Transforming MPC’s 1/63 X-Wing into a Shelf-Ready Masterpiece!
What’s up, Plastic Addicts? Welcome to Jason’s Space Dock-your home for Sci-Fi Modeling Masterpieces!
Today, we’re taking on the MPC 1/63 X-Wing Starfighter, built as part of a User-Generated Content campaign for the Autoworld Store. You might recognize this model from their recent ads-though if you’re wondering about the voiceover, that’s not me! They swapped mine for an AI voice, which, let’s just say, has its pros and cons.

Build Review: 10:38
Final Thoughts: 12:21
This build stays true to the kit: no lighting, no modifications, just straight out of the box. While this approach is a bit different from my usual projects, it offered a great opportunity to highlight what the kit has to offer-and the quirks to watch out for!
Before diving into the assembly, we’ll explore the fascinating history of the X-Wing studio model. Designed by Ralph McQuarrie, Colin Cantwell, and Joe Johnston, and brought to life by ILM, the X-Wing became a symbol of rebellion both in the Star Wars universe and in pop culture. The original studio models were intricate masterpieces, built for dynamic filming and packed with lighting, motors, and detailed craftsmanship.
The Build Process
This kit comes with the usual reputation of older MPC models, but I was pleasantly surprised. Despite its age, there was minimal flash, and the parts fit better than expected. However, there were still some hiccups:
Misalignments: The fuselage had a noticeable step near the cockpit.
S-Foil Issues: The mechanism for opening and closing the wings doesn’t naturally align, requiring manual adjustment each time.
Instruction Errors: A small misstep with unclear instructions led me to install the wing assembly upside down-but hey, it was a fixable mistake, and that’s the key takeaway I want to share: don’t let the fear of mistakes hold you back.
Painting and Weathering
Painting was simple and forgiving, and the decals were easy to apply. While weathering isn’t required, I added it to capture the on-screen look of the X-Wing and to demonstrate how basic techniques can transform a build. It’s not perfect, but it gives the model character and depth.
Final Thoughts
For beginners, this kit is a great starting point. The build is straightforward, the instructions (mostly) get the job done, and it’s an approachable way to get into model building. That said, the price is steep, especially here in Canada at around $50 CAD. For a 40-year-old kit aimed at newcomers, it’s not the most budget-friendly option.

Take pictures of the sides?
really turned out nice...you'd never know it's such an old mold of this ship...
Just started building this now, thanks for the many useful tips!!!!!
hah tie everything together
Sorry but the Bandai 1/72nd model is more detailed and much crisper.
Bandai doesn't make anything like this. Their Tie Fighter is tiny in comparison. Also, this kit from Round2 is actually pretty darned nice. I'm in the process of building one, and I can tell you right now that anything from Bandai or Revell would have a tough time being 'better', they'd just be different.
I'm sorry to disagree, but I have a 1/72 Bandai Tie Fighter. Though it's EXCELLENT, given the small scale it isn't actually more detailed/crisper. However, i it is EXCEPTIONAL for the small scale. And, if Bandai ever made a larger scale one, I'm sure the 1/32 Studio Series one would pale in comparison.
That was added for the fiber optic version. It’s used to hold a bulb to feed the fibers into for lighting the windows. The bottom saucer has those same pegs near the phaser
Nice catch!
Nice video, but.... This is the worse X-Wing Model Kit ever made.
You're not wrong. That'ss why I opted to focus on steps to make it look as good as possible. And it looks great on a shelf lol!
😎👍Very cool and very nicely greatly well done on a job very wonderfully and fabulously beautifully well done indeed Sir!👌.
Thanks for checking out the vid. It turned out WAY better than I expected.
Nice work Jason. You really transformed that old model , on a nice thing . I had this model in 1980 , but , being a kid , didnt had the skill to do a good job , and the model was lost , Today I would look at this model as a nice challenge , with a lot of new skills , and online help; :P
I didn't expect it turn out as well as it did. But going into it with lowered expectation may have made it a better build?
Great video, Jason. The only thing that I don`t like about this kit is that Round2 should've put more effort into adding more details, especially the fact that the pilot of the X-Wing is molded in the cockpit. Not like the 1/72 scale Bandai version has more details compared to the MPC. To me, Round2 is treating the model like it's cutting corners. Other than that, great work on the model.
I think it was a calculated decision, like the 537 refit. They know the kits aren't great BUT there's a huge amount of nostalgia for them, even with the defects...also it was a way to get star wars models out without having any new tool developed yet. Now, if they don't update the 1/43 x-wing tool (or even develop a new one), then you kinda know they don't really care.
Love your genuine content. All the best for the new year! 🎉
Thank you so much (for watching AND commenting)
Love this. I took the same journey with the same kit last spring and after weathering and details it turned out fantastic.
If your expectations are reasonable this can make a very nice little shelf model.
That turned out great, Jason! You did a ton better than I did back when I built mine (to be fair, I knew nothing then, but still). Nice work!
If I never did a Vulcan Shuttle, that I weathered, I'd never have had the skill/confidence to tackle this.
Back in the late 70s I built the Estes model rocket version of this. 1 flight and never saw it again. I was so bummed about that. It took me 2 weeks to make it as screen accurate as possible. by the way it was the D engine variant. for somebody like myself that has Parkinsons would this be a good model or would you recommend something in a larger scale?
