anyway, it was a lot of fun.
@@albeatty1404 Congratulations to you for the new word. Now we need to get people using it! :-)
Hi Al and Gretchen! This was so helpful to me tonight. I especially love the technique for hiding your waste. You two make such a great team! Thanks so much!
Thanks for the kind words. Tell a friend(S).
I think the best tip you have ever gave is these dog poop trash bags, got mine today. These are great
We thought so too when we saw them. Thanks for the feedback.
👍👍👍👍
Your hackle stacker appears to be homemade. I would like to suggest a post where you show us your home crafted tools and how you make them... thanks
it is. I have 24 of them. I pre-fill them with 12 tails and 12 wings when doing hair-wing orders
Just subscribed to your blog. Looking forward to learning from both of you. What a great idea to go on a fly fishing trip. "Honey, i will be going on a extended fly fishing trip. Be back when I complete the fly testing. Love you