That's why I never got into rocketry. The risk of it flying away to parts unknown was too great for me! Without know the progression of your Parkinsons and mobility/fine motor skills it's hard to accurately answer. However, I'd say larger just because it's more forgiving and easier to make spot repairs if you end up with paint or weathering you're not happy with? Revell made a 1/29 scale one, I just ordered one from a guy on Ebay
@@JasonsSpaceDock LATE STAGE 2. I have trouble sometimes even using my computer mouse.
That turned out looking great, especially with the weathering. I'm holding out hope someone will release a 1/32 scale x-wing to go with the 1/32 tie fighters that have been released.
There is a 1/29 X Wing from Revell. I just found one on Ebay. I also picked up a 1/48 Fine Molds.
Very nice work Jason.
Thanks KCon! It's not ideal but it builds up well enough for a little shelf model.
That's a real beauty! Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching (and commenting)!
What a droning voice. If you need to sleep put this on.
Feel free to never watch my content again!
I know you have interesting things to say, problem is I always have a problem hearing you. I don't have this problem when listening to other YT vids....so pretty sure it's on your end. Sound is muffled and low. Maybe that mic you are using?
Thanks for letting me know about the audio, I'll have to look into it.
I've been wanting to build and light the Enterprise D for my brother-in-law and this was my major sticking point because paint and scratch sounds abysmal. I hope this pans out
If all goes wqell, early in the new year I'll have them available.
What was the process with the penitent lighting
I see a model that I am interested in and that is what I watch.
Boyd continues to be an inspiration. I will continue to watch his videos. Boyd sparked inspiration with such grace. I’m gutted.
Paint job is great! nicely done.
To be fair, the Round 2 aztecs are doing a lot of heavy lifting lol
All you need to do now is get out of your bedroom into the real world with no silly pretend space ships.
Why? Why bring that kind of negativity and garbage remarks? If you don’t like it, consider this your invitation to never consume my content again.
Wow what a douche...ever hear of space x? These clowns make me laugh they take the time to not only find you on UA-cam but watch ur videos so they can tell u how much u suck. Nice video AWESOME subject matter. Thanks for posting
You can just use the top cover then. Or a different box or a Rubbermaid container. Literally so many options for growth.
It's not so much a question of access to the box. Yes, I can put the pieces in another box, or rubbermaid. It's an issue of size. I have a fairly large space, so I can put the box top off to one side. Other builders only have a little space, so then picking up, spinning to the correct side, then stowing the box top somewhere becomes a whole different propsition.
You used images from the not-so-special edition. Nerd card REVOKED.
Now spray it with 1mm layer of car paint
👍
Great job! Shame that the kit itself is so inaccurate. One of the things on my 3D printing bucket list.
You're right, not even close to accurate. BUT, it's a kit I enjoy building...especially with some of the accessories available now.
Great construction of the Enterprise B, I have found two great websites that have good images of her, as USS Lakota, Star Trek Prop Authority, (one word), and Model magic, (also, one word). I have only the five piece model kit of the Enterprise, but I also have Eaglemoss' diecast Enterprise B, as well. Take care, and all the best.
The last time they re-issued this kit was in 2010 so, hopefully, they'll do another run...sometime.
My mother bought a Tie Interceptor from 1981 at a yard sale in 2012. I built it, the interceptor was missing the glass for the cockpit so I made my own. It is black and gray, highly detailed, with red wing's. My nephew still has it after 12 year's. I think he's almost done with college?
Dude. I am "Arthur Pendragon" from Starship Modeller! 😃Good to see someone using my decals. They were made from a fan, to fans ! One little comment: small windows like these are better drilled using a hand drill. It takes more time but electric drills are "too fast", melts the plastic, and makes irregular windows. 👍
Yours are the best option out there!
The Enterprise Bis one of if not my favourite Star Trek ships, I would love to own on of these done by you, it’s amazing and you did an awesome job with it. I’d really like to start modelling but due to medication my hands can shake quite a bit, I think I’ll stick to my art like the Enterprise D i did and use as my profile pic.
Well, I would say thats some decent art you produced! Thanks for watching and commenting, it was a challenge to pull off! I will be scaling back commissions in the new year, and there'll be some announcements about that in the coming weeks. However, if you're ever interested in one HMU and I'll generate a quote for you.
"Don't worry about making mistakes" Very true! That said, 99% of mistakes, only you will notice.
I think worrying about mistakes is the #1 things holding people back re: model making.
Great Job! I love the Enterprise-B. I remember seeing it on the big screen when I was 8. I wish we got some more stories from what is known as "The Lost Era" of Star Trek. The Enterprise B and C. Tha fully, Section 31 will cover part of it.
Totally agree, the B fights with the E for my favourite Star Trek ship. I have some of the books from the Lost Era and while they’re good I’d have loved to get to see her more on screen.
I didn't love all the mods they made, but I did like the addition to the secondary hull. Reminiscent of the PBY Catalina
@@JasonsSpaceDock that’s definitely my favourite addition as well, I think they made the right choice in choosing the Excelsior class for the B, definitely makes sense thematically but creating a refit for the introduction to the B was definitely the way to go. I wish we’d got to see more of this version in DS9 as so many Excelsior were seen. It was a pity that the additions would have caused damage to the Excelsior model though.
This came out beautiful!
Thank you so much for watching AND commenting!
Gorgeous build! btw, your linktree isn't working for your site stuff
Thanks for the headsup about linktree. I'll see whats going on there.
@@JasonsSpaceDock of course. your builds are so nice! i've always been a lego builder myself, but after starting in D&D the last two years and printing/painting mini's, i've been looking into scale models..... where do you get the black bases i see in your videos? just starting out, so trying to figure out a lot of things lol
